Subject: Calling all Mac Poser users

Am I the only one who is disappointed with Curious Labs for keeping us in the dark about the OS-X port of Poser 5..? Their website doesnt really say much, and what it does say is now sadly out of date. I had expected them to release the latest version for us Macphiles around the same time as this years Mac expo, you know something kitschy like P-5 to go with your G-5 but they dropped the ball, and now here I am, not only waiting around with no Poser for my Mac OS-X (Ive been Poser-less for nearly year now since I decided to upgrade all my software to the latest version) but Im starting to thing that its time to abandon ship entirely for obviously, we are not market that Curious Labs cares about keeping up with. !!! POUT !!!

I am fine with a "wait until it is finished" approach since the PC version caused so much of a mess. Not really sure why you have been poserless for a year unless you didn't use it that much to begin with. I wouldn't stop using a program that I used a lot just because a new version isn't out. Course that is also why I don't really use OSX (that and I am still not a big fan) because I don't have much that would run on it.

Well, I use Poser 4 Pro within OSX with no problems. And I've created some really nice images if I do say so myself. Poser 5? Maybe it's not out yet because CL is in financial trouble. Might explain the huge restructuring!

...I also have an old workstation (Besides the supped up Mactop I usually work on) at home that runs OS-9 (Which I hate, the last pre OS-X I liked was OS-8.6, but I digress) and I use that when I have a project that requires poser. Though to be quiet honest, I don't really use it that much since currently my career revolves around my traditional media and 2D digital art skills but I have an interest in 3D modeling and animation so I've been teaching myself slowly but surely the tools of the trade. The first application I used was an old copy of Ray Dream and Poser V1, then Carrara Studio (Prior to its slow response to OS-X) and Poser 4. Now I'm playing with lightwave and getting tips and tricks from a friend of mine who works teaching Lightwave to students at a local art school who is really close to convincing me that Poser is a 3D cheat- I got to tell you, I was once happy to have Poser as part of my toolbox for it made working with the human figure easy and fun, but since I haven't really used it in nearly a year, I'm starting to agree with my friend. That means one less customer now and in future for Curious Labs becuase once I turn my back on a product, I keep going... P.S. Far for me to tell you what is better, though from my experiences, I've had a lot less trouble working with OS-X (Thanks to the Unix shell it's way stable and far more flexible then any OS I've worked with though my experience is limited to win and mac) then I ever did with anything Mac used prior as an OS. You might want to give it a chance.

Well, after all I've read here about the problems had with 5 for PCs I'm not too fussed that it's not out yet - personally I'm still getting to grips with 4 and Pro Pack. However, I've been using OS X since it was launched and quite happily using Poser in Classic mode. Everyone of my other apps is OS X native except for Poser & Mac Converter and they both do perfectly well in Classic . I wouldn't deny myself my Poser fix just because it still only runs in Classic ! ; ) Any way there's still Daz Studio hope ................. and since (hopefully) that will be X native I'll probably go that way when the time comes. Mac users are a captive market for Daz if they go for OS X !

...CL in financial trouble eh... ...Tisk-tisk, and they had such potential too. Anyway, the more interesting tidbit of information I have acquired here is I can get poser 4 to run on my OS-X. Sweet..! I read about it someplace else, on some other post but I didn't believe it for I thought they meant they were running the OS-9 environment which (I hate) caused me a lot of trouble and convinced me to convert all my software over to OS-X (I betcha mac planned it that way all the time, LOL) except Poser which then and now isn't native but, if it will run on OS-X regardless and do so stable enough for me to enjoy working with it still, I might just keep the "old dog" in my virtual toolbox. Cool!!! I can't wait to get home and see if I can make it work now. Though I still say CL dropped the ball big time when it comes to us Mac users, and that was before I realized how close they are to forfeiting the game entirely.

...Might win out even if Poser 5 does arive soon... After all, I've waited this long, why not wait longer to make a complete switch once and for all.

this info is at curiouslabs.com "LATEST NEWS ON POSER 5 MAC! 7/8/03! Poser 5 for OS X is extremely close to being complete. We are in the final stage of testing and hope to announce the release this month! We did expect to GM before the start of July but found it necessary to add more test time with use on the OS X platform. Thank you very much for your patience. The GM will be announced directly on the Curious Labs website under this section, and we will post the announcement on the main community forums for Poser as well."

EEEcho_42 ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 6:14 PM

...Took them long enough. You know, I wrote them and they never responded. I visited their site looking for current info and never got any. It is in my humble opinion a poor way to run a business, or anything (be it community, family, or circle of friends) for that matter because without proper communications with those who believe and support it won't take long for feelings of neglect and betrail to surface. And when that happens, damage control might be out of your control.

stewer ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 6:30 PM

I don't think that I am allowed to tell you what application's beta version I have in my /Applications folder of my OS X drive nor am I allowed to tell you that it's progressing nicely or that it would actually confirm the press release from CL. So I will shut up ;-)

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 6:42 PM

Just seems to be too windows to me and it seems like they changed things for the sake of changing them (names so you can't find stuff etc) .. It just made it so it wasn't familiar anymore to me (working on a mac since 89) and it slows me down. It also doesn't help that I would have to buy a dozen programs to make em work. But Poser 5 is coming and Daz Studio is also and that is for OSX as well.

Jackson ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 6:42 PM

Here's hoping you Mac users have better luck than many of us PC'ers. Maybe they even did it like originally promised to all users: "brand new, built from the ground up." And all the P4 bugs will be gone and the memory handling won't suck. Then maybe they can do the same for the PC version. Here's hoping, anyway.

Corbie ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 7:22 PM

Glad they finally updated the CL website! I was starting to worry P5 for the Mac wasn't coming, especially since I'd heard CL had laid off all but one programmer (don't know if that's true or not, it was something I read on the boards here). Although I certainly appreciate them taking the time to make sure it works instead of rushing it out as I heard they did with the PC version. Of course, I always thought a program crashing left and right in Windoze was the normal behavior of any program...;-) I'll probably still get DAZ Studio as well, though.

One year, one week minus one day after that major anouncement.

Patricia ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 8:05 PM

After daily forum reading for the past year about the PC version of P5, there's no way I'm subjecting my poor brain to that learning curve! Unless DAZ Studio turns out to be less than we're all hoping for, I will never have a great need for P5 (and my fingers are crossed for DAZ). Once I installed OSX Jaguar, P4 began to work like a dream :) Nearly all the crashes and other horrors I'd endured just disappeared...and I'm running it under Classic on an iMac.

Barryw ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 9:36 PM

They better hurry, if you buy a new mac you won't be able to use it anymore. The new macs dont boot os9.

Daio ( ) posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 10:23 PM

You don't need to be able to boot to OS9 to use Poser4. The new Macs will still run the classic enivronment (from within OSX) which is all you need to run Poser 4. A few of the utlility programs (like Thumbnailer) won't run in the classic environment but other than that it's pretty much a non-issue.

I'll second Patricia's comment on Jaguar, it was a godsend for clearing up problems in Classic mode. I can't remember the last time I needed to boot to OS 9, so I'm not too concerned about the new Macs' lack of support for it. All the utilities I've worked with run in Classic no problem, though Thumbnailer's not one I'm familiar with.

After getting a chance to play with a new G5 briefly, I can vouch for the fact that they're far too superior to bother with OS 9. ;)

The new G5s are 64bit, and the newest operational system, Panther, will take advantage of that, though it's coming out in the fall. If Daz studio could optimize/use that extra power... Sweeet Speed!!!!

I was under the impression thet the new macs couldn't do classic either. Jobs is killing support for os9 that way.

BazC ( ) posted Fri, 11 July 2003 at 4:21 PM

No, some Macs will not boot into OS9. They will run classic though, not quite the same thing! - Baz

I was not as much disappointed as put off from posing. Curious Labs really didn't do themselves any favor by shortstaffing their mac programming efforts. They'd have had my personal money a year ago when I was all Poser-gung-ho, but now I've pretty much lost interest in Poser. My office bought my dept C4DXL 8.0 and Maya, and I'm on the fence now as to whether I will get Poser at all. I will probably wait for when/if we get a project in-house that would benefit from it and let my company lump it into dev costs. I got left behind for technical reasons. My G4/800 can boot into OS 9.2 and run poser 4, but I'm sooo an OS X user now and it just isn't practical to reboot my machine every time I want to switch apps or check my mail. Poser 4 also doesn't work right in classic mode, as most of you have notices (fails to launch more than once, painfully slow to render). P5 shipped for the PC the same month I traded by 8500 for a G4. I was wishfully thinking P5 for mac would be out by the time my computer was setup and running OS X nicely, and I was all saved up. But, it didn't come. By Christmas 2002 I had completely lost interest in doing any Poser work, and I went back to coding games and restoring antique sirens and fog horns (what I do when I'm away from work). -Adam

Caly ( ) posted Tue, 22 July 2003 at 7:56 AM

For me Poser 4 works just fine in Classic mode under Jaguar. I haven't booted into OS9 in ages. :)
