Subject: Can't render with texturemaps higher as 2500x2500 suggestions?

Sprinter ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 7:45 AM · edited Wed, 05 February 2025 at 5:08 PM

Anyone has had the same problem and got it worked out? Whenever i use a texture that is bigger as 2500x2500 poser won't start rendering it. Also with scenes with several figures in image i can only render 2 or 3 times sometimes only 1 time depending how much is in image. Then i have to reboot to be able to render again. If anyone knows a solution for this that would be awesome welcome. Here is my system info: AMD 1800+ mhz 512MB Memory Operating system Windows 98 Second edition Thank you, Sprinter

It's a memory issue, really.... RAM isn't the only decisive factor, as your Windows Virtual Memory is used when RAM isn't enough (aka your Windows Swap file) It helps to get yourself a RAM-cleaning application (the better ones will clean your virtual memory, too) I've used so many different ones though that I can't really recommend any specific one.

Sprinter ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 7:52 AM

You don't know of any that would be good or best of the ones you tried? I don't know any :( Anyway thanks for the explination. Sprinter

DraX ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 7:56 AM

Hmmm, Cyberlat RAM Cleaner works well, so does MemTurbo... there were qite a few others... check http://download.com.com and search in windows for RAM

Sprinter ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 8:03 AM

Ok thanks will try if that can solve my problem. The wierd thing is on my 350mhz same windows 128Mb memory i don't have the problem :( PC's are strange things :( Sprinter

smiller1 ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 9:01 AM

Does your other machine have a larger swap file?

dolfijntjes ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 9:01 AM

Had the same problem on my AMD computer the memory is open and you have to have a good cooler on that. Now on my new machine a pentium and 1024 memory no problems at all. Mostly the memory is not enough I used a ramcleaner also on my old mnachine it helped a bit that's thrue

Sprinter ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 9:16 AM

I let windows handle the size of it. I must say that i get on both HD about 5 to 10 time more room. So it should be enough. Angel don't make me think its AMD :S i knew when i bought it that i would run into troubles with it but most people told me they did'nt have probs with it. My next PC will be back a intel no doubt. I will test the bigger textures later today i downloaded MemTurbo to try it out. Anyone else think it can be the AMD? the 350mhz is a Intel? Thanks everyone for your inputs and help i apreciate this alot. Sprinter

dolfijntjes ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 9:22 AM

LOL sorry sprinter but you know i had a AMD XP2000 with 512 mb and now a intel 2,66 GHZ and 1024 mb ram and it's so much better a image that rendered one hour before does it know in about 5 to 10 minutes. I love my hubby's boss for this new computer :)

DraX ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 9:29 AM

AMD is the best solution for a gaming machine, whereas for a graphics machine, I've found you're best off with an Intel processor.... Not sure what it is about the differences in the chipsets, but that's been my experience.

DarkElegance ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 9:47 AM

I cant render anything that is remotely high res. it just wont go and I have memturbo now as well. I would love to be able to indulge in some of the beautiful highres packages but just cant.

Sprinter ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 9:59 AM

Me to would love to use the high detailed textures now i allways have to lower them in size :( pretty sad. I just tried and it don't help with MemTurbo although i do think it helps me out to do more renders so i'm halfway. Now a new PC will cost me lots more :( But i guess i have no choice then buying back a intell as soon as i can. And me that thought AMD would have been made better after several years prove me wrong. Anyway thanks everyone for your imputs. Sprinter

Fredy ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 10:27 AM

Sprinter, I had the same problems with an Athlon 1200, 512MB, Win98 first edition and Poser4Pro with latest patches. After I changed to Windows XP those problems were gone! Fredy

dolfijntjes ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 10:30 AM

I had XP but diddn't solve the problem

Fredy ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 10:42 AM

Ok, just checked my config... I forgot one thing, I also added an additional 512 mb swapfile on the partition where Poser was stored. Did you tried this dolfijntjes?

dolfijntjes ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 10:48 AM

No diddn't try that but I don't have to anymore I got my pentium in my country there are projects that allow you to buy a computer from your work.

pizazz ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 5:39 PM

I used to have this ALL THE TIME. As soon as I got rid of Win98 it stopped. Got XP now and no problems at all.

Sprinter ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 7:56 PM

Would love to go to XP but i don't like its Windows Explorer :( In Windows 98 Sec edition i have a preview of images on the side bar what i use allways. Maybe i do have to take it in consideration. If someone has the problem in XP i deffendly like to know before i make up my mind on what i should do. Thanks for posting pizazz :) Sprinter

Spit ( ) posted Tue, 05 August 2003 at 10:42 PM

Explorer in XP gives you a preview of images on the side bar too, if you're in detail view. If you go into thumbnail view you don't need it. ;-) Thumbnail view in Explorer XP is killer. You can even get thumbnail view in open and save dialogs. Can't beat that.

smiller1 ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 2:30 AM

Sprinter- you can set Windows XP to classic mode which looks and feels like Windows 98 instead of the default 'Teletubbies' look.

Sprinter ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 4:13 AM

Spit i real hate thumbnail view cause it takes up to much room :) But you say it give preview on the side to is there a setting for then? Now i'm getting more interested to go to XP. Sprinter

This is details view. You get info about the file too.

Here is thumbnail view. I love it and use this all the time. Every couple of months tell Explorer not to cache thumbnails, then use search to find all Thumbs.db and delete 'em. Then turn the caching back on. I couldn't work without it now.

And one more. If you select 'Folders' you can get the heirarchy on the left for drag and drop if you only want one explorer window open at a time.

I think Explorer is one of the best things about XP.

And being able to switch the view to thumbnails in Save and Open dialogs is unbelievably helpful.

Spit ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 9:22 AM

Oh, if you tell Explorer you want views remembered, it will automatically switch to the view you want when you go to a folder. Some you may want to always view in details mode, others always in thumbnail view, it will be automatic.

Thanks spit those Thumbs.db they get pretty big to no? Here is a sample of how i have it in 98 second edition and i'm used to it for verry long time thats why i would like to have and keep it that way. Have no lust to get lost :) But i asume i can't have this exactly same in XP? Thanks again for taking time to make the samples, Sprinter

Spit ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 9:53 AM

No, not exactly that I'm afraid. I'd rather see all the pictures together so I can compare though. Thumbs.db size depends only on how many pictures in a directory. Let's see...a directory with 172 pictures has thumbs.db that's about 1 meg. But it's easy periodically to turn caching off, search and delete 'em all, then turn caching back on. Explorer only makes the file if you view the directory. And if you can see the pictures it's easier to find duplicate files.

Sprinter ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 10:01 AM

Won't have dublicates :) Pretty good organized. The thumbs.db i don't realy like. Its allover and it easyaly gets included in products etc :( Have purchased a few with them in it. If i set it as in sample 1 but then list showing will it stilll make the thumbs.db files? If yes what about turning it off what result will that bring me? Thanks, Sprinter

Spit ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 10:22 AM

Well, you can tell Explorer not to cache the thumbnails at all. Then it won't make the Thumbs.db files but you still see the pictures. A little slower that way but it works.

I love these questions: "I have a 50G hard drive and 2G of RAM and an AMD X5667 2G processor. It's a high-end system. What's wrong? And, by the way, I'm using Windows 98. So, tell me, why can't I render with high res maps and models on my computer that has a 8 year old operating system?" Geez, I thought we had been through this issue already. Upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP. Listen up people- Windows 98 and Poser do not like each other. Every time you render, Windows 98 does NOT release memory back. So, after a few renders, Poser locks up. Just upgrade. NOW. Spend the $99 to get Windows 2000 and be done with it. No more lock up, no more freezes, no more "which RAM booster should I jury-rig to temporarily make Windows 98 work". Don't spend your money on the latest DAZ goody, instead use the money to upgrade your operating system. And Sprinter, you need to turn on "Show File Extentions" (in Explorer, go to Tools, then Folder Options, then View tab). You are just asking for a virus to hit: sometime soon, you'll get a file that looks like "Vickytexture.jpg.vbs". Because the "vbs" file is hidden on your system, you'll double-click the file (thinking it's a jpg) and run the script.

Sprinter ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 12:44 PM

JohnRender thanks for the tip done that :) Also running a Antivur for safety. Windows 2000 is deffendly nothing for me Windows XP i plan to give a try will need to get a new HD first so i can install there and see if i'm happy with it. But all toghether i might be better off to wait till i can get a complete new system might save a little to that way. Thanks for all the help and is much apreciated. Sprinter

If you want to get at some of the hidden options for XP explorer, download TweakUI from the Windows Power Toys page. Above image shows (ridiculously large) thumbnail size of 250 pixels, and you can adjust the quality setting as well. -- Mark
