Subject: Need help with Armor

I am trying to do as much post-render work as possible on my artwork, and had as idea for my latest work to draw just about everything (including armor plating over shoulder). Everything I have done so far, sword scabbard, clothing, ect. has turned out pretty good, but I am having trouble with the armor. I have the shape and have a start on the shading and lighting, but everything I have completed so far looks too cartoon-ish! I did a silver tip on the scabbard that looks perfect, but cannot manage to replicate the effect on the larger armor. This time I have tried to start with a darker color to see if it will help, but I am still stuck! I have not darkened the edges yet, nor applied shadows. Somebody please HELP!! I will give notice to all significant help when (if) I post the completed work! Please respond here or email me at dall@tianas-dream.com Cheers, hope to hear from someone!

If I can't do much better than what you see here, I was thinking about giving it some cuts and scratches to make it look more worn and used. I am experimenting with this right now but haven't found a technique that looks real yet. Not gonna give up, though. Cheers

You might try to find a good image to use as a reflection map. Apply it over the armor, distort the image to match the shape, then apply it very transparently.

Bonestructure's suggestion of the reflection map might really help, especially if you used in context with the Displace filter. This link does a great job of explaining it, better than I could. http://www.gurusnetwork.com/tutorials/photoshop/displace6.html Adding cuts and scratches would help alot to I bet. Hope this helps. Good luck. :)
