I wanted to find a scorpion model to play around with, I didn't really have anything in mind for an image, but I couldn't find a freebie anywhere I liked. So I decided to make my own in Bryce 5. I started with this photo reference.

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.

About 4 hours later, I had my scorpion. The pincers and stinger are made from metaballs, the rest is spheres. Here is the wireframe.

I realize that it's not perfect, but I like the results. I played with the dimensions a bit to get the look I wanted. When I made the legs in natural proportions, they overwhelmed the pincers and tail, so I downsized them. I also see a flaw now where the first small leg is leaving a gap with the body, but that only shows up in the shadow so to h*ll with it! :^) Here's a plain vanilla render.

Here is a link to a textured version where I tried to emulate the photo's texture with Bryce procedurals. Mine looks a little too much like wood. :^)

If you've been patient enough to wade through all this, I thank you. I post this primarilly to encourage everyone who thinks they can't learn to model in Bryce to try it. Each time you do it, it gets easier. A year ago, if I tried to do this, it would have taken days instead of hours. And the results would probably not have been as good. Where Bryce is concerned, practice is key to improvement. Keep at it!

Great modeling tjohn. I always try to model my own stuff now that I have tried a few things and found Bryce CAN do it. I just need a lot more practice to get as good as this model...:)

Great model man! And yeah, to succeed with a model is very rewarding...and addictive! :)

Cracking model, tjohn. Some scorps, especially the big black ones from Asia have very glossy granular bodies. Might be worth seeing what an asphalt type material with some specularity looks like. The general rule with these things is, the fatter the tail and smaller the pincers, the less you want to play pat a cake with em. (I used to breed these things in my airing cupboard.)

Great job on the modeling tjohn! I think if you tinker with the texture just a little more this will be perfect.

Good job. You have a good eye for detail.

Too cool, Tjohn! I did the same with an ant a while ago, and you're right, trying complex things like this one make you learn a lot. I love both versions. S.

Thanks to all! I look forward to doing more modelling as I'm getting a little stale at image making lately. Glad you liked the scorp. :^)
