Subject: Who made the robot?

_dodger ( ) posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 3:14 AM · edited Thu, 25 July 2024 at 3:23 PM

Hey, all, I was wondering if anyone recognised this robot. I mean, I know it's V.I.N.CENT. from Tha Black Hole but I was wondering about the mesh. I downloaded it about a year ago from a free meshes site in either 3DS or OBJ format, but I no longer have the original files or anything. I wanted to get in contact with the original creator to ask about making a posable version and distributing it free. But I don't have any READMEs or anything and I don't know where he came form and I can't find a file reference on Google for the file. The file was called VINCENT_vin_3ds.obj or VINCENT_vin.3ds, one of the two -- I don't remember if I got it in OBJ format already converted or if I got it in 3DS and saved it out myself. If anyone recognises the mesh, please point me in the direction of the author. If I can't find anything, I'll go ahead and make my own mesh for V.I.N.CENT. I plan to start making droids for free stuff, because I'm usually tired of making lightsabres and I'm starting to get tired of making blaster, too.

It was made by FastTraxx from chemicalStudios. And it was posted at the propsguild's site before we got a bandwidth usage problem. www.chemicalstudios.com

What about B.O.B.?

JohnRender ( ) posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 7:58 AM

What about Maximillian? And STARR and the security robots? (They could be based on the P4 figures.)

_dodger ( ) posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 8:15 AM

The photo reference available is spotty at best for old B.O.B. I did intend a Maximillian. Actually, I have a list of robots I intend to make (I know some of these have been done, but I mean to do them, and my way, and as fully posables): R2D2, R5D4, C3PO, Robby the Robot, the Lost in Space robot, K9, Cybermen, asstd. Daleks, asst. things from the Sandcrawler, Gonk Driod, Mouse Droid, IG-88, Cylon Centurion, V.I.N.CENT., Maximillian, S.T.A.R.R, TBH Security Robot, Twiki, Dr. Theophilus plus optional canteen MAT pose, the Tin Man, Tik-Tok, Rosie (from the Jetsons), Bender, Gir, #5, the Mars Crawler, Battle Droids, those rolling scorpion lookin' ones from TPM, that's what I can think of off the top of my head. S.T.A.R.R. and the security robots based on the P4 figures? Hunh? Are you talking about morphing the P4 figures into them? Or making conforming clothing that looks like a robot? That's just weird, sorry. If I make them they will just be original figures. That's easier than morphs or conformers without good reason anyway. Gahh, I hate making morphs. shudders at the thought

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 9:08 AM

I'm really looking forward to seeing your models when they're finished. I love robots and I know there are lots out their but many are not worth the effort. Power to your modelling. Catlin

I can get you some reference books over the weekend. I was ahuge Black Hole fan when I was younger (admit it, it kicked asss at the time, LOL) I have a couple of reference and technical books stored at the parents. I thinK I may even have an action figure or two of the them i could get pics of, if you like?

mizombie ( ) posted Fri, 17 January 2003 at 10:33 AM

this Idea jsut popped in my mind, The Micronauts. the new (image comics version) and the old (Marvel version) Acroyear was a Badass, so was Biotron/ LOL it is just a asuggestion

The environmental control robot, B9, from "Lost in Spcae" should prove very popular, especially if jointed and possessing morphing arms and legs. Questor had considered converting James "Tobor" Murphy's 3DS file into a CR2 Poser figure, but I haven't heard anything from him. If nothing else, Murphy's wireframe imports quite well into Poser and can be saved as a prop file. But an accurate and posable figure would be that much sweeter. BTW, "Tobor" does have a statement on his download page saying one can post non-commercial images with his material. I wouldn't have displayed this example otherwise. Sincerely, Bill

Here's another quick example of Murphy's B9 in combination with ShadeMaster's free "RenderUpgrade" lighting system. The Robot does require some of its materials tweaked when imported, but once done, it makes a first rate prop file. Because of its dense polygon count, it doesn't suffer too badly from Poser's smooth edge shading algorithm. Sorry, I've been "B9-ly" obsessed for the last year. I know, bad pun; no cookie! dodger:

I made this "Robbie" a long time ago in trueSpace as an exercise. Took the blueprints from an old Cinefantastique. If this mesh would help you make a posable character for Poser, you would be welcome to it.

moatmai ( ) posted Sun, 19 January 2003 at 8:03 AM

Your TrueSpace Robbie looks excellent! Can't wait to see it as a Poser Figure.

bbrachman ( ) posted Sun, 19 January 2003 at 10:02 AM

moatmai: I am less than competent with Poser to turn Robbie into a movable Poser figure. I would have to rely on someone with more experience and expertise. All my modeling skills have suffered over the years but the energy and excitement of the Poser community has gotten me back into creating new artwork. Everyone on the boards contributes a little to my new found inspiration. Bruce

JohnRender ( ) posted Mon, 20 January 2003 at 10:13 AM

For the human-like robots (Black Hole, C3P0, etc), I meant that you should make them posable figures and maybe use the existing P4 meshes as a base. And how about making the new B-9 robot from the Lost in Space movie? Bad movie, cool new robot (same actor's voice, too, but better!).

Redfern ( ) posted Mon, 20 January 2003 at 10:52 AM

JohnRender, Yes, I'll admit the mechanism in the "LiS" theatrical was a sleek design, very much "mecha" inspired, but in my mind, it was no B9. But, yes, it would make a very impressive model, at is, its earlier "Big Blue" chasis, not the half-@$$ed interpretation of Kinoshita's classic. Sorry for being a yutz. You can upgrade the Enterprise; you can even upscale the Jupiter (which would rationalize its internal volume), but don't try convincing us that a VR controlled Japanese mecha is our beloved B9. Please, don't take that seriously; I'm just having a lil' fun. As I said "Big Blue 9" IS a trippin' design. A real hoot was seeing both it and the Kinoshita 'bot "face off" on a talk show (I think the comedian Sinbad was the host)! Sincerely, Bill

Great robot, like it when it has a high polygon count. Makes a lot better import...

SteveJax ( ) posted Sat, 13 March 2004 at 3:45 AM

Is that Robby Mesh available to the community for download anywhere? IE: Bruce's TrueSpace mesh?

bbrachman ( ) posted Sat, 13 March 2004 at 2:48 PM

SteveJax; I would be willing to let anyone have the mesh who wants it. I would just need a place to put it, so to speak. A place for downloading. Not sure where that would be. I could email it to you if you want it. Someone could turn it into a Poser figure and then repost it. That would be fine. Bruce

There is already a Poserfied Robby out there made from the 3DS file on Jame's Murphy's Tobor site. My gripe with it is the hands don't open and close and the guy who poserised him killed the original BLACK MATTE finish on all the parts he made posable leaving the original Black on other parts making Robby look two toned! The Poser Robby is at the attached URL

Hey Dodger, did you ever make that list of robots? Wanna Add Cylons to the list?

elizabyte ( ) posted Tue, 14 September 2004 at 2:10 AM

Uhm, Steve, dodger's been banned for seven days for the better part of the year (i.e., the "seven day ban" has never been lifted). He may see this thread (especially if someone alerts him to it), but he won't be able to reply here at all. He's still around Poser Pros, though, if you want to give him a shout. bonni

Ummm... dratz. I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure out why the Cylon's Hip geometry from the OBJ file isn't showing up and a P4 bHipNoGen.obj geometry is for a Cylon I downloaded. I was hoping he'd make a new one since I can't figure out why the old one is doing this funky stuff:

Hey, Steve, I have a reply for you from The Dodger, himself (apparently, I'm his handmaiden today ;-)

Here ya go, I'm just cutting and pasting:

answer to stevejax:

the genital is off by default. He used a figure with a genital switch as a donor CR2, so it's taking the hip geometry for the genital off, which is a seperate object.

SteveJax ( ) posted Tue, 14 September 2004 at 3:24 AM

So I was just informed in another thread. I couldn't believe it! Does this mean I have to turn him on (Figuratively) every time I want to use him or can I resave the CR2 from the Poser Window with his genital turned on permanently? LOL!

elizabyte ( ) posted Tue, 14 September 2004 at 6:32 AM

My master bids me tell you: "He needs to open the CR2 in a text editor and remove the alternateGeom stuff and the geomChan channel from the hip, as well as the Genital actor from both actor parts and the addChilds in the figure block. The alternateGeom in combination with the geomChan channel is what creates the changing geometry that interacts with the genital switch. Removing that will default to treating genitals as if they were on all the time because there's no 'off' state, so the switch won't do anything anymore."

The problem with removing that alternateGeom stuff is I don't know exactly where it ends. Nor am I sure I'd know where the genital stuff is at. I don't suppose your oxymoron has a tutorial for me? LOL! As it is Just resaving the Newly turned on Cylon with his new reflection maps and his genitals turned on made them stay on in the new CR2. I'm afraid to mess with them now. LOL!
