I've placed a picture texture on this chair but can't get it to wrap properly. I've always had this problem and changing how the texture is placed doesn't seem to help. If I select Random the side will look fine but I lose the pattern on the seat. Any suggestions please. This is very frustrating. Cie

I'm having the same problem, so I second Cie's request: any suggestion? S.

SAMS3D ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 12:23 PM

I suggest you UV map it if you have not and use the box mapping and then it should work great....let me know if you some help. Sharen

Trouble ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 1:13 PM

Never thought to UV map it. Would you happen to have the link to the free UV mapper? Thanks. Cie

Trouble ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 1:29 PM

Never mind Sharon I found the UVmapper but it is only for .obj files and the chair is a 3ds file. Any other suggestions?

SAMS3D ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 1:31 PM

can you convert it? If not I can, just email it to me, I will send it right back to you....really doesn't take that long, but if you think it isn't that important that is up to you. Sharen :-)

Trouble ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 1:36 PM

Thanks so much Sharen. What's your e-mail addy? Cie

SC@sams3d.com.....I will get it right back to you? Sharen

Thanks Sharen, on its way. :D Cie

Claymor ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 2:49 PM

mapping the texture as "object cubic" usually works for me

Zanny ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 2:50 PM

Download either wings3d ( http://www.wings3d.com ) or Anim8tor ( http://www.anim8or.com ). Both of these FREE modelers allow easy convertion between 3ds and obj file formats. wings seems the best as anim8or somethings places weird extra polygons where i dont need them. Have fun Zanny

Trouble ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 3:14 PM

Claymor - tried object cube and it didn't work either. Actually tried each type of placement in order to find one that worked. Only Random which wasn't what I wanted. Zanny - I'll go take a look. Thanks everybody for the suggestions and help. Cie

Stephen Ray ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 3:23 PM

Trouble, You can convert the chair to obj, by exporting it out of Bryce ( open the edit menu then ctrl + D key while menu is open. )

Stephen Ray

Trouble ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 3:25 PM

Stephen Ray - Tried that. Selected the chair and the export option was greyed out so I couldn't pick it. Thought it was rather strange but how can you argue with Bryce? Cie

SAMS3D ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 5:14 PM

Cie, it is in your box all ready for you...Sharen

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 7:15 PM

Aye, if you can't do it in UVMapper, maybe try making a duplicate of the chair, and boolean off the top section on the first chair, with a neg. cube or something. Then, on the second chair, alter the texture to fit the image! It woudl take a lot less time, but of course it might only work from this particular camera angle.

Claymor ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 8:07 PM

If mapping doesn't work I usually do the boolean trcik too...cut the thing in half and map each piece seperately.

foleypro ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 8:43 PM

No what Stephen meant was if you imported the file as 3ds then what you need to do is click on the E in the menu next to the object in your working window then when the Smooth object window is showing you need to ctrl+D and save as an Object file so then you will be able to bring into UV mapper and map it...Also does these Converters convert from Quake,Unreal,Mds? to objects?

antevark ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 9:47 PM

those are just free modellers, which can (naturally) import+export. I'm guessing you want to export objects to a Quake or Unreal native 3d object format? There may or may not be something on the internet for that. Google's your best bet.

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 10:49 PM

Unreal has a lot more power, when it comes to objects, than practically anything else in the industry. It actually comes with all of the tools you'd need to do such a thing. Maya, Upaint, UnrealEd, blah blah...

antevark ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 11:05 PM

hmm..... i think those games are slowly destroying my brain....

Here's what folepro is saying. As long as it is originally an imported mesh, Bryce CAN export it and CAN convert it. Just click on the following. AS

Not to mention, Bryce gives you 17 different Mapping options to try, in addition to the "Edit Texture" abilities you see here. AS

antevark ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 11:16 PM

another thing to add to the bryce 6 wishlist... being able to export uv maps(even for metaballs).....

AgentSmith ( ) posted Thu, 17 April 2003 at 11:19 PM

Anything 4 sided, I suggest "Object Cubic", (as Claymor said) and then, if it still looks strange, try tweaking the scale. (which is that first XYZ control you see in the "Edit Texture" box, which reads XYZ=25%) Something as small as a chair seat should look correct anywhere from -2% to +10%. It depends on the size of your original texture of course, but that might serve as rough guide. AS

Agent Smith you da man...

Trouble ( ) posted Fri, 18 April 2003 at 8:06 AM

Wow, you guys are so great!! Thanks for all the suggestions and helps. I've learned something new with the Ctrl-D in the smoothing window and why I've always had a problem with picture mats on objects. Thanks again! :D Cie
