Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 10 1:16 pm)
So we can save images then I assume. If that's the case works for me. As far as the first beta has displacement maps and some of the options of Poser 5. Right now I have a Poser 5 scene a bit over 100 MB that keeps crashing on rendering in Firefly, it will be a godsend if DAZ Studio can manage that one.
How do you get from save disabled to the ability to save images? Ive been leaving hints all over the place that at least the ability to save in jpeg-- which is limited but usable is in DAZ's interest if they want as many testers as they seem to want. I dont care if I can't use it commercially, I just have a lot on my plate right now and diddling with a non- saveable program is just that --diddling. If Daz is listening and I always assume they are, you have to CARE about the images you're producing in order to spend a lot of time on a program, when you care you want an image at the end-- in some form. Screen capture may not do it. Jpeg is a win/win solution, it's not got an alpha channel so it's not perfect, but I could do something big if I wanted to, and it's a universal format so not stepping on anybody's toes. Please. Emily
Reliable rumor has it that the renders can be saved (if you read the release and other threads in here related to DAZ|Studio, the output goes to any Renderman-compliant renderer, which prolly means that you can shoehorn your own renderer in there if you want), just not the .pz3 file (or whatever format file) itself, but the last part is likely still under discussion. HTH a little, /P
Dont put your expectations too high - 3Delight (the render engine they use) is still under development and the results it produces are promising, but nothing more. I fooled around with the current release, so I know what I am talking about. You will need a lot of shaders which do not even exist yet.
I am going to love the next couple of months!!!!! ;o)
We have Daz courting us for our custom in the Program market with public beta testing of the free modules and feedback into the development of the final version.
And in the left corner we have CL furiously fighting back with much improved (as SR3 is proving) Service Releases.
Don't you just love it when the customer finally becomes King!
I bet that as P5 SR 4 draws near "save disabled" will become a quaint notion for Daz. The market needs real and visible competitive comparisons and Daz is a real market player opting for a particular development route. Head to head will become a reality faster than we realise.
Just my 0.02

If the basic module is going to be given away free anyway (which was my last understanding of the subject) then why in the name of Zarquon would they worry about saving the file format in the beta?

Yes, unless they changed their minds!
My understanding from the initial promo stuff was that the basic module was free (1,000,000 users etc.) and extras were plug-in, pay for modules as they came on line.
I hope I do not smell a Kupa/Cl-like, pre-sales, mega-spin scenario developing!
Dan Farr please correct me if I am wrong.
I hope Daz have more sense and learned a few lessons from the most recent debacle.

Storm & Little Dragon, I posted this earlier when the question came up as to whether the base Daz Studio will remain free after beta (link to the full thread above). "rogergordian, I spoke with Dan Farr regarding whether or not the Daz Studio base will be free after the beta testing & here's the skinny... There are *NO* plans to charge for the base version of Daz Studio (beta or final) as long as the sale of plugin modules & other content support it's free distribution. If, at some point in time economic conditions change after the free release of the final version of Studio 1.0, those plans may have to be reevaluated."The point is ... it doesn't completely replace/eliminate/compete with Poser the moment it's released. Although admittedly, even with a save feature, you'll still need Poser for its content. Where else are you going to get Posette, the P4 Male, the dog, cat, horse, snake, raptor, dolphin, skeletons, mannequin, the hand figures, all that clothing, etc.?
From what I've heard DAZ will make the base module free. Pluggins are for exports to lightwave and so on. So by Save Disabled, do they mean the function is not ready yet (though it's hard to believe) or they just disable it coz they plan to give it free, anyone able to provide more details? The target was 1 million downloads, but for beta versions and save disable function? I think people will just download but unable to use it. Maybe Daz got drifted away from it's initial objective.
Where is everyone getting the idea that the beta will not allow you to save your renders? From what I know, the beta will allow us to render previously created PZ3 files, but not pose or adjust them. Why DAZ would not allow you to save the renders that Studio produces when you could render the same scene in Poser (which you already must own to have made the PZ3 to begin with) is beyond me. We need to just give DAZ time to get Studio ready and to try and not go nuts whenever something is mentioned about it...although I suppose that can be hard. ;) SnowS

I do not speak as a representative of DAZ, I speak only as a long-time member here. Be nice (and quit lying about DAZ) and I'll be nice too.
I'm confident Daz is and has learned from the Poser 5 inital release fiasco. Their customer service is first rate. I have nothing to complain about anything they've done for me so far. I'm just getting itchy about seeing or hearing anything new about the release date for the beta. I followed my instincts and decided not to get Poser 5 when it came out and haven't regretted that at all. I'd just really like to hear any "new" news about DAZ Studio or even just a progress report if it's a ways off yet. I've seen bit's an pieces here and then but still haven't seen a actual render of any Human figures yet! If Daz wants to keep mum about what's going on right now, that's ok. It's just been awhile since the Jan 31 announcement. I like most people would rather have a well designed and thought out prog rather than something half-baked released too soon. But I still want to ooh and aah at actual V3, V2, Mike2 render till the beta finally arrives!!
Reading these stuffs posted here, I suddenly have a thought that we can only do rendering with daz studio. So maybe we can save it as jpg or something. So to use daz studio, we have to build everything including the pose in poser then save the file, open it in daz studio, render, that's it? Since we can't save the files, it means we still need poser to do our poses, add clothing to characters and stuffs. But I sure hope daz studio will be out soon! After all, another program, another possibility! :) Been waiting since beginning of the year ={
Quote "The latest Digit Magazine says the first beta will be save disabled". This implies that later beta releases will have a save feature. Sounds to me as if DAZ want us to test the render interface first. Rather than try to do all things at once, they are going for a one step at a time approach. Going by the often hysterical reactions the users have given Curious Labs in this Forum, it appears DAZ is taking a more cautious approach.

If they've added considerable fuctionality to a GUI frontend for 3DeLight then that will be quite nice. If it's just a way to do a default render of a Poser file then there's not much of an advantage over simply exporting a RIB file from Poser and rendering it in BMRT or another renderer.

It's amazing to me how much we leap on every possible interpretation of every utterance from CL and/or DAZ. The base product has been planned to be free from teh word go, and has planned to have an extensive public beta-test during which program development would continue. this much I got from Dan Farr's comments in the initial thread on Daz Studio. It now appears that we won't be able to save content, only renders, in the very first initial early public beta release. From the initial thread I wouldn't be surprised if we couldn't pose with it yet either. All thoroughly sensible IMHO - a cautious step-by=-step approach. It could be that the base product will be continually developed to take into account unforseen requirements of "for-sale" add-ins that have yet to be imagined. Again, not so much of a problem I suspect. I've had my minor run-ins with Daz but, as far as I can see, on the customer service side AT LEAST they have done nothing but improve this year. Faith is a rare thing in this world, but for once I have some - in a company no less! Let's at least wait until the first FREE beta version is out before we trash it :)
This is from Daz's site concerning initial beta: "Cameras, props, scenes, and figures can be posed and manipulated using controls in the Parameter pane" Always thought one could at least do minimal posing. It has been posted on Daz's site from the very beginning that the second beta would be Save enabled. Exactly what that meant was not clear to me. You can save a file or a render or neither. I've worked betas with neither. I certianly never meant to be "hysterical" about this. I assumed Daz was monitoring the discussion, and they were, and they would clear things up to some degree. Previously someone, I think from Daz mention, possibly Dan Farr himself, that the Save Disabled version was to be tested for stabiity becuase they may intend to have it as a download later-- something along thse lines. I want Daz studio to work. That's why I've been a bit insistent on some kind of render save. No one puts in hours of time on something they can't save and show off. That's all. And thank you, Mallen, for clearing up some of it. Emily
Yes, figures etc. can be posed using both dials, and in viewport control.>> I'd be happy with the first beta if I can at least save my renders as Tiff, jpg etc. and if its features (displacement maps, reflections) are up there with the fragile unstable unreliable Poser 5 Firefly. If I can tweak my scenes by being able to adjust character poses and not loose those changes in the first beta by being able to save to some kind of file format even better.
Ok, I just asked Dan if I could mention anything about saving. The ability to save (scene format etc.) is currently in progress, and is planned to be in place before the first release. Like other things people have said were crucial to them finding DazStudio useful, the ability to save has been one of the things that has delayed the release. Simon: Yes you can save the renders as Tiff or JPG, using either hardware, or the 3Delight renderer.
I have a 100 plus MB scene that renders perfectly in Poser 4 renderer but I need Firefly displacement maps instead of Poser 4 imperfect bump maps. Firefly will once in a full moon render this scene but most of the times it will crash. The scene has just 8 Mikes 1 and two Mikes 2. Almost everything in that scene are DAZ meshes so that will be my first test with DAZ Studio.
Save disabled makes a lot of sense for the first beta release IMHO. Dunno if this is the reason, but by doing so they can freely address any and all problems associated with the file formats WITHOUT having to worry about backward compatability of those formats for work saved by users of the first release. (Yes, they could just say that saved files may not be readable by B2, but they would probably get lynched here when B2 came out, no? ;-) So a pain for B1 testers? Yes. An advantage in the long run? Absolutely. And if save-disabled is too much to stomach - then just don't download B1 and let others do the initial testing on your behalf. How does a limitation in B1 get to be Daz's problem? It's not as if they will be short of B1 volunteers... (In fact the rational may be as simple as ELIMINATING a significant number of testers from B1!) BTW, standard procedure in software testing: Don't rely on the product under test as the mechanism for recreating the problem scenario, esp. for the first few test releases. Else you can't isolate the initial bug from potential bugs related to the (untested) save/re-read process.
On the pro-save side of things, how many times have we encountered "out of memory" messages or other things that have crashed Poser and lost all our work in the process? Studio, being brand new, will probably crash because of the myriad systems it has to run under, so being able to save your work to find out why it crashed would be helpful, no? Otherwise, the first beta should just be a rendering machine and nothing else: no posing function, no libraries, nada -- just load in the file you made in P4 and hit render.

Okay, I don't think this link has been there that long but I'm not sure. I was looking around the Daz Main page and saw a button called Forum. When you roll over it it says "Daz Studio Discussion". I've provided the link here for the page. Once there it says "The DAZ forum will be here soon". Can it be that Daz Studio's getting closer?? I for one can't wait. It's time for a progress report in any event! Yes, I'm impatient so sue me!
