stewer drew my attention to the probelight node in poser5's materials room not too long ago.

I didn't add any lights to this pic, not even the standard 3 that poser likes to load.

There's no shadows but it still looks pretty good & it renders a whole lot faster without the lights :)

thanks for the tip about the Probelight stewer :)

Wow that's nice, I'll have to try that later tonight! Anything to decrease render times :-S

forgot to say it increases the setup time, having to connect the texture to the probe node for each part it's worth it tho. That's the Marco texture by gildedgecko, a really nice texture as well :)

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 31 July 2003 at 2:37 PM

The cool thing is that now you only need one light for the shadows (in this case, plug the probelight into the diffuse color instead of alternate_diffuse) instead of half a dozen of lights to have everything lit correctly.

c1rcle ( ) posted Thu, 31 July 2003 at 2:43 PM

right I'm off to try that now as well, thanks again stewer :)

Puntomaus ( ) posted Thu, 31 July 2003 at 4:48 PM

Ok, I tried and been a bit lost with all the L plugin thingies of the ProbeLight node (or is it a shader? verzeifelt guck). Where does the ProbeLight node go - into the diffuse or alternate diffuse node? And to which L thingies do I connect the texture and what about Exposure and Saturation ? I tried with LaRoo and it looks pretty cool although I am not sure if I've connected everything right.

Sorry to sound very dumb on this one, but I couldn't find the original thread about this probe light. Could someone point me to a thread or tutorial that would explain what is this probelight that give such amazing results, and a start point on how to use it ? Thanks very much in advance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Compiler

here's the original thread it was first mentioned in, with a link to the page that explains the idea behind the probelight kindly supplied by stewer. I don't think I've seen any tutorials on how to use the node in poser tho, only what stewer has posted in reply on these 2 threads.

Uh. I had had a look at this thread but could not understand the first part of it. OK, I'll stick my head in it very hard and try to understand it. It would be a great help if someone who understands this and made the great pictures shown in these threads would give us a screenshot of the material node used for these pics. Thanks a lot in advance. Compiler

You won't see much on those screenshots - the most important parameters of the probelight node are only visible while editing them. Anyway, the probelight is probably only for those who are into tinkering and experimenting. If you're into it, you can take the source code that is provided at the link, compile it and use the resulting program to calculate the vector values for light probe files you can get at various places.

Puntomaus ( ) posted Sat, 02 August 2003 at 8:08 AM

Mist, link vergessen...

Puntomaus ( ) posted Sat, 02 August 2003 at 2:12 PM

anyone can help me with probelight node i new in poser 5. How can i use probelight node ? can explain step by step ?? where i can place probelight node ?? in light object ?? please explain to me

Puntomaus ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 3:07 AM

Create a probelight node (New node - lighting - Diffuse - Probelight). Now you unplug the texture map from the Diffuse color and plug it into the colorfield of the ProbeLight. The Probelight has to be connected to the Alternate_Diffuse. Set Diffuse_Color value to 0. In the ProbeLight Node set the Saturation Value to 0 and play with the Exposure value until the texture looks the way you like. You have to do that with every part of the texturemap and with every texture map you use in your scene. Delete all the lights in your Poserscene and render with the Firefly.
