Subject: HappyWorldLand link

JohnRender ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 9:33 AM · edited Tue, 03 December 2024 at 2:04 PM

Has anyone else tried the HappyWorldLand link, to the right, under the Web Ring Top 15 links? The last time I went there, I got numerous pop-up ads as well as a box asking me if I wanted to download a "Time Sync" program... which is probably just more spyware in disguise. I clicked the link today and I get a page not found error. So, is this site working? And if not, how did it get to be #15 in the Web Ring?

HappyWorldLand issue #2: ActiveX plug-in #1: If it claims to be a "Save [misspelling of "Safe"] free software that gives you exclusive offers", then you know it must be spyware.

HappyWorldLand issue #4: poop-up ad for ForutuneCity Marketplace. Hmm... I could use a mini-camera! I'm glad I saw this pop-up ad when I did. Now, who says they're not having "issues" with that site? Personally, I think sites with these kinds of pop-ups and spyware ads should be banned. But, hey, I'm not an admin, so what do I know, right?

Phantast ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 10:00 AM

What's needed is a browser that instead of a check box saying "Always trust content from XXX" says "Never trust content from XXX" - so once you check this you never see that popup again.

Turtle ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 10:21 AM

"Orbit Browser this I'm sick of removing from my computer, clock, and something called safe shopping.

frank-b- ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 11:07 AM

"Save" is probably not a misspelling of "Safe", but short for "SaveNow", and indeed spyware.

See http://www.thiefware.com/whenu/ or

for more information.

"Install any dubious plugin and agree to all terms of the service" from "Whoever internet" is also asking for trouble.

A name like "Happy World" is enough to keep me away! :)

Nance ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 1:02 PM

tlabauch was a major player in the community, contributing a really huge number of free skin maps in the early P4 days but stopped coming here some time ago. Sounds as though his old Happyworldland site has finally been completely abandonded and infested with cyber-vermin.

This is kind of sad really. Tim Tlaubach was a big contributor in the early days of Poser. And never charged for anything. It's disgraceful what the site host has done to his site.

Here is a link to the Posette Files. I suggest you get em while you can.

Roy G ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 1:18 PM

That should have read Tim Laubach not Tim Tlaubach. Sorry Tim.

Dizzie ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 1:28 PM

Sorry Sandoppe but I agree with Roy...Tim's Happyworld Land was a tremendous inspiration to alot of people including me, when we started using Poser....We we all grateful for all his great textures....sorry you miss out because you are bias against names....I wonder where he is now....

EvoShandor ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 1:48 PM

dizzie, I agree with sandoppe...that name alone is enough to give me nightmares. Happy World Land with the evil attack clowns and the creepy carnival music..... shivers....and evil witch laughs in a dark house of mirrors... shivers Evo

sandoppe ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 2:01 PM

I can see the original owner/operator contributed a lot to an earlier Poser community and I suspect at a time before "pops" and annoying installers were invading our computers. I'm sure if I had been a member in those days, I would have loved his site. But today, names like that seem to be grabbed up by those with "no good intention"....thus my cynical comment. I must admit, I got the same visual reaction as EvoShandor did when I read the name :) No offense intended to Tim Tlaubach who originally created the site to help others.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 3:34 PM

"Now, who says they're not having "issues" with that site? Personally, I think sites with these kinds of pop-ups and spyware ads should be banned. But, hey, I'm not an admin, so what do I know, right?" ****** How ungrateful you people are! How blinded by prejudice!! (yes, pre-JUDGING) And how short your memories!!! (Last year, I had a clue from a sysop that JohnRanter's account was a clone and that he'd been here a while.) I suppose you all avoid "DigitalBabes" because you fear seeing cybernetic anime-style females with big boobs? What about all those "worthless girls" from HackWorthless' site? I could go on, but I might lose my temper. (Note to mods... I am really sick of JohnRanter and his never-ending complaints.) Tim did this community a major service by providing quite literally dozen and dozens and dozens of free high-quality skin textures so that we wouldn't be stuck with the ones in the box. He gave us variety. A large number of the commercial textures and freebies by other "creators" were nothing more than his textures with slight modifications. He got ripped off almost as badly and as often as Traveler... but he kept the site up anyway. Most of you ignoramuses don't realize how much bandwidth costs. Some of the people here have been hit with $1000-plus monthly bills from their ISP if they dared to post something people liked. If you use a free-host, there is a risk that you will be kicked off for exceeding bandwidth. This means that your ENTIRE webpage with ALL its work and features is now pixel-dust. Just search the threads for the horror stories and tales of people begging for hosts... this isn't a new situation. Some of the items lost are lost for good. The free stuff providers get NO help from Renderosity, despite being one of the main features which drove their growth and still provide the chief reason people come here. Blaming someone because he can't afford to pay you to download his stuff is pretty darned shabby in my book. If a creator has to use a free service, and that host uses pop-ups... why don't you get a pop-up blocker or just don't go to his site? Kicking off someone who nurtured this community, and slapping him in the face is quite simply uncalled-for. Denying everybody else the opportunity to download and enjoy the use of a item is selfish in the extreme. Constantly ranting got old long ago. How about either showing some gratitude, some understanding and compassion, or if you can't do that... just shut your mouth!!! If anybody should be banned, it certainly isn't the guy who GAVE us these textures in the first place. Carolly

sandoppe ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 4:01 PM

Actually, you're quite right Carolly. My glib comment was based on a quick review of the thread and an initial reaction to the name. I wasn't around when Tim started his site, being very new to Poser. But you know....when I click on the link, I get none of the pops mentioned or offers for spyware (and believe me, I have no spyware on my system!). I do have Norton Security, with the ad blocker on....so I guess it must work:) Only runs about $49/year and that includes the antivirus program as well.

Nance ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 4:51 PM

...and to also correct my misspelling, the correct name, from one of his readme's, was/is Tim Laubach or tlaubach. Also sorry for the mistake Tim.

EsnRedshirt ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 5:45 PM

Oh, btw, to get rid of spyware, try Ad-Aware (at www.lavasoft.de I believe). Freeware, works great. Gets rid of Gator, Comet Cursor, and all those other annoying little tracking programs.

TMGraphics ( ) posted Mon, 28 April 2003 at 7:28 PM

I am one of the grateful members who still enjoys the works of Tim Laubach. He made a serious impact on this community with his generosity and kindness. I applaud him as I ponder the monies he could have made. Or lost, depending on your view. Many Thanks To You Tim! TMGraphics

mondoxjake ( ) posted Tue, 29 April 2003 at 1:29 AM

Your big problem is not the site or popups...it is from using that piece of trash Internet Explorer. I get all icons, no popups, and clean d/ls from there with Netscape and NeoPlanet. Happy Worldland [as it was once called] was one of the premier and best Poser sites on the Web a few years ago...and Tim Laubach was a master texture producer...and I never saw a negative comment of any kind ever from him. A real gentleman and a true artist.

JohnRender ( ) posted Tue, 29 April 2003 at 8:06 AM

{How ungrateful you people are! } Well, then, I supopse I should apologize. We should all be greatful that there are sites that give us such great free items like Orbit Browser, Save and Free, and Gator. So what if these things are known spyware? So what if they're an invasion of privacy? And so what if Renderosity condones this activity by allowing the site ot be in the Webring... much less #15! {I suppose you all avoid "DigitalBabes" because you fear seeing cybernetic anime-style females with big boobs?} Nice attempt to deflect the argument, but you're missing the point completely. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the content. In fact, if I could get the thumbnails to work, I'm sure the content is good. I am questioning why a site needs to have pop-up windows asking people to install spyware. If "DigitalBabes" has spyware, then I would be posting the same message. The argument of "he has to pay for his site" doesn't hold much weight either. There thousands of ways to make money without having to resort to spyware plug-ins. {If anybody should be banned, it certainly isn't the guy who GAVE us these textures in the first place.} I'm not saying that the guy be banned, just that his site be reviewed for current content. Yes his site (and stuff) may be excellent, but the site is infested now. Is spyware really what we want to give to the community? Do we really want new people going there and thinking that they have to download spyware in order to use the site or the textures? Well, okay, if that's want you want, I'll stop complaining. If Renderosity is making sure they aren't legally liable for free stuff by putting in mod, they need to do the same thing with webring submissions. After all, it's the same thing- someone can get infected by a site that they went to from here.

jade_nyc ( ) posted Tue, 29 April 2003 at 12:28 PM

It's very simple people - when things like gator, and comet cursors pop up - just don't accept them! lol They can't get installed on your computer unless you say yes! And I know this because I just had to have a chat with my 12 year old about accepting Gator, comet cursors and xupiter search on my computer. Renderosity has no control over what individuals have on their private web sites. Perhaps these ads and pop-ups continue to allow Tim to offer these goodies to the poser community for FREE. If you don't like ads and pop-ups then just don't freaking go there!!! But please don't bitch and moan and spoil it for the rest of us! It'll be really great when no one offers free stuff anymore because of all the whiners and bandwidth leechers.

JohnRender ( ) posted Tue, 29 April 2003 at 2:48 PM

{Good point John, when are you going to have the tutorial for newbies on "avoiding spyware" ready?} That's not a bad idea. I'll see what I can come up with. If I make a tutorial, at least then my complaints will have a little more weight if I tell people how to avoid the spyware. {Tim has nothing to do with the spyware coming from the site} Then who does? Ahh... Angelfire, his hosting company? Why doesn't he go a real provider then, instead of a "free" one... "free" meaning no cost to the person, but pop-ups and spyware to visitors.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Tue, 29 April 2003 at 2:56 PM

Thing is that Tim probably has no clue that they are even on his site. When it was created they weren't and Tim has pretty much been busy with other stuff for some time. I see a post or two a year from him. I also know my site originally was to have one banner in either pop up or in the top of the page. Since then it has added more and more but they weren't by me and they didn't inform me of the changes. Service providers often do what they want for free sites.

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Tue, 29 April 2003 at 3:01 PM

"Then who does? Ahh... Angelfire, his hosting company? Why doesn't he go a real provider then, instead of a "free" one... "free" meaning no cost to the person, but pop-ups and spyware to visitors. " Yes, the free hosting companies shove all kinds of things onto sites. And he doesn't buy a site because he is no longer an active member of the community but is still gracious enough to prvide the tons of textures he did for free ... Or maybe you can buy one for him?

Phantast ( ) posted Wed, 30 April 2003 at 5:22 AM

I think this is surely the case. There are a number of abandoned sites around and this is one of them. I'm sure Tim has not looked at it in ages and has no idea what changes Angelfire has made. Similarly, I had all my downloads at a Geocities site (now Yahoo). But now that page is abandoned, because I have a better site at comicbabecentral. If Yahoo changed its advertising system to include Gator pop-ups, I wouldn't know about it, but someone who still linked to that old site would find out.

Marque ( ) posted Wed, 30 April 2003 at 8:14 AM

Just protect your system or close the spyware box when it opens or don't go to the site, but there are plenty of folks who can't afford to pay for textures that look at this site like a gold mine. This guy has been around for a long time, I used his textures before Vickie 1 came out and Posette was all we had. Johnrender why don't you host his stuff for him on your real provider? Marque

praxis22 ( ) posted Wed, 30 April 2003 at 9:10 PM

I'm running Explorer and will continue to use it. I use Ad-aware and Ad-watch and don't have problems. I'm running into a TON of paid sites that still try to load crap onto my system, so it really doesn't matter if it's a free site. Marque

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Thu, 01 May 2003 at 9:06 AM

Some people do pay to "give something away." That's because some people object to the under-handed tricks that some of these free web site hosts use in their advertising. Some people would see that as an "integrity issue." Besides, you can get a 300MB web site for $35 a year. That's not much compared to the amount of money many of us spend on Poser stuff. Those of us who object to these under-handed popups are not ungrateful. We just don't like to endure that crap in the name of "free stuff."

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Thu, 01 May 2003 at 11:10 AM

You might want to read my message, then read between the lines. We already know there are many ways to question insult, or challenge generosity The integrity issue lies in associating oneself with a web site host that lacks integrity. I choose not to indulge such practices which might detract from my own integrity by association. You can quibble all you want, but those popups will irritate and inconvenience people unnecessarily.

jade_nyc ( ) posted Thu, 01 May 2003 at 11:25 AM

illusions - people either get it or they don't. And obviously some people here just don't get it. All I know is my mother taught me that when someone gives you a gift - you say thank you. You don't complain about the wrapping the gift comes in and you certainly don't complain about the gift. You accept the gift and say thanks or you don't accept the gift and you say 'no thanks'.

PeterWahoo ( ) posted Thu, 01 May 2003 at 2:14 PM

So if someone gives you a gift, but throws it in a pile of shit in front of you, you should say thank you. You just don't get it!

kbennett ( ) posted Thu, 01 May 2003 at 3:00 PM

Except, of course, it's not the person giving you the gift that is throwing the shit. It's someone off to one side. You still say thank you to the giver of the gift and then punch the shit thrower ;)

jade_nyc ( ) posted Thu, 01 May 2003 at 3:17 PM

The holier-than-thou attitude is just the gilding on the package of recognizable traits. If it is him, he is again proven to be an ungrateful greedy gumpus... given the fact that he has bragged so often about scarfing (vacuuming?) all the available free stuff on every site he comes across. Let the other guys pay to give him even more? He probably wants it burned to CD and hand-delivered with free shipping, too. :< Carolly

JohnRender ( ) posted Fri, 02 May 2003 at 9:15 AM

{All I know is my mother taught me that when someone gives you a gift - you say thank you.} This is an interesting point. But, I think this comparison would be better: Someone gives you a nice, free gift, but says that you have to pick it up at Sav-Mart. So, you go to Sav-Mart to get the really neat and cool item. Did I mention that it was a really neat & cool item? Keep that in mind as you enter the store... When you get there, 3 sales people block the entrance to the store until you push them out of the way (they call these "pop-ups"). Then, a midget salesperson walks under your legs the whole way until you notice him and push him away also (called a "pop-under"). Then, another saleperson asks if you want to wear a nifty, free jacket... which, coincidentally, contains a homing device which tracks your every move and will cause more sales people to be attracted to you (they call it "spyware" with "cookies"). Finally, you get to the counter to pick up you free item. But, as you leave the store, more sales people jump on you (called "on_close pop-ups".) You go back home and complain to the person who gave you the free item. He says that you should be grateful that he made the item available and only then tells you that you should known better than to have gone into the store without protection. After all, you could have used Sales-Blocker, Sales-Aware, and Sales-Away to keep the sales people out of your way. Why didn't you? So, do you thank your "friend" or do you yell at him for making his cool items available at that place? Do you even want to be his friend anymore since he associates with a place like Sav-Mart, that assaults you when you go there? {You're pretty outspoken for a "Newbie" that hasn't really contributed anything yourself.} Ah, the old "you don't have anything posted, so your opinion doesn't count" idea. Well, then, I suppose movie critics' opinions don't count because they've never made a movie. I guess music reviewers' opinions don't count because they've never made a CD. And I guess art reviewer's opinions don't count because they've never drawn a masterpieces? Look, I can't sing. I know I can't sing. But, I know Michael Jackson's recent songs stink. So, just because I have never made an album, does that make my opinion worth any less? Why is it that someone's opinion is considered less worthy if they don't have a gallery, free stuff, or a store? Why does this matter?

HappyWorldLand was probably one of the most important Poser sites there was when it was in its prime. It is a shame that the ungrateful few want to tarnish Tim Laubach's reputation.

I've provided a link to go and download a free pop-up stopper, that way no one will have to look it up and say I'm a poop-slinger.

RealitysPoison ( ) posted Sun, 08 June 2003 at 2:46 PM

Ugh! You are all entitled to your opinions. But be forewarned that all you are going to do is lose people's generosity. When we start to "expect" from those who give, they tend to just stop giving. As said before, Tim created these wonderful textures for FREE quite awhile back. And has made many of us very happy over the years. When he was "leaving", and no longer had time to upkeep the site, he could have just pulled them all. Happiness for all of you complaining, but not for those of us who will always remember HappyworldLand and the good old days of Poser when people were actually kind and generous and respectful. (Not that they aren't all today, but the "feel" of the community has changed over the years.) So Tim left the site up so that anyone who still wanted them could get them. So what do you people want? Should he pull them just for you and your ungratiousness because he no longer has the time to spend on the account and what his "free" server is doing? Should he have to spend money because of you and your ungratiousness? Let me tell you. After reading this thread, the last thing most people would do is spend money just to offer his stuff to someone who wouldn't appreciate it. Frankly, reading threads like this it makes a person who does spend for their own site question how worth it it is. And yes, Ron, we are all well aware of who you are. Notice she said "newbie" with quotes. Changing you username can't change the person.

Permanent bannings are supposed to be PERMANENT... otherwise they lose all effectiveness both as a deterrant and as a way to remove undesirables from the community before they poison it completely. Ron Knights, and all of his aliases, has been banned from just about all of the artist communities for his own destructive actions. In other threads, under his current alias, he has managed to attack Anton directly at least 3 times. He has irritated maclean (and a few others) by his constant touting of PBooost. And he has gotten huffy then said "let the fur fly" at least once. He is looking for another scene to make him the center of attention and none of us want to give it to him. He will keep poking until he gets it, though. Warnings and probations simply don't work with him. He is very clever. The way he played the restaurant incident with x2000 was both masterfully done and terrible to watch unfold. How many people did he drag into that one? Doug banned him and his alises 3 times from the 3d-cc. He was the only person banned from 3dCommune. He was the only person banned from PoserPros (and what he did to Mehndi while she was undergoing open-heart surgery was shameful in the extreme). He has been banned from here under his own name, AND the nicks poserfool, chrisjon1950, rogergordion.... for damned good reasons. Just get rid of him. Please! He is not wanted here under any name.
