Even Devinchi thought The Mona Lisa was horrible, he worked on it for 3 years and finally gave up, did something like 30 paintings. Even the best artists start with a blank page and grow as they create. I don't think your image is so bad. Learn from what you think are your weaknesses and build on strengths. My fav thing in art class was when one of the other students screamed out, "oh my GOD! I've been doing it wrong all this time, I can't believe it!" next week she work improved dramatically. Cool.
Great become good when you have seen better. Bad becomes worse when you have seen great. We all go through it. The only reason you feel differently now is because your work and the tools we use have all grown. Figures, textures, morphs, clothes are not what they where a two years ago. People who used to make orange and green textures now use perfect pink. People are finally stopping to rim everything vicki wears in Licorice and uphostery cording. Strings and straps look less like dental headgear from the 50's. And models are not floating 5 inches off the figures so much these days. Now it seems everyone knows have to Photoshop hair, everyone is making product which forces them to learn. Just the nature of the beast. Has anyone stated to see V2 as less than pretty yet? Someday we'll be looking at V3 and thinking "Yikes, what was I thinking". That is why I think Judy didn't catch on. "been there..done that". Just a sign our tastes are more refined. I think..I hope. I remember once posting an animation of Victoria 1 way back when and Im pretty sure it was YOU Who Commented: "Put that BVH in the marketplace and it would sell" well14 Months later im still getting a nice and much needed partime passive income from my two BVH motionpacks in the marketplace. thanks for the encouragement. :-)
yup...my work has grown so much its incredible...but what's really scary, its still incredibly bad :) But, no problem...its still better than it was.

One of the things that happens with any art is we become emotionally blinded - we project intensity into the work. We see what we feel and not what is there. A good many artists wait before they release something - give it time. Some even find ways to observe that objectify the art. For example - looking at a copy in a mirror. But this is why time makes a difference. - The original emotion pales and in its place - a 'cold eye'
One thing to bear in mind, though: this time-lens can work both ways. When I look at programs that I wrote many years ago, I usually cringe and say "how stupid". But sometimes I cringe and say "Now that was original! Why have I become so stiff that I can't think of such a clever technique any more?"

When I was doing paint on canvas pics, people used to ask me how I could bear to sell them after putting all that work and love into them..... ;) HAH! I sold 'em before the varnish was dry because I knew that in no time at all, they'd look like a kindergardener's finger-painting to me! To this day, I sometimes walk into someone's home and see one of my more ancient originals hanging on the wall and end up cringing all the way through dinner. That said, you have to remember that alot of the perceived awfulness is in the artist's eyes, alone...to the rest of the world, it may look like the Mona Lisa ;)
I like some of my ideas in old renders, but some of the faces I came up with and thought they looked good/like actual people...well, they just don't lol. In the example above, she does not look like Buffy, she looks like Chucky from Child's Play. I mean, we're not talking subtle twists of the eye here, we're talking total denial. I just can't believe I thought that was anywhere close to anything. -WTB
Ockham - I would agree. Very much so, yes. Time can confirm the brilliance of something just as easily as it can find weakness. Distance is 'The Great Objectifier.' Even with writing I found myself cringing. Yet, other times thinking 'actually, quite original.' If the former - I'm glad I waited. If the later - release it. Let it fly!
Patricia - I've experienced what you've described. It's interesting when others say they love something the original of which sits in the trash. In the end - one must be comfortable with him or herself. Of course, that might mean nothing ever goes out =8-0 Hopefully we can hold on to the mind AND the heart. If that destinction is at all real
I've had the same reactions when looking at my old poetry. It tends to fall into three categories: 1. What was I THINKING??? I don't drink, so I couldn't have been drunk... let's slip that back in the folder and pretend this never happened. 2. Hm. That one has possibilities. With some rewriting and polishing, it might look a lot better. 3. Hey, I'd forgotten about this one, it's pretty cool! Why don't I start tinkering with meter on this one again... man, I haven't written anything like this for a long time. Admittedly, most of 'em fall in category number 1. That's life for ya. As we progress, our earlier efforts look, well, early. But I don't think we should be ashamed of our early efforts! Yes, we shouldn't delude ourselves into thinking them Great Art, but neither should we slam ourseves by comparison with more practiced artists - including ourselves, years later. :) By exhibiting and getting feedback we improve tremendously, after all. My dad always said, when plunging me into advanced chess tournaments, "You don't learn anything from the games you win. You learn a lot from losing to someone better." Hard on the ego, but still a good philosophy. April Follies
Hah! I recently looked at my first Poser renders from almost a year ago. Pathetic! But I was so happy and even proud at the time. When the year anniversary comes up, I'm going to post the godawful first render alongside something more recent to the Poser newsgroup for laughs. A year from now I'll look at my current work and think "run away! Run away!" It's just like that, which is good. We improve with effort and time. I still think Victoria 2 is incredibly beautiful and versatile. I'm going to keep saying that until I have a computer that I'm confident can handle Victoria 3. :-) I do confess, however, that Vic3's joints don't seem to crinkle, which makes me a little jealous. But even Posette and "Dork" can still be used effectively. I recently did a render using AprilYSH's version of P4man which accepts Michael textures. A couple of people complimented me on how well I'd morphed "Michael." Heh heh.
heyas; no, i didn't feel COMPELLED or anything. i happend to have installed it, and thoght i'd give it a try when i was doodling around.... anyway, i remembered back when you posted it, and then asked for comments on it. because everybody nabbed it, but nobody used it or said anything. well, i said i'd let ya know, whenever i got around to it. but since then i lost track of ya.... but now here you are :) it's pretty cool, actually. i like how i can move the head around and the curls stay nicely draped over the body.

In ages past, under this ID and under "Darth_Logice" I posted images to the gallery that I thought were pretty good. Well, I have recently taken a trip down memory lane, and was horrified to find out that a great many of my pics are totally awful. How could I have thought they were good??? I offer no excuse and humbly submit myself to each and every one of you who had to view that crap and say something nice. I promise, in the future, to hang on to work for a few days to see if it still looks good to me...if I've truly achieved my objectives. I will leave up the offending artwork for a few days so newer people can see for themselves what Poser mania can do to well-meaning people, and will then clean it all up and keep only the ones I think are truly decent. Once again, so terribly sorry! -WTB
