Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 20 7:20 am)
Well, you can make a mat pose file that has a large alpha channel in it and merely puts the tat on your existing texture. DAZ did this with the essence of innocence texture that has stockings and body maps that can be turned on and off. A good tat set that worked on that principal would be better for me than a full texture with tats on it.
I'm with leather-guy. I've occasionally bought a texture in spite of the fact that it has a tattoo, but never because it had one. If a texture kit comes with one tattoo and one not, I look at the price as the cost of one texture, not two. And there are a few that I have decided not to buy because they had tattoos. Fad tattoos I have no more interest in than I have in trademarked products, fad hair, body piercing, or SM apparatus. And I'm a bit suspicious of "tribal" tattoos, since the Poser community doesn't put a lot of energy into accurate ethnic morphs. Mick
I always look for tattooed textures, unfortunately there aren't a lot of different styles so that I've seen in the various mps, a lot of tribals which are nice, but you don't see any sleeves or half sleeves. It is common that some are done too dark, but not all, there are some really nice tat texs out there. But sleeves, or variation would be extremely welcomed imho
I usually add the tats myself to the texture that needs 'em. For my Catair cahracter I wanted to add some history to the character. This after all is supposed to be a middle aged mercanary who'd seen a lot in his prime. Since it's a fantasy world where the story plays I opted for some tribal tatoos. One thing though I'd LOVE to see on Mike/Steph or Vicky; Japanese Bodysuit. Cheers, Axe.
P.s. Ouside the world of Poser.. this thing called the realworld... I LOVE tatoos on women, and yes to me it's a turn on :) They's have to suit the women though, and a "My little Pony" tattoo just ain't my thing :) P.p.s. Got two tats meself.. would love to get a backpiece done one day.. but dangit they're expansive :D
one of the reasons that full body or sleeve tattos are not common is the texture layout. On Mike and Vicky there are two seams on the arm, and the mesh does not line up perfectly on the upper shoulder. Which means that making a textures that has to line up there is difficult at best. Victoria 3 however has a much more 'tatto friendly' mapping, except on the back. I am considering making a full bodysuit type tattoo and converting down to V1/2 As for purchasing textures ... I tend to buy textures in spite of the tattoos. Most tattooed textures here have unlikely size and placement. Frankly ...If I want a tattoo there I can put it on myself without much trouble :)
I love tattoos and a really well-done one is a big incentive for me to buy a texture. Had to add tats to a V3 texture a while back and it was an adventure, since I'm a slow Photoshop learner, but it worked OK. The two textures I've bought most recently have extensive tattoos and I just love the way they look in kind of dark, moody lighting, especially Lilakoi (sp?) from RDNA :)
As of right now, the V3 texture in progress has 1 non-tattooed texture & 4 tattooed textures (will probably end up being more). Trust Me when I say... these aren't your ordinary tattoos. I really wish I could show you some renders, but I NEVER release pics till its u/l to the MP & in pending. Simply because, there are way too many idea thieves out there. Thomas
Hmmm... I'm generally with LG and mick... I think that anyone who wishes a tattoo in one of their renders is probably going to want to design it themselves. Certainly tattoos are a matter of personal taste... even specifically down to the design... One man's meat is another's pudding, etc. So as long as the texture pack has a plain, non tattooed version, you'll be OK. H:)
I though it was one man's mead is another man's poison, or am I missing the point? :) Though on the subject of tattoos, as a man with a full right arm myself I always find tattoos on women to be ugly, more because they interrrupt the form than anything else. It's got very little to do with design, I just find that women never have "big" tattoos done, so the work they do have done is usually "stranded" somwhere, so that it interrupts the eye, without actually pleasing it. That said, I have seen some "big" tattoos that I like, I'm especially fond of irezumi dragons. I've seen some scroll work for the lower back that's quite good, but I still think it detracts more than it adds... Would I buy a tatoo'ed texture? That would depend on the tattoo, though in any case I'd probably prefer to have it as a seperate image, so that I could add it to other textures, being as I'm a big fan of SteffyZ and all :) later jb
I've only bought a few textures, and would never buy anything which only had tattoos. They wouldn't be to my taste in style or placement. The only tattoos I'd put on a rendered character would be authentic ones for that person's era. If I ever did an aborigine, he'd be properly scarified. I'd do the research and I'd do the art. Tribal? Bah! There are some pretty handsome designs, but they aren't from any tribe on this world. Carolly
rather than voicing my opinion on tattoos, i'm going to make suggestions for easier building. one - dark whisper's texture converter would allow you to switch back and forth between V3 and V2 textures, which, since they have seams in completely different places, would enable you to take care of edges. two- for "tribal" or plain black tatts, or anything that involves no more than a few colors, i'm betting a vector tool like adobe illustrator, macromedia freehand, or even macromedia fireworks would be much, much, much easier than drawing by hand. bezier curves can take some time to get used to, but once you do, the world's your oyster ;). you can even say get some sort of reference (say for japanese dragons) or make something general with pen and paper, bring it into a vector program, have the program trace the bitmap, and then manipulate anchor points and such to change it or clean it up or whatever.
Too much tribal there already. Waaay too much. Probably because it's the easiest to draw. Try some traditional or Japanese styles in back pieces and sleeves and legs. That'd be different. Carolly said: Tribal? Bah! There are some pretty handsome designs, but they aren't from any tribe on this world. Well, I agree with the Bah in that tribal is a bit overdone, especially in the Poser world. However, I severely disagree with this statement. I think the Gutterpunk tribe and Parisite Goth tribes of Portland both fit the bill fine, and both have loads of ink, and though the tribal is more common on the latter it appears on both. I've seen tribal work on lots of gangstas as well. Please explain to me the anthropological difference between a tribe and a street gang. Finally, allow me to point out that the name for the style is 'Tribal Style', not 'Tribal', in actuality. Therefore the style never claimed to be an authentic represenation of the tattoos of more traditional tribes, but rather a style of tattooing that is designed to cary the style of the authentic ritual tattoos of many traditional tribal societies. The fact that the people with them are often found to be members of modern subculturally-biased tribes is simply an act of life imitating art. So, Carolly, what if you wanted to do a render of some gutterpunks hanging out spanging near the train station? If you did the research you'd find plenty of tribal, and if you wanted it to look authentic there'd be a fair number of bad tats covered up with tribal work because it's good for that. And a number of bad and jailhouse tats. And a lot of things written on knuckles.
Dodger, Hmm... render has other meanings. One renders pigfat, too, on the way to making soap. Is "hanging out spanging" anything like "hanging out in the freezer"? (I've heard the word "chill" used in a recreational way.) It is hard to type with tongue wedged in cheek, but if I'm to render gutterpunks I ought to know things like this. Also, isn't it necessary to fatten them up a bit first? Most of the ones I've seen have been mere sticks. Carolly
Well My tat is definately tribal, the design is at least 2,400 years old, and the "tribe" were Scythians, (Not sure if they were Royal or not though, never read the book :) As for modern "tribal" tattoos I always assumed it was a marketting ploy, nobody is going to go into a tattoo parlour and ask for a "line art doodle" :P later jb

Hi, I'm in the process of doing a few V2 & V3 textures. I'm wondering where the majority stands on tattooed textures, realistic tattoos, NOT cheezy or fake looking. Mostly tribal, & gothic in origin. Thanks, Thomas
