Subject: Another lighting question!

SothArtist ( ) posted Sun, 13 July 2003 at 2:13 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 1:07 AM

I made 6 spotlights around a cube and saved the lights. But the lights don't even register, when rendering, that they have 'Cast shadows' on. They all have cast shadows turn on but when i render the scene it just goes straight into a render. This may have something to do with the prob I had earlier of the distance settings not going passed 1 (which Nance kindly helped me out with) Any ideas? :) Thanks all!

Welp.. I don't know. I have reinstalled poser and pro pack 3 times and its still the same. I am really beginning to think poser is simply not worth the dollars. I can't wait for Daz Studio :)

Do you have "cast shadows" turned on in your render options? Hit ctrl-y and look under "surface detail." That's for p4, BTW.

Hey Jackson :) Yes. I have cast shadows on in render options and on each individual light. If i create new lights it works fine. Its only when I save the lights to a lights folder and then load them into a scene that it stops working. Hopefully will find what the prob is though :)

Make sure the lights' ShadowCams are still associated. (should have the same number of shadowcams, with similar names, as lights) Sometimes saving & reloading a parented light set causes the ShadowCams to get deleted. No shadowcams - no shadows.

Struck the nail right on the head again Nance :) No shadow cams. It must be the saving because any time I save a set of lights and reload them the shadow cam is gone. Even if they are not parented. I have downloaded the latest Service release and propack.. I just don't know.

Hmmm.... Well that's just not typical. Are you saying that if you: -create a group of NEW lights, (with shadowcams), -then save that set to the library, unparented -when you recall the set, the shadowcams are simply gone? I'm wondering if you have confirmed that lights you are working with actually had shadowcams before the save?

Hey again Nance :) Thats exactly what i am saying :) Yes I have confirmed that. If I create a new light set and and render it before i save it, the shadow cams are there. If I then reload the lights into a scene the shadow cams are just gone. Heres a copy of a test light I made if you or anyone else are interested hehe I really do apreciate the time you have taken with me too! Wonderful :)

oh no.. New developement. It is when I use the subset button to select the lights that it does not save the shadow cams. If I dont use the subset button at all.. it saves the lights and their shadow cams. Please tell me using the subset button is right else I am going to feel like a complete and utter Punce!

Nance ( ) posted Mon, 14 July 2003 at 1:04 AM

Of course, the Subset button is for... uh... well... uhm ....seems I never actually tried that sucker myself. [Nance smacks himself on the forehead for a bad case of button blindness and wanders off mumbling, wondering what else he's missed]

Same results here using Subset.

Went a little farther trying to see if using identical internal names would cause the saved set to reclaim the shadowcams of existing lights. Ended up with a monster of mismatched light types and names that appeared to have reclaimed shadowcams but still would not cast shadows.

My head hurts.

lol Nance. Well it says in the manual to use the subset button but doesn't say anything about the shadow cams. Still now I know just to not use the subset button hehe. Again Thanks for everything! Hopefully one day I will be able to help you hehe. Have been making a lot of use of your shadow cam suggestion in regards to make shadows closer to the base of things :)
