Subject: Poser 4.0.2 Upgrade - Did anyone find it tricky?

Adonis ( ) posted Fri, 16 June 2000 at 9:48 PM · edited Mon, 02 December 2024 at 2:52 PM

Well, I did. And I need your help again, folks. I once tried the automatic update version, only to end up with "...file contents do not match" error. So as Curious Labs directed I tried "non-automatic" upgrade version instead. Now the web site indicated that there should be some sort of instruction within the .zip file, which I haven't been able to find. So I am basically stuck in some where along the seemingly tricky road to Poser 4.0.2. Any comments or suggestions will be appreciated!

The easy install won't work if certain files have been modified.Myself, I made a dupe of the runtime folder, re-installed Poser, did the update, then replaced the new runtime folder with the dupe. No guarantee on this though.

I'm having exactly the same problems. Today Curious Labs said the zip version of the patch needs to be located in the Poser folder in order to install. My patch is sitting in my download file so now I have to copy it over to the Poser folder and then run the exe part of the patch. I'm hoping this will work. I've been at it a week now. Very frustrating. I don't think there are any instructions in the zip version. I don't see a read me file.

If you are using the manual install of the patch, its really easy. It won't install itself. You just replace the files in the proper folders--they will overwrite correctly. There is one thing you need to do--and I can't remember it off hand--LOBO-- (he's the one who told me). There are files that need to be deleted before you replace them in the folder-I believe you need to delete the files in the plugin folder and then replace them--they don't overwrite correctly. There was not a readme with mine either. It will be pretty obvious which files you are to replace--just unzip the folder, put it somewhere and go clear down into it and look at the files--and then copy them into the correct folders within Runtime (one is the asifont, I believe which will go into the Poser folder along with Runtime. However, the others are geometry and library files, I believe. Diane B

Thanks. I hope you stay with us through this. It sounds like it is getting more complicated than I'm comfortable with. I'll be back after I see what I can do.

yepp the manuell install patch is the best way an it will work on german version too. delete bevor install your Plugins floder. (you do not you have al plugins twice an if you use the rong poser hang off)

Lindy, I'll stick around and also Lobo, I hope, is reading this (I'm assuming). If you haven't opened your patch and looked at the files yet, it will seem more confusing--one you look at them, this will make sense (I put off installing the final patch until I got Victoria and realized for her to work correctly I had to install the patch--and it was a cinch to do). However, if you are familiar with Poser and its folders (geometry, libraries, etc), then these will ring a bell with you. I think---- that there is at least one folder that says on the folder title or within what to do with it. The others just mean you have to look for where they are--for instance, if a file is in Runtime/libraries/characters/animals (or some such), just find that folder and look for the file (I think the snake is one of these). Then--copy the file from your new patch folder and paste it into the correct folder. It will say (if you are PC) 'this folder contains a file with this name' (or some message like this)--you will have to choose to overwrite--do it and the correct file is in the correct folder. Thanks Diane. The patch contains a runtime folder (Geometries, Libraries, Plugins, Prefs, scripts) and then Asifont, Asifont.map, Asiport rsr, poser, and poser.rsr. The Poser program file has all these as well. So I see what needs to be replaced. Now, how do I go about getting the patch into the poser program file? Do I delete the corresponding program files and then copy the patch files into their place?? If so how do I do that?

picnic ( ) posted Sat, 17 June 2000 at 2:58 PM

No, you need to copy the fonts into the Poser folder--you'll see where there are already files called that. They will overwrite the old ones. Then--open all the folders--the geometry one first and copy each 'file' and then paste it into the corresponding folder within the geometry folder. I'm not sure what these are now, but think there is one for the snake and maybe the bikini. Do the same with libraries--open your library folder in the patch and go clear down to the FILES. I don't remember what they are--but they will be something like library/character/female clothing/bikini.rsr and cr2 or something or other. When you get to the FILE (the rsr and cr2), copy each of those and paste into the corresponding folder--you are wanting to put these in the same files where you will already find a file with the same name. They will overwrite (they will say that there is already a file with that name in the folder and ask if you want to overwrite. next

So--from each of these folders you need to copy the FILE (NOT the folder) to the appropriate folder--replacing the one that is already in there. You do not want to delete anything except the plugin files from that folder. Lobo tells me that they don't overwrite correctly, so delete those and THEN place the new ones in that folder. All the rest will overwrite correctly. The 'patch' is not anything to 'install' so to speak. It is simply a group of files that need to replace 'bad' ones. So--you just go through one by one and replace each of the corresponding files to the ones in your 'patch' folder with the new ones. Does that make sense?--its just copy and paste--and then a message saying there is already a file in that folder with that name and do you want to replace it?--say yes S. JUST REMEMBER to delete the files in the plugin folder and just paste your new ones into it--you'll get no message because the folder will already be empty. BTW, when I say file, I mean that they will have extensions like .obj, .cr2, .rsr, etc. Oh, and the fonts.

If it will help this is the readme file from the Poser patch I d/l'ed from Larry Weinbergs' site... (http://www.ghosteffects.com) To install, you will need to manually copy each file to it's proper place within your Poser folder. !------------------------------------------------------------! !!! It is important to remove all of your current plugins in RuntimePlugins and make sure that they are located completely outside of the Poser folder (not in any folder underneath Poser) -- or are deleted. If you leave any around, you may wind up with two menu choices for the same import/export choice and one of them will be likely crash the application. !------------------------------------------------------------! To install, copy each file as noted. The files in the update are stored in folders whose names tell you what to do with them. 1) Remove all of your existing plugins in the "Runtimeplugins" folder underneath Poser (as noted above) 2) Backup (or delete) your old Poser4.0.exe executeable file if you wish. 3) Copy all files from the folder called "Put in Poser Folder" to your Poser folder. 4) Open the "Put in Runtime" folder included with this update. 5) In each of the folders located in "Put in Runtime" you will find files or more "Put in..." folders. Open each of these until you find a file that isn't named "Put in..." and copy it to the appropriately suggested folder under your Poser folder. Hopefully you will find them all. For instance, underneath "Put in Runtime" is a folder called "Put in Geometries". Inside that folder is a folder called "Put in maleCasLo". Inside that folder is a file called "maleCasLo.obj". You would then copy this file (maleCasLo.obj) and put it into the runtimegeometriesmaleCasLo folder under your Poser folder. Good luck -- and please don't find any more bugs.

Thanks Cooler. That's a little more succinct than my long winded explanations. Hope it helps Lindy. Diane B

Finally...I got it installed...but...what I ended up doing was to uninstall Poser, then re-install so the "old file" was the same one that the run-time patch version wants to see. Then I installed the runtime version of the patch. It worked easily and automatically....and...I didn't loose any of my victoria stuff which I thought I would have to reload. To make sure I have the patch version running, per Curious Labs, I went into "my computer" to the Poser file and did a right click on the poser.exe, then down to properties and then clicked the version tab and according to Curious, if it shows 4.02 then it has been successfully patched. It did so now I'm back in business, I hope. Thanks to all of you especially picnic/cooler!

That's something I learned early on(relatively)--that I didn't lose anything when I reinstalled. Glad you got it installed. It solved lots of annoying problems for me--and Vicky worked correctly--a big plus. smile Diane
