Subject: Should I get V2 and V3?

tpriest ( ) posted Mon, 14 July 2003 at 5:59 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 12:46 AM

Okay, I've been playing with P5 for a couple of months and I think I have put it off as long as I can. Getting ready to take my credit card and go visit Daz... Here's my question. (At least I think I understand this enough to ask the right question.) It looks like I need to get the head and body morph packs to go with the V3 base and V3 comes with the V2 body also. So, is there a use for having the full version of Vicky2 since it has morphs included? It seems I read a thread a while back (not even sure if it was here at Rosity or not) about V3 being such a drain on computer resources and V2 being so popular that some people were sticking with V2 for most of their projects. Thanks, Terry

no- V2 is another thing altogether. and yes- unless you have a fairly powerfull machine V3 will be a pain.

DO NOT GET V3!! For months I have been trying to get that damn figure to work. Any time I make a character and save it as Cr2 or Pz3 it will ask for a Victoria 3.jpg when trying to load it and if you try to ignore the file the figure will load completeley white. The texures are there but you have to go to the material room and click on every material to get the tex to show up. I've posted several times about this no one has an answer and correct reference doesn't fix it. Reinstalling P5 and V3 doesnt fix it either. Even if you don't have this problem I still like V2 better, she MUCH MUCH easier to work with and has more attractive facial features imo. V3 is a little more versatile but not enough to make up for the frustration it causes.

For single portraits and posing V3 is quite doable, however, she does slow P5 down alot-- lots of box posing once the textures add up. All the same I'm not sorry I have her, she's a lot of fun and spurs creativity-- but I do tend to stick with Vicki 2 and Steff and Mike whenever doing scenes of more than one character. In the same way, I'm both looking forward to and dreading the arrival of Mike 3. Emily

I like v2 hate v3 lol. V3 is too complicated for my tastes.

i love v3. her morphs are awesome. she's a very good mesh.

Thanks for the input guys. What got me thinking about this was when I bought Mimic while it was on sale. It comes with what I think is Vic 1. It seems like I was instantly able to create more varied characters than I had been with the P5 characters. BTW, I'm running WinXP Pro, 1.9 ghz, 512 ram. I also want to do some animation (mostly MS agent stuff) and I for that I don't need extreme closeups or detail. Aggelos - don't laugh. I'm still trying to get the hang of where the POSER files go, I can't imagine what I would do with a INJ or REM file! Terry

Kaylic, It sounds like maybe you got a corrupt installer for V3, or one that was a beta or something by mistake. Have you talked to DAZ about this? Perhaps they can send you a new file. I think the reason no one here has been able to help you (I remember you bringing this up before)is because we just don't know what could be causing it. I have been running V3 on P5 since the day I got her with absolutely no problems, and there is no such file as Victoria3.jpg in the DAZ installation that I bought. The cr2 does not call for it. I searched the cr2 file myself.

tpriest, I haven't touched V2 since I purchased V3, and I don't miss her much at all. It really depends on what your needs are. If you want superior realism, posing, morphing, the whole deal, V3 can't be beat...yet. If you don't need so much firepower, V2 is still an excellent figure. You really can't go wrong with either one, depending on your needs.

V3 is great if you have the machine to push it. As for V2, I don't have that. V lo res came with almost all the same morphs as V2 and the head is the same high res head as V2. the body isn't high res, but unless you plan on zooming in to body parts, its just extra polygons. By the way, on the upgrade to Mimic2 pro I got another copy of V lo res with the package as a bonus. So, hmm, buy V3 and mimic 2 pro?

Since V3 arrived my V2 hasn't been touched. V3 can be lighter than V2 if you don't load all of her morphs in. :)

That doesn't affect render speed, only ram overhead when posing and stuff. V 3 will still make P5 grind like crazy due to her mega poly count. (Dina V is even worse tho) I like V3 a lot and if ya plan to do mostly stills I say go for it. (and get a poserworld subscription while your at it.) After doing some animation experiments with V3 though I'm afraid I'm gonna have to go back to V2, steph, and M2 for performance reasons, and because I don't need uber detail. Maybe I'll use V3 as a body double if I need a closeup nude scene. :D

Just as an example, both these characters are V3. This is something neither V2 or M2 could do very well.

Well they are bth really cheap, epecially if you have a Paltinum Mebership which would give you an instant library of stuff dirt cheap. I would get both. Kaylic, There is no Victoria 3.jpg from Daz. The file you have has someone elses texture loaded in the cr2 which you mentioned before was your own custom V3 cr2. You moved or deleted the texture "Victoria 3.jpg" you loaded onto the cr2.

Kaylic, Try this: Make up a blank image in your graphics program and save it as Victoria3.jpg. When you load V3, and it asks for that texture, browse for the file and load it. Once you have her loaded, you can then reapply the default material settings (Pose/!Victoria 3 MATS, I believe), and resave her to the library.

Kaylic ( ) posted Tue, 15 July 2003 at 12:23 AM

I know there is no Victoria 3.jpg thats why it is so wierd. It isn't from somoene elses texture and none om my characters have ever had a texure of that name. Ive tried everything. I load a default v3 with no textures, i dont even use an all white mat.. I changed every mat to white myself and add textures to every mat separately(no apply to all). This is with any character i make with any tex. I even reinstalled both p5 and v3 and didnt use any characters i had made recently. I also tried using the v3 installer that my friend had and got the same thing. I know how to properly apply mats... ive been using poser since p3 and have never had anything like this happen. I actually like v2 better anyways but it just irritates me that I spent all the money for something that is useless to me... oh and i did email daz and they never replied.

I have both v2 and v3 but never use 2 anymore. V3, IMO, is much easier to use once you understand the new way of handling morphs. With v2, it's simple--ALL morphs are there when you load her (including about 5,478 that you'll never use). This puts unnecessary strain on Poser and you, as you have to constantly scroll through all those dials. With v3 you only inject the morphs you need--and then can remove them when you no longer need them. IMO, this makes her much easier on the system and much easier to use. The v2 cr2 file is 21+ megabytes. I have a v3 that I use all the time, it's cr2 is 6+ megabytes. And with v3 you get the bonus of a complete male character if you need one.

aggelos ( ) posted Tue, 15 July 2003 at 12:53 PM

tpriest I wouldnt laugh at you, as thats the problem I have had among others too. When trying to use v3. I just gave up on it and went back to v2.

tpriest ( ) posted Tue, 15 July 2003 at 9:22 PM

Thanks again for all the input folks. It sounds like there's not really a bad choice. I'll probably end up with all of 'em anyway!

lgrant ( ) posted Wed, 16 July 2003 at 3:58 PM

When V3 first came out, there were almost no clothes available for her, which made things difficult. (The same problem I've had with all the non-DAZ figures I've picked up over the years.) Now it seems like everyone's making V3 clothes, even some of my favorites, like BATLAB and Billy-T. While my first choice now is always V3, there are still some really cool clothes that are available only for V2, so I still use her from time to time. (If you get DAZ's Universal Texture Converter, you can convert the V3 skins for use with V2, the V2 character can have the same skin as V3.) lynn
