Now where's the G5? Poser 5 for OS X is out, see the Curious Labs homepage.

xvcoffee ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 3:40 AM

Juuuuust out of my systems reach (400MHz)but it IS a G4. What about dual-platform?

dbutenhof ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 6:08 AM

Yeah... but only "electronic delivery". Even with cable Internet, an 800Mb download (install + content "CD") is a bit on the heavy side!

Maybe I'll wait for the box...

xvcoffee ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 6:26 AM

Then won't we have to download the service release?

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 6:28 AM

"The OSX version contains all updates found in SR3 for Win."

BazC ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 6:36 AM

I wouldn't touch it till there's a demo available, it's a good introductory price though! Now all we want is Daz Studio, things are looking up! - Baz

xvcoffee ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 7:08 AM

still a big download

MarianneR ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 7:40 AM

The European store only has the Windows version so far.

JohnRender ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 8:06 AM

Okay, not yet, but if history repeats itself, will we see Poser 5 for OSX on sale at Amazon.com for only $99 in January or February? And changing the subject back... if you download an 800M file, how do you get a printed manual? How about a CD in case your hard drive crashes and you need to re-install Poser? Where's the fancy box to proudly show on your shelf (and it is a nice box, after all... listing all kinds of features that won't really work correctly until Poser 6).

mikes ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 8:27 AM

Too late--after reading all the problems with the bloated Windoze version I wouldn't touch this with a 10' pole. I'll be glad to wait for DAZ, however.

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 8:31 AM

800MB? I count 714MB.

DarkMatter_ ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 8:56 AM

took me 15 mins to download poser 5 on comcast cable.

MrMongo ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 9:22 AM

(yawn) I got the e-mail this AM and in all honesty, I could really care more. In the ensuing "dead air" period between the Windows release of P5 and now, I've learned how to do what I need to do using Carrara, sure Bones in Carrara is a bit wonky, but Carrara renders fast (especially the Beta of Carrara 3 -- once you tweak things and do a bit of figguring out stuff that's changed) and I can do modeling and animating in one program. Sure I would've loved to have used Poser, but I just can't escape the feeling that as a Mac user, I'll just be the redheaded bastard child that Curious Labs will feed when they remember. So my bottom line is I'd rather use a software package that truly supports the Mac platform (Carrara Studio) than one who does it when they "seem" to get around to it. That's how I feel and Curious Labs never replied to any of my inquiries. Besides, being newly laid-off, Poser's "uncertain" release date made it drop off my radar. The same thing happened with Animation:Master and I'm no longer updating that package, either. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

took me 15 mins to download poser 5 on comcast cable.

The CL readme estimates 66 minutes for the whole thing at 1500Kbs, which is a pretty good cable/DSL speed. I haven't bothered to check the math. In any case, you obviously have a wider pipe than most people. Nice for you, but I've never measured my Adelphia cable at more than about 800Kbs. Besides, I do like having a printed manual to read away from the computer, and I'm not about to print the PDF on my inkjet.

MungoPark ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 9:42 AM

Why is the store not accessible from Europe ? If you come from Europe Curiouslabs sends you automatically to their european store - theres no Mac poser, and the prizes are much higher than in the American store (btw the euro is over one dollar). The P5 Carrara bundle is 699 in Europe and in the states its 529. If theres an ESD version for MAC - why do we europeans pay more ??????? This is a rip off.

wolf359 ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 9:52 AM

As a propack4 owner I can up grade for $99 but ill pass for a variety of reasons not the least of which is no export of poser animations to my OSX version of cinema 4DXl or My OSX seat of lightwave I have no interest at all in "the Face room" P5 Hair??? no thanks it wont translate to Cinema 4DXl and its too render intensive any way and good old transmaps come over fine to C4DXl hardware accelleration???... NO Open GL ??...NO REAL radiosty??...No true volumetric lights (NOT faked "light cone" solutions)???....NO at this point poser is just a gateway app that lets me get those daz humans easily into Cinema4DXL and or lightwave3d.. Thanks but NO thanks :-)

Charlie_Tuna ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 4:47 PM

Hey Mungo, here's why Poser cost more there 1 USD = 0.878851 EUR 1 EUR = 1.13785 USD

Why shouldn't speech be free? Very little of it is worth anything.

bijouchat ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 5:08 PM

Mr. Mongo... the rumour is that there is a P5 to Carrara plugin in development, its come from really reliable sources (eovia and people connected to eovia), and someone from Eovia has dropped hints it would become available a few weeks after the P5 for OSX release... just fyi... we aren't sure... but its looking up, not down. Might be for C3 though, not sure.

MrMongo ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 5:22 PM

Well Bijouchat, I think that I'll just wait and see -- *If the plug-in allows importing of animated Poser figures, then I could model them in C3 (which has drastically improved the vertex modler, yeh!), xport 'em into P5, bone them and then animate them in Poser and then use the plug in to whisk them back into Carrara *If Curious Labs is serious about the Mac platform. The Mac OS may be a niche market -- but graphics is the Mac's real niche, y'know? *If the plug in would save me time and work -- since I'm creating everything in Carrara, would it acutally save me time to export to Poser, bone the model in poser and then export from Poser back to Carrara? It had better, because the idea of just using a single software app to do all my 3D worx in is awfully attractive (not to mention saving my unemployed self some bux, iykwim). So for me, the "enhancements" of P5 over P4propack are just not really going to be used. Now if the plug in offers some of the "clothiness" of P5 to be used in Carrara...well that's a whole 'nuther species of horse, so to speak. But right now, the plug in is shrouded in mystery and I'll need to know more before I do anything. However, the plug in could be a reason why the animation features in Carrara didn't get any enhancements in the current update...hmmm...

bijouchat ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 5:43 PM

waiting is a good idea. I got P5 especially for the cloth room, myself. It would be nice if those things were able to import.

bijouchat ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 5:44 PM

(the cloth does export to obj, though... just not sure if it will export from a pz3)

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 7:10 PM

I'm going to wait until the early adopters put it through its paces. By then there may be a boxed copy at the local Apple store, as well as a boxed copy of Daz Studio.

stewer ( ) posted Thu, 07 August 2003 at 9:07 PM

mateo, feel free to ask questions. I use the Poser 5/X beta for weeks now.
