Hey guys, Last week, I landed a contract to produce a three minute HD animation for Bravo! Television. The animation is about a flower called Radik... Radik is a ballet dancing flower whose mission is to try and impress Anya, the beautiful purple tiped Tulip. I NEED YOUR HELP!! I'm looking for one of you fantastic and talented guys to help develop what Radik would look like. The person chosen will get a credit in the film along with my undying affection.. haha...

Here is a VERY VERY ROUGH posting of what Radik would look like..

Dash101 ( ) posted Wed, 11 June 2003 at 9:30 PM

Here are the paramaters of the character: - Must be this type of flower - Must have some humanistic facial features Ie: Eye balls, Eye lids, Lips The character doesnt have to be functional.. Just some 3D Sketches to give him some life.. If you have any further comments, PM ME. The deadline will be Friday of next week. This isn't a competition so dont go fancy.. Just see what you come up with.. :) -Alex

Dash101 ( ) posted Wed, 11 June 2003 at 9:32 PM

On a final note, the skeches will be brough into the animation house and used by the animation team who will build in off the blue prints provided... If nothing else, its a shot at getting your name in the credits of a movie and getting a free High Defention DVD for free of the completed film... -alex

wow dude!! congrats, just shows that people are starting to notice your skills. If i have any ideas, ill get right on it and foward them to you as soon as possible!

Dash101 ( ) posted Wed, 11 June 2003 at 11:32 PM

Woody, The basic ideas and paramaters for the character are as stated above. I would LOVE to see your ideas. In a nut-shell, RADIK is lovable but sorta geeky looking plant. He's got alot of gusto in him, but hes the kinda "guy" who could do anything he wanted to if he could just believe in himself. Although producing films is actually what I do in the real world, I just animate stuff here at Renderosity for fun. (Hobby). The actual production animation will be out sourced.. *NOTE: Screenplay is available.. Let me know and I'll email it out to anyone interested...

dash, first things first, if it's for bravo! (as in the canadian television) it has to be uncut ;) err.. or was that showcase... anyway, my only suggestion would be for you to put the eyes and mouth on the flower itself rather than on the stalk ;)

Dash101 ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 12:43 AM

Uncut? lol.. (Yes thats showcase!) :) In terms of eye and mouth, thats totally up to you guys. Feel free to create the image however you like. The 'winner' will be chosen next saturday and emailed ASAP.

kromekat ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 2:15 AM

Lol! - I shall have to remember to do this the next time I am under pressure and have no inspiration! :P

Well... you landed a contract and now you are searching for somebody who does it for you free? Correct me if I'm wrong... but that sounds weird. J.

Graviton ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 5:34 AM

Dash, Does this mean that you will get paid but the artist wont? If you are being paid then you should commission the artist out of your fee, If your not, good luck with your project. Grav

Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?

Okay I was just passing by and poped in.

kromekat ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 7:18 AM

Don't submit anything for nothing people - if your idea is good enough, then you get paid - Dash is - that's what a contract for a TV slot is. if YOU landed the contract, it must be because YOU have something to offer, so get on with it!

After all .. your damn right Kromekat, dash should go on with its own creation skill.. and it's a good way to improve your creation skill level dash!

Dash101 ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 2:40 PM

Grav, Krome, I am totally willing to pay for it.. We aren't geting much though and I would be happy to pay out of my own pocket.. I was just thinking about giving some experience to people who wanted it... Anyways, not a big deal so don't get all angry about it. To some people, Experience is worth more then a bit of cash. But I'll offer cash if you guys want.

derjimi ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 2:46 PM

Experience doesn't get worse when there's an additional payment. ;-) I just thought that it is funny that you sign a contract and get a job and then search people that will do the work for you for free. --- Ok, here's the deal: I am an office employee. If someone needs some experience in office work, he can go to my work instead of me. I will sit at home and spend the money they send me. grin Nevermind, I'm just kidding. Go on as you like. :-) Greets, Jimi

{I am totally willing to pay for it.. We aren't geting much though and I would be happy to pay out of my own pocket.. } Should have mentioned that then huh!? {I was just thinking about giving some experience to people who wanted it... } Awww... That's nice - your first taste of creative rip off folks! :) There are enough people willing and quite able to take yet another naive artist for a ride, don't add to the insult. {To some people, Experience is worth more then a bit of cash.} Experience is golden, it's priceless - but thankfully due to some of OUR experienced insight, we are able to inform the less experienced of a simple fact: if it's good enough to be used, then it's good enough to be paid for properly, and you have a right to ask what you will get and have it in writing before you show anything to anybody. Ideas are priceless, not fee-less. Dash - On one hand I can see what you are trying to offer, and that's nice and admirable, but the overiding sense I got was that you want something for nothing because you haven't conceived an idea yourself. If I was really stuck with a concept problem and I didn't have the time or the skill to deal with it, i'd either turn the job down, pass it on in full to someone else or mention quite clearly that I would pay a proper fee for it. {Anyways, not a big deal so don't get all angry about it. } not being angry at all, just informing the uninformed. :)

Hey guys, I understand where your comming from. The fact is I am being payed $300.00 Canadian to produce the film... ...There isn't any budget on the short film cause this is the first HD production for everyone involved and we're all hoping to get experience in the HD feild. You have a point when you say that people should be paid for their ideas. And I TOTALLY AGREE. I wish I was getting real money myself for it. But for me, I'd like to have a producer credit on an HD film. Thats it.. And I've made alot of friends here on Renderosity and was hoping to share some of that experience because I've worked with people over the net before and it was a blast! But fine.. I didn't realize it would be such a problem. Consider this a mute point. I'll just drop the idea. -dash

derjimi ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 3:34 PM

It is a good idea to make a true HD film. But next time you should tell people from start what you think so that nobody gets it wrong... Don't drop it, please. Greets, Jimi

kromekat ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 3:36 PM

It's a fine idea Dash - just make sure you pay whoever comes up with the idea! :)

Geez... seems like such a silly thing to get all riled up about. I thought it sounded like fun. Silly me, I always thought ART=FUN, not ART=MONEY. shrugs

Graviton ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 5:26 PM

Work = Money. Grav

Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?

tuttle ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 6:59 PM

"Work = Money" Try telling that to my customers, the bunch of tight-arse gits. "Oooh, 60 for a logo, I only want a small one!"... "What? You want extra just because I changed all my requirements after you'd done 99% of the work?"... "How come you don't do web hosting for free; Freeserve do!"..."How petty, you're going to charge me because I ring you 3 times a day every day for hours at a time for advice about everything from setting up e-mail to downloading on Kazaa to the effects of throwing cups of fucking coffee into the fucking monitor !&^"*!!!!!!" Sorry, just posted on epilogue about this and I need to... calm... down... :)

kromekat ( ) posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 9:15 PM

tuttle - I hear you ... I hear you. :] jaymonjay - who's getting riled? - art = whatever you want it to, but ideas for a comercail project = money unless you are: a) already wealthy and can be indulgent for the sport of it or... b) a hobbyist with no knowledge that some people actually do art for a living or... c} no idea how the world works or... d) an idiot. QUOTE from a former incarnation but in the same territory: "Can you paint me a portrait of my dog?" "Of course I can!" "What would you charge?" "150-250" "What???....How much???.....He's not a very big dog, and I only want it to go on my little coffee table" "it makes no difference whether he i a Great Dane or a Toy Poodle!" "That's expensive... I know a guy who paints in watercolours for a hobby, and he quoted me 20!" "Well get him to do it then!" "But your better!" "...!..." "Anyway, I thought you painted because you enjoy it!?" "I do, but you want a portrait of your dog... what makes you think that's any more enjoyable to me than your daily job?.... What do you earn a week?" "...er..." "...!..." And that's just one example. Hey guys, there is no better experience than doing and finding out for yourself, so don't listen to anybody else! :)

LOL, tuttle. The real & less romantic side of being an artist.

Anytime I see something screech across a room and latch onto someone's neck, and the guy screams and tries to get it off, I have to laugh, because what is that thing?

tuttle ( ) posted Fri, 13 June 2003 at 4:39 AM

kromekat - I think you hit the nail on the head; for some reason, people think if you enjoy doing something then you shouldn't get paid for it, and you'll give your time away for free. In my previous job I spent many years working with, and recruiting / managing, IT contractors and staff. The average contract pay was between 40 and 65 per hour, with one as high as 85. Without exception, the skills these guys had could be learned by practically anybody within 18 months. The company, of course, had to make a profit with these guys, so they charged well over 1,000 per day for their time. In other words, customers thought nothing of paying 3,000 - 5,000 for a simple, 3 day job... or 1,000 for a single hour-long meeting with the team... ...but take a different field, like art, where the artist is required to have vastly more talent and experience than an IT worker, and the very same people who'll think nothing of contracting teams at thousands per day will gape in outrage at the idea of an artist asking for 200 for a week's work. It must mean I love art a lot when all this STILL doesn't prevent me from wanting to become a professional artist!!! :)

kromekat ( ) posted Fri, 13 June 2003 at 4:54 AM

tuttle - I hear you again! :) The pont is, you have to rise above the ignorant level (generic joe and joanne public) and don't even entertain selling to them - IThe ad agencies etc don't quibble at K's, and their the people that pay the bills. :)

$300 Canadian dollars! for a three minute animation?? The worker is
worthy of his hire...not an insult. Peter >The fact is I am
