Subject: Mimic 1 -> Mimic 2 (or, Does DAZ Still Exist?) part question, part rant.

dona_ferentes ( ) posted Sat, 21 June 2003 at 3:41 AM · edited Sun, 02 February 2025 at 4:55 PM

Sorry to keep harping on about this, but this will probably be the last time, as DAZ's 'June 30' deadline is approaching. Several weekends ago, a DAZ rep stated here that until June 30, there'd be a free upgrade to Mimic 2 for those who'd recently purchased Mimic 1, and that emails about this would be going out on the following monday. Did ANYONE ever get such an email? Come to that, has anyone had any reply from DAZ on any subject at all lately? I've sent a couple of emails over the past month or so, and none have been acknowledged, never mind received a reply. Frankly, I'm starting to wonder if their policy was to announce the free upgrade, then lie low until after their deadline - after which they'll send out messages saying 'I'm so sorry, but you're too late...' No, I don't really think that... But I AM angry. I know there've been staff shufflings and causes for celebration at DAZ, but taking more than three weeks to reply to an email (if they ever DO reply) is just plain bad. (out of kindness to readers, I deleted several paragraphs at this point. So here endeth the rant.)

I had a reply from Daz recently it took about a week for it to filter through the system, but it arrived so they are still there with people at the end of the emails. I do vaguely remember seeing somthing about an upgrade from mimic 1 to mimic 2, but I could not be sure if it was free or discounted, Daz are currently offering an upgrade from mimic 1 to mimic 2 'only until 30th June' for $45 which seems a little bit steep. Hope it all works out.

Hi, Gonzo. When Mimic 2 was first released, I was sorely annoyed because I'd just bought Mimic 1. Then I was even more annoyed when I saw that their upgrade price only applied until June 30 - only about a month later. I posted a rant here, and one of the replys was from a DAZ person who clarified the issue, stating that the June 30 date only applied to those who were eligible for a freebie upgrade because they'd bought Mimic 1 so recently. Apparently the June 30 date doesn't apply to those who are paying the upgrade price - you'll still be able to get the paid upgrade from Mimic 1 after that date (though this sure isn't the way it sounds on the DAZ site.) THis news made me very happy, and I've been looking forward to my freebie Mimic 2. But DAZ seem to be ignoring all emails on the subject of the free upgrade. Or perhaps they're just ignoring mine. To be fair, I keep reading glowing reports of how wonderful DAZ customer services are, so I must just be some sort of unlucky exception. The last couple of things I bought from DAZ didn't work and I had to re-download 'fixed' versions, and now this. It's kinda the last straw. I'm coming to think of DAZ the same way I think about Microsoft - they produce some stuff I really can't do without (Millennium figures, for example), but in general they are not A Good Thing. A lot of people are looking forward to DAZ Studio, and it sounds like it will be a great program, but based on my own experiences of DAZ, I hate the thought of them gaining a Microsoft-like grip over us poor Poser-ers. I promise to stop ranting about this now. It's seems pretty clear that I'm not going to get that promised upgrade, so I'm just kinda letting off steam. Rants are tedious to read, so I promise to shut up.

Greetings, I sent a message for assistance to the tech support at DAZ Thursday evening EST USA, and recieved a reply to the issue on Friday afternoon. Less than 24 hours! JAS

I apologize for the confusion concerning this offer. Here's the breakdown for all of you still sitting the fence on the Mimic Upgrade issue: If you purchased Mimic within 45 days before Mimic 2 was released, you may get a FREE upgrade to Mimic 2. I say 45 days, because we accidentally announced Mimic 2 earlier than what we were supposed to, so our usual 30 day price guarantee needed to be extended. If you purchased Mimic 1 - ever - then you are eligible to upgrade to Mimic 2 for $45.47 (plus any discounts you may have). OR you may upgrade from Mimic 1 to Mimic 2 Pro for $111.97 (plus discounts). After June 30th, the ONLY upgrade will be from Mimic 2 to Mimic 2 Pro for $111.97 (plus discounts). After June 30th, any Mimic 1 users will have to pay full price. I apologize for any lack of communication from our tech or sales department, they were quite busy for a while between the release of Mimic 2 and the revamp of our store. Morphy, I would suggest emailing again to sales2daz3d.com or tech@daz3d.com as they are caught up on email last I heard. Any more questions, please email us. Thanks, Steve Kondris DAZ Productions, Inc. DAZ = Microsoft!!?!?!! Not on your life!

I wonder if it might have something to do with your mail servers or something like that. There are just so few people that have ever had any problems getting support from DAZ, especially after a wait as long as you've had. Have you tried the toll free numbers? 1-800-267-5170 1-801-495-1777

Dave-So ( ) posted Sat, 21 June 2003 at 9:33 AM

I got the M2 Pro upgrade, however, I think not allowing users of Mimic 1 a decent upgrade price after June 30th is a bit harsh and not following the usual DAZ great customer service policy.... Its very unusual to have upgrade pricing to a new product cut off like that to existing customers...maybe if Mimic 3 was the one out, Mimic 1 users would have a reduced upgrade deal, but not allowing an upgrade at all is not good IMO. What's up with that decision anyway ????

Thanks for the clarification, Steve. It doesn't make me happy, but at least it's clear, so now I really WILL shut up, though I still think the June 30 deadline for upgrades from Mimic 1 - forcing previous purchasers to upgrade within a matter of weeks or lose the discount - is a bit shameful, but that's just IMO. Thanks for the reply, Momcat - but toll free numbers don't work for those of us on the other side of the Atlantic!

wyrwulf ( ) posted Sat, 21 June 2003 at 9:38 AM

The 1-800 number would be toll free, but the 1-801 number is a toll call, 801 is a Utah prefix.

Marque ( ) posted Sat, 21 June 2003 at 12:40 PM

Have you tried the toll-free number? It's supposed to be international. Marque

Also I just found out that the spam bot with my isp doesn't let all mail out or all mail in and the incoming mail gets deleted. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the thing, I still get spam. I have sent mail to other people, same email three to four times and they may only get two. Daughter is starting to have the same problem, different isp. Might be the reason some of the mail isn't getting to you. Marque

Well, it's not a problem (for me) anymore. I pretty much needed something like Mimic Pro, and nobody else sells such a thing. So I finally thought 'the H3ll with it' and bought Mimic Pro (though with considerable hard feeling. Until recently DAZ was my first port of call if I was looking for a prop or something, but future I won't buy any DAZ product unless there's no acceptable substitute elsewhere.)

spurlock5 ( ) posted Sat, 21 June 2003 at 5:46 PM

I bought Mimic 1 some time ago and did nothing with it. Obviously, when the upgrade came out, I did the logical thing and bought the upgrade to Mimic 2 Pro. Again I keep telling myself that I will do something with it in the future. Is this how you eventually go bankrupt?

quesswho ( ) posted Sat, 21 June 2003 at 7:35 PM

I have Mimic from its beginning with Lipsinc and I upgraded to Mimic2 Pro unfortunatly I have to have Mimic installed for the upgrade to install and my CDRW is dead so I will have to wait to try it out. With being a Plat cliub member the price was to good to refuse. Marge

brandonc ( ) posted Sun, 22 June 2003 at 6:51 AM

What the hell files is mimic 2 upgrade looking for cause i got mimic one from the co. that had it before daz and it gets to searching for req files then just quits ?? should i get a refund>?

quesswho ( ) posted Sun, 22 June 2003 at 11:18 AM

So you got Mimic 1 installed and it keeps looking, must be a problem. I am sure Daz will help us, they have always been really good with customer service, at least with me. Marge

brandonc ( ) posted Mon, 23 June 2003 at 3:14 AM

I sent a email a week ago no reply

dona_ferentes ( ) posted Mon, 23 June 2003 at 4:53 AM

Brandonc, to be fair, it seems that for most people DAZ support is absolutely wonderful, because the overwhelming amount of feedback here keeps saying that. But some of us unlucky souls appear to be falling through the holes. My rant about the niggardly 'one month to make up your mind' Mimic upgrade and the total lack of response to my emails on the subject wasn't an isolated incident for me, but just the straw that broke the camel's back. In the couple of years that I've been buying stuff from DAZ, I've had occasional problems with some products, and in one instance, the customer service I received was outstandingly, amazingly, awesomely brilliant, and better than I've ever had from any other company. In the other couple of cases, it ranged from Ok to abysimal. This is the first time it's been non-existent. Comparing them to Microsoft was a nasty cheap shot, written in anger, and I apologise to any Daz guys who're reading this. In the heat of the moment, it seemed like an apt comparison - My 'reasoning' was as follows: CL have most definitely dropped the ball, DAZ seem set to pick it up and totally dominate the (formerly?) Poser world, whenever DAz Studio appears. If their new 'one-month-to-upgrade-or-you-pay-the-full-price' policy is a foretaste of what's to come, I really don't see their dominance as being in our best interest. CL, at least until recently, had much more respect for previous customers. The other reason for the MS comparison was a sort of backhanded compliment to DAZ. What I mean is, I HATE a lot of things about MS as a company, and the way their software works. But as a PC owner, there just isn't a viable alternative at present. Ditto with DAZ. I'd guess that most of us can't imagine life without Victoria and Michael. If you want a lip-synch program for Poser, you have to choose DAZ. And so on. They sell some essential items that you just can't get anywhere else. Historically, that sort of monopoly isn't ever in the consumer's interest. Anyway, apologies. Even DAZ isn't as bad as Microsoft!!!

Dave-So ( ) posted Mon, 23 June 2003 at 7:42 AM

On DAZ recent customer service---they are a small company.. there was a thread here not long ago that AnneMarie White had a baby, I think it was, and was out of the office...probably a backlog... I sent an email inquiry to sales@daz3d.com and got a reply in 3 or 4 days, whereas it used to be prety much same or next....the email return had AnneMaries title, but was sent by Reba....so they are doing backup coverage there....probably some emails fall through the cracks... I'd try again...

For those of you with MImic from Lipsync, the Mimic2 pro upgrade does work you have to do a search for the Mimic folder inside Poser4 and install it there. Marge (I just put a new CD-RW in)

brandonc ( ) posted Mon, 23 June 2003 at 1:03 PM

i tried that im using poser 5 thou i just noticed that my other items for daz installers that if i let them search it just closes :/

quesswho ( ) posted Mon, 23 June 2003 at 2:23 PM

Now that is weird! Mimic(from lipsync) only worked with Poser4 :(

brandonc ( ) posted Mon, 23 June 2003 at 2:35 PM

wgschick ( ) posted Wed, 25 June 2003 at 3:35 PM

did you get a license for installing on another computer? (evil grin) Mimic 2 Pro upgrades easily and in just minutes on a mac. AND it works great. Nice job DAZ. Now if you could just release more COOL stuff for Platinum Members, I'd be very happy. The gargoyle hounds rock!
