Subject: Creating Dead Leaves on the Ground

satfj ( ) posted Fri, 18 April 2003 at 11:13 AM · edited Thu, 09 January 2025 at 2:47 PM

I want to retreive a leaf from the Red maple plant veg in vue to create a dead leaf to be used on the ground for a fall scene. How do I do that? Thanks

MightyPete ( ) posted Fri, 18 April 2003 at 11:16 AM

Just one leaf? I'd scan it then use a alpha plain. The easy way. The much harder way is use it for a terrain then apply the image to it. You not going to gain much though for all the work that is envolved. The leaf is thin so it's sort of poinless. Leaves? Well I'd use a seamless texture personally.

I like your first option.....but I dont have a leaf to scan that's precisely why I want to retreive it from the Maple Leaf Veg tree in Vue. I don't seem to find that jpeg anywhere in the Vue file. Thanks

I have a tutorial how to use only 1 branche of a Vue tree. But for one leaf, I would do it as MightyPete. :-)Guitta guittalogo.GIF

Thanks, I agree..... but is there a way to get that leaf (jpeg, giff) from the Vue file?

gebe ( ) posted Fri, 18 April 2003 at 11:51 AM

The only way you can get this (but it is not worth the time), is to apply a red maple tree mat to a plane, set the scale to 1, then render it and open the final image in your paint program. Extract 1 leaf, copy past it, create an alpha of it and then use it in Vue as an alpha plane. Guitta

If the leaf you need has to be seen from close up, I can send you one that is a maple leaf. Need your e-mail address then. Guitta

Ya steal the one off the tree in Vue. Use the tutorial to render one branch then crop it so only one leaf shows up on the new picture. Or find a leaf. To get perfect results. Find a really good leaf with a clean solid color background. You have to make a mask ay? Remember that, There is sevearl ways of doing it.. My way would be. Find a good leaf image with a solid backround single color. Photoshop: If you don't have it well figure it out for the program you use. Make the mask Select the background color with the wand adjusting the amount of colors selected till all the say white is selected. Copy > paste as new layer> Select load selection, fill solid white 100% select inverse fill 100% solid black. Mask is done. Copy all paste as new image. Select white part again. Now the tricky part. Find red or leaf colors that represent the leaf well. Fill the white part with this new color on the original image. Say it's a fall leaf so you would fill it a slightly red color. It will make the mask work better cause it will be blending to red instead of blending to white. Get it? Ok I need coffee I guess. I only made like 30 spelling mistakes.

Thanks for the maple leaf link...I used to think there was a jpeg for all the plant leaf and flowers somewhere in Vue.

MightyPete ( ) posted Fri, 18 April 2003 at 12:51 PM

Well there attached to a branch. I think there is about 12 leaves in the texture. I don't think there is a single leaf texture inside the program.

I have 206 images I have scanned, about 50/50 on white or black background of leaves all summer/fall last year. They need a little cleaning, but work great for alpha planes. Anyone who wants them, let me know (about 52meg, zipped). They are all PNG format, at 24 bit.

MightyPete ( ) posted Mon, 21 April 2003 at 9:50 PM

Jeyers: Pete's tip of da day: When you scan leaves do it at night, turn all the lights off. Open scanner. place leaves. Scan leaves. Did I say close the lid? Don't close it. You get a almost perfect black backgound then that can be cut easily to make the alpha. Works better than black paper.

jeyers ( ) posted Mon, 21 April 2003 at 10:07 PM

Yeah, all the black ones used the "lights-out" method, but in a dark room during the day. The light background ones are with the lid closed, the others with it open. You get a lot better images with the scanner open!
