3 to 5 grand? As in.... thousand?! If you do that, call me. I've got some swampland in Florida for sale. :)

Sambucus ( ) posted Sat, 12 July 2003 at 3:54 PM

3 to 5 grand for a motherboard? Thats some mother. Lets hope they can breath some life into the old girl.

MadDog31 ( ) posted Sat, 12 July 2003 at 4:03 PM

Sorry to hear that Eyecon. :( Wish I could help a good friend out but I'm making the most of my bad money situation as it is. And sometimes I wonder what's worse...having a working computer with no artistic ideas whatsoever, or not having a computer whatsoever and having artistic ideas? Ugh...I'll leave myself on this cloudy Wilmington afternoon to ponder that pointless thought. :( Hope to hear from you soon dude. MD

EYECON ( ) posted Sat, 12 July 2003 at 4:03 PM

yeah 3 to 5 grand.. thats how expensive computers here are in my place... thankfully its not in dollars (or american dollars) its in Philippine Peso which is $1.00=50 pesos... so if that where in dollars it would be mmmmmm an hundred dollars... sorry for the "grand" thingee... im just soooooo frustrated i dont know what im posting... oh just to let you guys know, computers here cost at about 40 thousand pesos, roughly 800 dollars... a big paint in the neck thats why im so damn sad!

AgentSmith ( ) posted Sat, 12 July 2003 at 4:22 PM

Have you tried changing the bios by manually to get it back up and breathing? AS

Eric, I can empathize, Eric; my computer crashed about two months back (and I never could figure out why). But, take heart--if it is the bios or motherboard, at least you may be able to save what is on your drive, so you shouldn't lose all your work. I hope it all comes out OK.

ocddoug ( ) posted Sat, 12 July 2003 at 4:58 PM

I feel your pain....I recently had to reformat my comp, which didn't go so well lol and I was without Bryce for about 3 or 4 days. It sucked! It happens to us all, I think.

RodsArt ( ) posted Sat, 12 July 2003 at 5:02 PM

Sure it's just not the Bios battery?

Man, computers suck. They love you up, just to hurt you :(

Vile ( ) posted Sat, 12 July 2003 at 10:35 PM

Get this EyEcon. I was 35% 2 days worth completed in doing the render for the contest (not that I will be picked) but just in case I know it will take awhile to render. Well our power went out today cause of the heat, I was doing a render to disk... All gone bye bye...

Sambucus ( ) posted Sun, 13 July 2003 at 1:01 AM

Its a relief to hear you werent talking US dollars, Eyecon. Still a lot of money though. So what sort of computer would you get for $800 US over there? Mines nothing special compared to the latest setups and cost the equivalent of about $2000 here in the UK.

Trouble is some bios batteries are welded to the mother board so its impossible to change them....70 for a mother board? Sounds good to me.... BTW...How are you talking to us on the Rend? You have 2 computers...? Sorry you're having this trouble. My powerpack blew 2 years ago and took out the hdd. I'm still recovering.

Sorry to hear about your comp. Maybe some of this may help. I will have to assume you are using a windows computer as they are the only kind I deal with. When you are presented with the error message are there any beeps to accompany it? Have you tried to insert a boot disk in the A: drive to try and boot from that? If you can do that then the damage may not be as bad as feared. BIOS rom failiure may be caused by several things. I would advise you to check all your cables and pins on the connections to your drives and reseat them all. ALso pressaing trying to reseat the BIOS chip may help. Consult your motherboard manual on where to find this chip is you are uncertain. On a more drastic note it may be possible to actually replace the bios chip with another of the same type but this can be tricky and you would have to locate an exact BIOS chip to replace it with. Your local repair shop could do this for you if they have an appropriate replacement, but don't hold your breath. Also try and replace the CMOS battery on the Mboard just to cover all your options. Of course all this may seem like too much arsing about and I wouldn't blame you is you just ripped the damned thing out, grabbed the cheque book and got a new one! I will end by adding that BIOS rom troubles invariably end poorly, reducing you to tears, madness, bad breath, irritable manner(unless like that to begin with) and finally constipated due to too many hours wedged in front of blank screen. :)

To answer the queries of my the people who actually felt my pain... AS and ICM: well i did change the battery... cost at about $1.50 so thats expensive here too... didn't work Sambucus : Well $800.00 is just a plain simple setup. pentuim 4 2.4 gighrz, 256 ram, 64 vid card. built-in sound card. cd rom with dvd writer, 17" monitor, balck casing (yeah they include that too) and at some stores, thats with a free printer.. not bad if you just started at your first comp right? Bryster: Well i really dont have an internet connection at home... DSL is very expensive at $100 a month so thats about 5000 here... thats already somebody's payroll for the month! so i just use the Net connection of my office... my boss doesn't mind...HAHA! Firewall: Tnx for the support, i took the liberty of bringing my dead computer to a repair shop... since i was afraid that i could do more damage to it... it'll probably be up and about by wend. hopefully and he said it wond cost that much. in dollars the reapirs would be $10.00 and even in our standards that very cheap... so for now i see a little light at the end of this dark tunnel... hopefully it will turn out well. Vile occdoug: my sentiments too... dont you just hate those machines? you luv em, them stab you at the back! you know what my trouble actually started when i changed my os from win 98 to win xp.... dang! maybe i'll change it back to 98... that way everything will turn out fine. thnx for all your support again! i appreciate all of it!

Might be a consideration to get a UPS (Uninterruptable Poser Supply)..when the power fails, it wails like a Banshee, and you get 10 minutes to save, shut down, and wait for the power to come back. They're not cheap (I think they start at about US$150 for a small unit, but you want one with a battery), it could save you some time and grief. I'm paying about $100 for motherboards here in the States, so that sounds about normal. I don't know if your bios chip is detachable, or surface-mounted (which means you can't do jack with it..), but most BIOS batteries are good for about 2-3 years. And do what I do, if you can...get a CD burner and make backups of all your data (the programs can be reloaded..but the web sites for Bryce and Poser sometimes have the half-life of some of the short-lived radioactive elements), and you can always get them back. Good luck.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Hi there EYECON sorry to hear that. Nagbabrown out pa rin ba diyan sa atin? Sometimes nakakasira yan especially sa computers. Also ang kuryente sa atin medyo maraming fluctuations. To add to that, the humidity and heat. Ahhhh! I hope you get it fixed. I know how that feels, It happened to my PC a couple of times and I felt like... WOW! I have so much empty time. hahaha. Hang in there and hope your PC comes back to life!
