Been working on this for a couple of days. Still have some more things to add, seagulls, maybe some sailors on the boat. Then I need to sort out some of the textures and mess with the lighting. Quite pleased with it so far. I think there may be a second pic in this if I crop and render just the dock area where the horses and little poser bods are.

Wow--beautifully done! The sky is fantastic. The only thing I'd pick on is the bump on the water--looks a bit too "regular" or grid like. Nice job.

Slakker ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 11:09 AM

Yeah, the bump on the water looks way too close together, maybe scale down the texture or something. Looks awesome.

Jaymonjay ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 11:19 AM

Stunning image! Maybe add some furled sails to the ship? Look forward to seeing more of this.

derjimi ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 11:29 AM

Oh my gosh... this is still WIP???!!!??? Breathtaking, especially all the details and the texture work. J.

A couple of days ! Great scene, can't wait to see the final version and hopefully a larger version in your gallery.

hmm.. what to say... other then WOW, nothing seems to come to mind

Aldaron ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 1:12 PM

Beautiful! And people say Bryce can't do these kinds of renders, Bah! The water looks fine. This is what you'd get with a gentle constant breeze, leave it alone.

woodhurst ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 1:20 PM

thats an amzing image--awesome work being done here!

Ang25 ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 1:25 PM

You guys all think this is Bryce, Man this is incredible, I keep looking at it and it seems like a painting out of a museum! I keep thinking if I scroll down I'll see the Bryce version of it. Its so Beautiful! I want to hang it on my wall. Sam you've outdone yourself on this one, its so good. I may need to see the wireframe to be convinced this is Bryce. Ok, if my jaw hangs open any longer flies are gonna get in my mouth. Angela

I wasn't sure what to expect when I clicked on the thread but I am pleasantly surprised. Wonderful image!

danamo ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 1:55 PM

Beautiful- realistic, yet "painterly" at the same time! Oddly enough, I went down to Ilwaco harbor, this weekend and saw just such a wave pattern and thought to myself at the time that it looked like a tiling bitmap because it was so symetrical! Odd,huh?

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 2:01 PM

When I opened this thread I had hopes of seeing another masterpiece from you Sambucus and I'm so pleased that that's what I found. Everything Ang said I agree with, it is truely a beautiful work of art. I think I may have to add you to my favourite artist list you know. 8) Catlin

Sambucus ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 2:31 PM

Thanks for all the encouragment. Im not sure how much more I can do on this as its slowed my PC to a crawl and I havent added one light yet. I was going to darken it down a bit and have lights between the houses but I think my cpu may melt first. Any hints for keeping a biggish pic managable while I work on it? I like the idea of furled sails. Back to the meatblls I suppose. I purposefully chose this wave set to add to the calm feeling of evening I was aiming for. I think Ill stick with it.

Sambucus, this is an excellent WIP, very artistic and well done. I agree, I too have seen ripples on the water in coves during gentle, breezy evenings that look just like this. I would keep it as is. Great work!

Jeez! I hope this isn't a challenge entry......I'm struggling as it is..... The waves....you could try rotating the .mat about 90 degrees and have them goind from left to right, which would fit in with the direction of the sea....0.0p The Bryster

A masterpiece.

A wonderful image, Sam. No much more to say, other than I can't wait to see a larger version in your gallery. Beautiful.

Doublecrash ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 8:51 PM

An afterthought: seeing this image, I'd say: Go Big! Lots of details there, I don't want to lose any of them.

MuddyGrub ( ) posted Sun, 27 July 2003 at 11:17 PM

Beautiful beautiful work. NO LIGHTS? No way. Details sam, we want details! Something this good always makes me want to ask 1000 questions. Great job!

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2003 at 7:11 AM

Excellent. a true masterpiece. I think the ship doesn't need any sailors on it. It would look much more peacefull without them. I agree about the water. It's to repetitive. I don't know if scaling down will make it look much better, maybe adding some variation to the bumpmap in the DTE and a slightly lower bump-setting would help more. There's something about a few parts of the models that doesn't seem right. The chimneys and some of the roofs look like they are oversmoothed. If the houses are imported meshes you should try setting the smoothing lower then 90 degrees (preferably 89 degrees). It's very subtle, but being a perfectionist I noticed it immediately.

A couple of days! If I loaded all the objects as models from a disk it would still take me weeks to get this far. Great work!

lsstrout ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2003 at 3:46 PM

Really gorgeous. If you decide to make it darker (ie, later in the evening), might I suggest you add a star in postwork and title it 'A Tall Ship and a Star to Steer Her By'. Lin

And I went and called it "Evening tide". Dammit Lyn, if only you`d said that earlier, LOL. Great title.

lsstrout ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 11:47 AM

I'll work on my timing! ;) But now you can do a ship at full sail with an evening star and use that title. Lin
