Subject: Anybody got a REALISTIC animation TURNAROUND?

jjsemp ( ) posted Sun, 13 April 2003 at 1:59 PM · edited Sat, 08 February 2025 at 3:00 PM

Here's a BVH file I could really use. Has anybody come up with a simple turnaround from a standing position? In other word, I'd like to have: 1. A figure stands facing one direction. 2. The figure does a REALISTIC 180 degree turnaround. 3. Now the figure is standing facing in the opposite direction. It's more complicated than it looks. To do it realistically, the figure has to take a few turn-steps, swiveling while shifting from foot to foot, keeping balance. Try it yourself and see how many subtle movements it takes to accomplish. Does anybody know where such a thing can be found? And while I'm wishing, how about a half turn (90 degree) instead of a full turn? Anybody? -jjsemp

Wow! You ain't kidding. It's hard to do when you're thinking about it, and it's a very complex motion. To make it worse, I found that my own turnarounds are asymmetrical; I always lead with the right foot, which means that a CCW turnaround begins with a weird crossover move.

It's ironic that it's the SIMPLE things that are sometimes so hard to find in the Poser community. I'd gladly trade in every karate-leaping-kick and battle-sword-action BVH file in the marketplace for a nice, clean realistic turnaround. Some time ago I bought (for $20.00) a Custom BVH Motion Files Package from the marketplace. One of the files claimed to be, quote: "gunblast.bvh: michael quickly turning and drawing and firing gun." I bought the package just to get the turnaround. But, to my disappointment, the "turnaround" ended up being Michael standing on one foot and swiveling around on it to face the other direction as if by magic. A total waste. -jjsemp

Excellent point. Are there any dramatics teachers around here? Physical therapists? Somebody who knows how to instruct "activities of daily living" in a step-by-step way? I'll bet such an expert could make some money.....

Hmmm, I was going to suggest these people, but they seem to have grown up awful quick... :) Still you never know. later jb

Turning around isn't that simple. Strange thought but true enough. I remember from my military service (way back last century) that on the parade ground we would never do an about face from a standing position. Left face and right face were done from a stationary position but never the about face. It was always done on the march, even if that just meant marching in place. And it took three paces or moves for the turn. Any former drill instructors out there? One of them might be able to explain rhe steps.

Hmm ..Im sorry you feel my BVH package is a "Total waste"
my BVH motions for poser have been a pleasant $$success$$
for me over the past 14 months
Many of my buyers have expressed their thanks particularly for the particularly rare horse and raptor walks and when there was question ,they contaced me privately instead of publicly trashing my product in the poser forum.
Oh Well..
at any rate i have a BVH in my archive very similar to what you describe in this thread....
but i dont want the "waste" any more of your time

Good luck :-)

Sorry, Wolf359, I didn't mean to hurt your feelers. In my post above, I didn't identify you by name (you did) or trash your whole BVH package. I just offered up an opinion in this context on the one motion file, which was a disappointment. People don't swivel on one foot to turn around. Or, at least, the people I know don't. Maybe you know some different people, in which case, I stand corrected. The BVH turnaround that you demonstrate above isn't all that perfect, either -- but thanks for alerting me to the fact that there's something close out there. I'm sure I'll find it by searching the web, the same way you probably did. When I do, I'll let everybody else know where they can find it. Glad you've had a financial $$success$$. Since I contributed to it, I figure, at the very least, I'm entitled to my opinion. I've paid for the privilege. -jjsemp

Hey jjsemp.... did you ever think that it might be easier to just keyframe your own turnaround animation.... You know it's called animation for a reason. Not everything is available in a ready made format. Some of us that have been using Poser for our animations have actually had to learn how to animate our own characters without the help of some third party aids. JMHO Ed<---- one of the original 12

I was going to point out a few .bvh files on the 'Net, but all the turning animations I could find involve walking to one degree or another. And most of them import very roughly into Poser, needing a lot of correction.

JJsemp: thanks for your purchase NO hurt feeling here :-) No that animated gif is not perfect but with the graph editor you can make the figure simply turn stop and stand with about 4 minutes of work :-) EDW thanks for your prespective my friend (Long time no see BTW) As Little dragon so aptly pointed out there are many free BVH file thatare useful as a starting point but require an advanced knowledge of the poser Graph Editor to adjust them for poser once you learn the Graph editor you can animate anything you want in poser. one day soon I may bite the bullet and publish a full fledged manual on just the Graph editor as the one that comes with poser is woefully lacking to say the least.

This one, for instance. It's over 1600 frames, and only the last few seconds at the end might possibly come close to your requirements. And I had to edit the .bvh file *before* importing it into Poser, just to make sure the joint hierarchy used the same naming conventions as a Poser figure's internal bone structure (hip, rThigh, rShin, rFoot, etc.).

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Mon, 14 April 2003 at 6:41 AM

Are you serious about writing a manual, wolf359? Spline interpolation alone would need an entire chapter to itself.

I'd love to write "Poser animation,The missing Manual" as soon as my Life settles Down a bit. Right now im getting Divorced, possibly moving soon, etc (you know the usual midlife crisis stuff) But i do want to finish this animated scene from blade runner Im am working on since Ive done all the modeling for the set peices. But any way Credos Lifeforms 3.9 is the tool for BVH editing outside of poser because it has a true timeline and will let you Combine and reverse BVH motion and export only those frames of the motion you need to poser. and the lifeforms 3.9 manual is extraordinarily well written!!! as far as software manuals Go

I don't know if this will help, but it was a motion included on 3D World issue 37 cd. There are quite a lot of motions on there. It is one by Mantis Motion on TurboSquid. It imported easily enough, and I deleted almost the latter half of the anim to get the file size down, it was 13 seconds.

I have one that I posted in another message, but only one person responded so I haven't uploaded the pz2 to my site. Ed
