Amazon has Poser 5 full version at $199 and a $50 rebate makes it $150.

Why would Curious Labs let them undercut their own ecommerce price of $319? $199 is as low as the academic version. Highly unusual.

Lack of sales. Need for cash. They just recently fired most everyone before the amazon thing. They likely need some financial stability before they can regroup the company in a stable manner. If you want P5 it is a great price to but it at.

It is a "loss leader". This tactic has been part of doing business for at least a century. A distributer will deliberately sell something for less than they paid for it in order to bring in more business on other items at full profit. Amazon has done this before to Poser products and to the products of other companies. It says absolutely nothing about the quality of what they are selling, except that they hope you spend even more while you are filling your shopping cart. Guess what it costs here in Sweden? (Full version) From my local SW house, normally reasonably priced: The equivalent of $700....... I kid you not. Which is one of the reasons I'm still with P4 and will be until I can buy a stable P5 at a decent price. The distributor for Scandinavia has NO idea about how to price things. :] Fish

There was a message thread about this topic a few weeks ago when Amazon.com first put it on sale. A CL part-time programmer responded that CL wouldn't be price-matching Amazon.com's sale. In a later thread, a rep from CL said that this price was a mistake and that they would be contacting Amazon.com to see why the price was so low. But, that was a few weeks ago... and Amazon.com is still selling P5 at that low price. And at this price, Poser 5 is either a "loss leader" or just a "loss"... have a "fire sale" to get rid of excess inventory. And at Amazon.com, people can post feedback about the product, so you can get a better idea of the program before you buy it.

Well I don't know what their wholesale price is but its probably cheaper than $150 so Amazon isn't losing. In the game industry the standard wholesale price is $20 per PC title and the supplier may has a suggested retail price of $60 for example. Also, the retailer may make deals with the supplier to buy back losses. For example, Amazon buys 300k units but makes a deal with CL that CL must eat the loss on any sales below the wholesale price. Seeing how there is a large discrepancy between CL's price and Amazons I'd be willing to bet Amazon has a much lower wholesale price.

Another common scenario is where retailer makes original deal to sell X units, and thus gets a discounted wholesale price. If it doesn't sell in the volumes anticipated then the retailer owes the wholesaler additional monies. So then they have 2 choices, pay back the wholesaler the volume discount they didn't meet, or raise sales volume somehow. No idea if this is that case. But this was probably not an excess stock assignment per se, as Amazon had to wait for new stock to come in - they were out of stock at the time the lower price was announced, with a 2-3 week wait for supply. All kinda moot if the product value isn't there. IMHO it isn't even at $99 unless you don't have any copy of Poser at all to updgrade from (to P4). Certainly wasn't at last year's price!
