Hehe.. Greed is a marvellous thing. Well.. the guy who owns the site, might want to make some money of his work? people put a lot of work into models. if you were an attorney, would you run around and give people free counselling? I doubt it.. if you want free stuff... SEARCH FOR IT! don't complain about people who want money for their work... And speaking of free stuff.. why don't you contribute with some free stuff on your page? Oh wait.. couldn't do that.. then you're not qualified as a freeloader.. EG

tebop, it sounds like you really aren't aware of just how much bandwidth costs these days and the amount of time and effort it takes to create quality 3d models and textures.
Try learning a little about the process of model and texture creation, maybe try it yourself. Perhaps then you'll understand why skilled modelers and texturers deserve compensation for their work if they choose to ask for it.
Funny, when i first got into Poser, I wondered the opposite "Why are these guys giving all this neat stuff away for free?" I think people are being a little quick to judge here, Tebop may not be a "freeloader"; Maybe he doesn't realise that it actually costs money to give stuff away on the internet. Places like Poserworld charge for membership to recover the cost of running the site. Hosting companies charge them according to how much bandwidth the downloads use up. They used to be free until the bandwidth bill got so high thyat they had a choice between closing and charging for access to the site. Although there isn't much on sensu-japan that interests me, the stuff is nice and would be worth paying the $18 for someone who is interested in it. Poserworld charges $30, but it has way more stuff (can you say "Jackpot"?)... Only a few people actually make a living at it, but most people who sell stuff make just enough to make an otherwise expensive hobby pay for itself. I have no objection to paying for well-made stuff as long as it's reasonably priced and is something I have a use for. One thing about the free stuff is that it frequently (but not always) has usage restrictions or other strings attatched, but stuff you pay for doesn't.

I wonder if it is bebop, too. Again. The desire to run around and make noise and stir up complaint seems to fit. No matter how many times you ban these people, their need for attention brings them back. Spoiled brats. If Poser didn't exist, artists would be paying hundreds if not thousands of dollars per model (check out that infamous baseball at TurboSquid for industry standard pricing). Charging pennies in exchange for volume works only as long as people recognize the quality they are getting and gladly make those purchases. Hmmm... $18 for hundreds of characterss/poses/morphs/lights and more being made? Seems like more than fair value. Apparently there are 94 complete characters morphed from head to toe on this site (the Steph morphs looked pretty interesting to me). That is a chunk of work! I'm fairly sure that I've picked up one or two of Sensu's weekly free downloads, too. Carolly
You have to jjooooiiin, and it's not just signing up for free like here in Renderosity, you have to paaay.<?i> Tebop, allow me to formally state that the GPL/PAL licence included with my Free Stuff hereby and hereafter specifically doesn't refer to you. You can't use my free stuff for free. You have to paaay. I want $5 for the use of any item you take from my Free Stuff. So there, whiny little &$%&.*
By the way, is everybody now charging for models? Where are all the free models? A lot of us started comparing who we saw downloading our free stuff with who was buying our marketplace goods and realised thatthere was less than a 5% overlap between users. Whereupon we realised that making free stuff is great to get your name known, but once it is, the bandwidth costs of hosting it was a bit waste of our money because the people going for all the free stuff were by and large not the ones gong for the not-free stuff, and were more likely the people downloading it off of kazaa instead. Eh.
Glad I'm not the only one who thought that someone had just exchanged a B with a T. _dodger, you're my hero LOL

Is it me or do other people have noticed that, since the new rules for uploading freestuff, the free stuff area gets less uploads than before, and even less than the market place ? May be is it just a little more filtration (not seen the red textures for some days now, for instance), or may be that people get better and better at making things and getting more and more in the marketplace quality range ?
I think there's so much great free stuff in the 3d community that we often get spoiled. I've seen stuff in freebies (a lot of trekkiegrrrl and Dodger stuff - LOL) that I would have bought if sold in the MP. I was glad to see the great Batlab finally selling clothes in the MP. I hope this thread does not make creators of freebies feel unappreciated. The generosity of this community, from free items to the sharing of knowledge, is quite unique.
Compiler: I think it just seems we're getting less Free Stuff uploads because of the delay in verifying that the free upload is indeed an upload and not an underhanded way of advertising a site, or railroading a user into one of those Opt-Out programs employed by spammers and the less scrupulous online advertisers and retailers. I've run into this situation myself with one or two links from Free Stuff where I've been re-directed to a site which attempted to install spyware on my system. I recall one link tried to install the Xupiter toolbar browser hijacker, another tried to install Gator's ad/spyware package. Luckily I have applications on my system to prevent that sort of thing. It only took a few rotten apples to spoil the whole barrel. Now Renderosity has to keep an eye on its freebies. :-( Nuke
As well as _dodger and BATLAB, you can add Schlabber to the list of well-deserved contributors. I'm always amazed at the generosity of these people, and since they have been so helpful and supportive of the community, it's good to see their products on sale. May you all enjoy great success. As for Carolly's comments on industry standard pricing, yes, I have seen the cost of some models at Zygote's pro site. Wow, they are truly frightening. And they are reasonably priced by industry standards. In all honesty, the prices charged by merchants here and at the other "hobbyist" sites are very, very good. Free stuff is a privilege, not a right. Anyone who gripes that they have to actually pay for something needs taking to see a big dog.

I bought my senu-japan memebership last year, and in the three months I was a "member" there where no updates or anything. I was chatting with a fellow "poserite" the other night and asked him if the site was updated (senu-japan) and he told me, that he stopped his membership after 6 months due to no new stuff. I like the models I got from the site but the thing is the models come with no textures and there hasn't been an update since he/she did the V3 models. If you want the models it is worth the $18 to join but I wouldn't renew.

Hey - the fact that I now sell a bit doesn't mean I will stop giving away Freestuff ... lol I promised last weekend a few new poses and I think they will be ready by tomorrow (some for the store and 'some' (lol) for free) - those will cover some V3-pinup-needs (I think ;o) But thank you SamTherapy for your kind words
Sorry Dodger, I'm guilty of being part of the 95% that doesn't overlap... though some of the pay stuff I see -is- very tempting. If I had more free cash to sink into this hobby, rest assured I'd be buying lots of things. But as it is, on my budget, I'm stuck with free stuff. Still, you don't see me complaining that "all the cool stuff costs $$$!" Bandwidth does cost money; that's one of the main reasons I haven't posted any of my own freestuff (I have no plans to ever sell anything). However, maybe I'll finish writing up some of those tutorials I started and post them on this board- that should do something towards "giving back to the community"...
Oh, I still give away free stuff -- but I'm now following the rule that if I make somehting and I can sell it, I do sell it, even if I'm selling it for really cheap. If it's something like a movie prop, then I give it away free generally because I cringe at the idea of selling something almost like a movie prop with a name similar to a movie prop, usually. Esn, sell soem stuff, then you'll be able to buy with in-store credit and you won't miss the money!
Tobp is obviously not a capitalist! :) Frankly I thought the same as Martian manhunter......why are so many people giving away all this great stuff!! Tbop.....there is very little that's "free" in this world. People work hard making their creations.....they expect to get paid or at least cover their costs. For the most part, I don't think some of these folks charge enough!! :) You want free models?? Buy one of the many really good modeling programs or download one of the free not quite as good modeling programs......and make your own bud!!! Then if you're feeling really gracious, buy a domain, post all your free models and worry about how you're going to cover the cost of the bandwidth!! Jeez cripes...get a life!!

Helo, there's some free models i have downloaded from various sites. But then , i find this site called SENSU-JAPAN which promises some 100's of models if you join in membership. And from the looks of it they look great. Not that i will join, but why is it like a secrete thing. You have to jjooooiiin, and it's not just signing up for free like here in Renderosity, you have to paaay. Why doesn't he make them free?? By the way, is everybody now charging for models? Where are all the free models? Anyone know if there is a site with 100's or 10's of free Human models?
