Subject: Poser 4 problems with memory

lovestitchn ( ) posted Mon, 07 July 2003 at 7:37 AM · edited Sat, 10 August 2024 at 12:04 AM

I have tried everything to get poser to work right. I just got a custom puter made and it had 1.5 gig of memory. I have had nothing but memory problems with poser and my computer just shutting down and restarting and error messages about not being able to find this or that file to open. so I took out two of the memory boards and it is running great on 512 mgs of ram. Now what? I own two boards I can't use. I wanted to have lots of memory for my graphics work, but it seems it doesn't want it. I have space on my motherboard for 3 gigs total memory. What good is it if I can't use it. I tried Poser's memory updater and it works for squat which mean not at all. Why don't they make this program to work right with larger amounts of memory? Does Poser 5 do this or Propak do this too? Need help. I can't leave 1 gig of ram laying around the house useless ($160.00 worth). Dh will kill me! I would really appreciate some help from all of the experts here. Thanks in advance. BTW, I am new to Poser, do not own the Pro pak either. Hugs Lucy

Which OS are you using? Poser is notoriously unhappy with Windows 98. I have XP with 1 GB of RAM, P4 Pro Pack and no memory problems at all.

The "Out of memory" errors Poser coughs up whenever there's something it can't find has NOTHING to do with memory. It's just Poser's way of saying "Help, I don't know what to do. Good bye, cruel world" :o) With that amount of memory, make SURE you have the update for Poser 4, it is on Curious Labs' homepage. It updates your Poser 4 to 4.03. Oh and... Welcome to your new addiction. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile :o)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA
Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.

I got those 'out of memory' error messages a lot with my old computer, quite often when Poser was looking for a file that was corrupt or in the wrong place. My new machine has more memory and more processor power, and I get the error messages less often- Poser seems to cope better with problems. I now tend to get get blank figures or body-part-less figures, but no error message and corresponding disappearance of the selected figure. Windows XP and Poser 4 (no ProPack) both times, so the extra capacity does /something/, even if that error message isn't entirely accurate. I do have version 4.03 (the updated one), so maybe that's why the extra memory helped. I haven't yet lost the habit of nervously selecting 'save' before adding a new figure to a scene, however! Oh yes, welcome from me too! Poser is an expensive and addictive habit, but at least it's an artistically pleasing and somewhat sociable one. ;)

Thanks for the quick replies. I am running Win XP with SP 1 and have 80 gig hd with MSI NVIDIA G force 4 MX graphics card and a AMD Athlon 2600 processor. I almost think the puter tech guy gave me the wrong two sticks of memory as they don't quite look like the one 512 that is in there now. I have the Poser 4.03 and tried the memory update and it didn't work. LOL I am already addicted to 3 D. Love Bryce as well, guess I'll take a course at LVS to learn Poser too! Thanks so much for the replies. I'll let you know what happens. for now I am using just 512 and all is well. Can't beleive it. Hugs and thanks Lucy Lovestitchn

I have only run into that problem since I bought Sanctum Arts "Legion" character. I thought I didn't have enough memory, but perhaps there is an internal call to a missing file... or both. I'm in a similar mystery right now. It's not a commen problem (for me) and my question for you would be: What character(s) are you using when you get the message? Is it a big load or could it be calling for a missing/corrupted file? deci6el mac 733mhz running ProPack with 800 meg RAM

any character. I mostly use Steph with character additions like Jhana or Melody, or even using Vicki. It can be the P4 woman as well. I do beleive it is the memory sticks as I took them out and am functioning quite well on 512 mg of ram now. But thank you so much for your input. Lucy

I don't think it's your memory sticks. I've been running into the exact same problem you described. I recently got a 2.6 GHz computer (Pentium 4) with 1GB memory and everything was running fine until I started working with large files in Poser 4 (80 to 100 MB in size) and 3-5 characters in one scene. Poser would keep popping up with error messages that I've never seen before even in my older slower machine. Then the textures for characters and props would disappear leave only the models. The windows boxes would appear one after the other and I would have to shut the system down completely and reboot. I also tried the Poser 4 memory update and this is when I first noticed the problem after installing this update. At that time, I uninstalled and reinstalled Poser 4 and the problem seemed to get worse. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled everything and just recently I noticed that the problem has crept back up. I don't have the memory update installed this time. I wonder if it is file related, even though this happens with newly created files.
