Subject: Massive file extension renamer?

lhiannan ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2003 at 5:32 PM · edited Fri, 08 November 2024 at 8:50 PM

Is there a (free!) program that can rename many file extension at once? For example, I want to rename all of the "MAT"'s in my Pose folder (pz2) to camera folder extensions (cm2). I can do this by hand, but there is over a hundred folders with an obscene amount of files inside them. Thank you! Lhiannan

You can use Renamer. Get it here.

I use it for exactly that. Renaming MAT extensions. It's free, small file size and totally safe. It gives you a confirm or a preview, can be used to rename files, folders and sub-folders, change filenames to lowercase text, etc, etc.

Renamer is a great program! I use it all the time. I also rename the individual MAT files. A lot of people like to use "eyes-blue" instead of "product-eyes-blue" or just "product-blue", so I rename the files and move them as needed. (I have a MAT folder for eye colors, another for lips, etc.)

Thanks! I also found one here. Just a simple extension renamer with drag-and-drop input. I'll check out Renamer as well. :)

you can do it in DOS without a special program: 1. Open a DOS window and navigate to the directory containing the files. 2. Type "ren *.pz2 *.cm2" without the quotes. 3. Hit the enter key. Done.

I don't think WinMe has a DOS shell, or at least not one I can find. I miss some of the old DOS functions...

"Rename" is the one I use. It change the extensions and the file names too. I find it very useful

You can also do it with ACDSee if you happen to have it :)

My alltime multiple file renaming utility favorite is MultiRen. A freebie from Ziff-Davis Publishing. I like it because I can select specific files, the RtClck on them to rename in any fashion I choose. I've used it in all version of Win from Win95 thru Me, but in XP since SR1, it causes sporadic SHELL32.DLL faults in Explorer when RtClckg (about one time in 45 or 50). Now I only install it for special projects and use Bulk Renamer instead for everyday stuff. If all you want to do is rename extentions, just make a plain text file with the rename command in it (as in Ren *.PZ2 *.HD2) and save it with a name like RenPZ2HD.BAT - copy the file into the folder you want to use it in, and DblClck it. A DOS window will flick into view for a second, and the command will execute. Simplest method I've come up with.

I use RenameFiles v2.41us, and it works real fine for this task and any other renaming task I have. It's simple and easy to use for a non programmer and DOS allergic such as me.

I like Renamer because I can preview what I'm renaming. I can also strip out parts of file names, insert new strings, etc. It does a lot more than ren does in DOS. More functionality, same price (free.)

Attached Link: Bulk Rename Utility

I have used Bulk Rename Utility on many occasions in the past and found it to be powerful yet easy-to-understand utility. I have not used it for a while, so I am unsure whether it can recurse sub-folders.

I use Flexible Renamer. You have the option of using regular expressions - pretty funky if you've got lots of files named in one convention and then you want to change them to something else! Takes a little while to work out all the possibilities but if it can be expressed as a rule, the program can do it!
