Heya all, just wondering if anyone had any idea when the 4.2 update will be released. Really looking forward to it, thanks.

gebe ( ) posted Mon, 11 August 2003 at 1:29 AM

When it will be released, we announce it here:-)

j-art ( ) posted Mon, 11 August 2003 at 6:42 AM

thanks zodo i had just the same question - and thanks gebe for your answer - but it means that no release date is known - is that right ???---- cant await the release - so if anyone get any news - pleeeeze let me know :-)) ---thanks

hoppersan2000 ( ) posted Mon, 11 August 2003 at 2:54 PM

I have just read Curious Labs blurb on this new release, and found buried in the text that the new update still will not support Poser 5s' hair room or dynamic cloth. So what exactly is the big deal. I can get Poser 5 characters into Vue with some tweaking but without the hair or dynamic cloth. Anyone care to tell me how this update enhances the interoperability.

gebe ( ) posted Mon, 11 August 2003 at 3:15 PM

Vue 4.2 will not support Poser hair from the hair room and no cloth from the cloth room. These are very specific Poser 5 files. As you know you even cannot save them inside Poser in the library. You need to save them a special way. This is not Vue's 'fault', but Poser's:-) Guitta

sirkrite ( ) posted Mon, 11 August 2003 at 4:52 PM

You can use the cloth, just not in it's dynamic state. Get the cloth the way you want it, then export it as an object. Then import it and use it in place of the dynamic cloth. It will now be static cloth and Vue can handle that. :) The towl in this picture was made in the cloth room and this render is from Vue. Of cause if you wanted it for Mover, forget about it!

jstro ( ) posted Mon, 11 August 2003 at 7:48 PM

sirkrite - thanks for that info. Very nice to know. I may just get Poser 5 now, since my b-day's not far off. Can I assume the same for dynamic hair? Just create it and then export it as a static .obj to work in Vue? That would be terrific. jon

No, it don't work with Dynamic hair. :( Just the cloth!

Bummer. But I can live with that. jon

So what does the update allow you to do that you currently can not? Animated materials? How about P5 shaders? Thanks, Tim PS> Wish this was coming out before the Daz contest deadline! oh well.

gebe ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 2:08 AM

The update allows you to import Poser 5 imports as Pz3, Vue 4.12 only supports Poser 4 pz3 imports. Guitta

timoteo1 ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 3:09 AM

I can import Poser 5 PZ3's with no problem. That's why I was asking what was the difference. I believe many others on this forum have mentioned they can open P5 PZ3's as well. Thanks, Tim

gebe ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 3:12 AM

You can open Poser 5 pz3 if you also have also Poser 4 installed, but not (I don't know anybody who can???), if you ONLY have Poser 5. Guitta

timoteo1 ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 3:21 AM

Ok, so the ONLY thing 4.2 will do then is allow those without Poser 4 to open P5 PZ3's, correct? If so, that's quite a let down. I'll add that to the long and growing list of Vue let downs. :( _Tim

gebe ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 3:28 AM

There are many users who purchased Poser 5 and did not have Poser 4 before. They cannot import pz3 files into Vue. They need to import as OBJ. Everybody who have tried it knows how long it is to map an OBJ file, part by part. Normally, Vue 4.2 will not import Poser 4 files. But there are tricks to be able to do so. I think it is better we come back to the "tricks" when Vue 4.2 is out, otherwise we will have to repeat it hundreds of times. When the 4.2 update is out, everybody will find in our FAQ--> POSER TO VUE section how to behave:-) Guitta

timoteo1 ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 3:30 AM

Like I said, big disappointment, but I'm getting used to it with Vue. But I am happy for those P5 only users, that is good news for them.

gebe ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 3:44 AM

timoteo, I think it is a great thing and not disappointing at all. What exactly does disappoint you?

timoteo1 ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 3:50 AM

Hurrh? The fact that it does absolutely nothing for me ... typically that's disappointing to people. This update will have ZERO benefits for me and many other users. Unless they're fixing some other things (like OpenGL support, stability, etc.), but I kind of doubt it in such a minor release. Take care, Tim

Lynn ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 12:24 PM

Vue 4.2 update is still under development. It will also have some minor tweaks and other improvements, not just the Poser 5 support. For most purposes, Poser 5 is like a brand new product. Vue 4 has to learn to "talk" with Poser 5 -- we cannot leverage most of our previous work with Poser 4. Poser 5 is more like a replacement for Poser 4 (a much more powerful replacement) rather than an upgrade. Best regards, Lynn Fredricks e-on software

RHaseltine ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 1:31 PM

It seems a dubious upgrade if it is going to, at least partially, break Poser 4 import. It isn't E-on's job to push us to upgrade. I trust you will make sure that Guitta's "trick" (whatever it is) continues to work in future versions (such as Vue 5).

smallspace ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 2:02 PM

Poser 5's material section is completely redesigned with many, many features not available in Poser 4. I'm guessing it's the proper conversion of the new Poser 5 materials into Vue materials that is the main focus of 4.2. -SMT

I'd rather stay in my lane than lay in my stain!

timoteo1 ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 2:06 PM

That's what I was hoping for, but "mum's the word" on it as far as I can tell. Although, they haven't said it WON'T support it ... just the hair and cloth room. Here's to hoping! -Tim

timoteo1 ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 2:10 PM

Lynn:

Hi. I was just wondering if there were any plans to fix any/all of the following usability issues in Vue in an upcoming patch:

  1. OpenGL "support" ... unfortunately, with Vue's current implementation, it can barely be called supporting OpenGL.

  2. Interface responsiveness after a Poser import. (See THIS LINK for more info.)

Thanks!

-Tim

Petunia ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 5:58 PM

Add to that: Boolean functions not being able to cope if one or both objects are moved after the function. (This is a non-functional "feature" within Vue that I would like to kick out of a 30th floor window. No automatic save function. (hey guys, this should be a no brainer. And no multi-undo capability. Gosh... just save often save fast huh?

rds ( ) posted Tue, 12 August 2003 at 7:19 PM

Pot shot time? I look at this thread and I see all these ids with no galleries? But they all sound like the same complaint one supporting the other. However, if you are such a Vue user or into 3D art at all where is your gallery? Before we get deep into this Vue 4.2 perhaps the intent of this type of pot shot questions should be analyzed for obvious reasons.

Djeser ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 12:43 AM

I have to agree with Shoop. It's one thing to ask questions about the features that will/might be in the upgrade, it's another to be rude to Lynn, who is not obligated to come here and respond to our questions. Taking "pot shots" at her for trying to come here and answer questions about a pending update THAT ISN'T EVEN FINISHED isn't the way to communicate in a mature manner with someone who is genuinely concerned about users of the product.

I agree with her that Poser 5 is a really different animal from Poser 4, and since it took what, about 6 months or so? to get to SR2, the folks at Eon may have had to reinvent the wheel several times to rewrite code in order for Vue to function with Poser 5. Isn't it worth a bit of extra time to try and get it right? I've had Poser 5 since it first came out last September, and still haven't installed it because the software still has problems, from what I read over in the Poser forum. So I can imagine the headaches Eon has had trying to get things right between the two programs.

As far as "Boolean functions not being able to cope if one or both objects are moved after the function.", Petunia, I have never had this problem with booleans. Would be interested in more detail and perhaps some screenshots to illustrate your point. As far as not having an auto save function, none of the software I use has auto save, so I don't know why that is such a no brainer. Whether I'm using Poser, Vue, Bryce, Photoshop, PSP, I do incremental saves just in case.

My only concern has been that the update might fix the Poser 5 compatability issues, at the expense of compatability with Poser 4, but if that is the case, I just won't install it.

Hi Djeser:-). Lynn is a HE, not a SHE:-)

timoteo1 ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 1:25 AM

Just for the record, and I don't know if the comments were made towards me or not, but I was not trying to take pot shots at Lynn. I simply was taking the opportunity to inquire about future fixes (that are critical to my continued ability to use Vue as a realistic host for Poser scenes) while I had his attention. I know there is a wishlist and such, and if I was trying to bash anyone I'd whip out my list of "101-things-wrong-with-Vue." ;) -Tim

rds ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 1:48 AM

You can draw more bees to the hive with honey than with vinegar. Tim old boy, sure no one means any harm right? Diplomacy is surely not my biggest assets however I do know a pot shot or a cynical remark when I read one. I think the point being made here is to have some manners and be a gentleman about it if at all possible right? I am sure that was your intent even though it may have come across as cynical. I mean I would like to think so any way. It is just strange for me that someone like yourself that is so interested in Vue and Poser has absolutely no gallery it makes me wonder where you keep all your artwork. As dissatisfied as you sound in writing I would deduct that you would have some examples at the very least. Any way I think you maybe getting the point? I hope. Regards, shoop

timoteo1 ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 2:03 AM

Shoop:

Forgive my non-diplomatic reply, but: What a typical BS post from a still renderer ... I'm a founding member of "1 of 12" (an inside joke about how there are only 12 animators on all of Renderosity). But I should be used to it, as most still renderers think that everyone does the same thing they do and totally forget about those that animate. In the decade that I've been doing CGI stuff, I can count the number of still renders I've done on one hand probably.

The day R'Osity starts hosting (i.e., providing bandwidth and a place to store them) animations, I'll be glad to have a gallery. I'm certainly not as prolific a Philippe (Phoul), but I've been animating for a LONG time. If you count all of the frames I've rendered (like many of we few animators), I've done more images than all of the still-artists combined, LOL! :)

Sorry if it comes across as pot-shots and frustration. It's more a great disappointment than anything, although there is some frustration. (Not nearly as bad as the initial release of P5, though.) I was just probing to see if there was ANY hope of addressing these issues. In my search of this forum, I did not see even any acknowledgement of these problems from the Vue staff. And there are a LOT of things to like about Vue, so I want to see it improve and become a workable tool with Poser animation for me. I'm not looking forward to laying out the cash for C4DXL. ;)

rds ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 2:14 AM

Wow that sounds fantastic if you need some web space to display your work I would be glad to assist. I would really like to see your work is the point here Tim. Thanks for setting me straight and that was not a bad attempt at diplomacy if I do say myself. :)

timoteo1 ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 2:25 AM

Thanks for the offer! That's very nice. PM me and maybe we can work something out. If you search the Poser forum for "Pumpkin Boots", you can see a Halloween short from a LONG time ago. Also, "Matrix Kids" I believe there is still a valid link for. Neither are my finest work by a long shot, but they're short and therefore viewable online. One "quirk" I do have is I'm one of those people who does not like to show anything until it is COMPLETE. That is, completed all sequences, edited together, sound effects, sound track, special effects/compositing, titles, etc. Yeah I know, as a hobbyist, that means not a whole lot gets done. I bow at the feet of Phoul ... especially with the quality of his work, I just don't know how he can be so prolific. Take care, Tim

timoteo1 ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 2:33 AM

PS> I'm entering 1 (maybe two, if Vue co-operates) animtions into the DAZ contest. (I never miss animation contests, because like everything else, they are far a few between for animators.) So maybe if I'm lucky and the competition is not too good (please don't let Phoul enter, please don't let Phoul enter, please don't let Phoul enter ... LOL!) you'll see my entry(s). -Tim

Phoul ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 3:05 AM

:-)))))))))))
I do not enter.
Don't like sport and contests concepts. Anyway, too busy with a big project.

HALEILUJUAAAA!!! God was listening to my prayers! LOL! Just kidding. ;0) I'm actually sorry to hear you are not, but am excited to hear you are working on a "big project" ... can't wait. -Tim

RDS Am I correct in assuming from your post (#25), that if I don't have a gallery, I'm not allowed to express my opinions/comments or ask questions here. If so, this will be my last post. Thanks.

rds ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 12:07 PM · edited Wed, 13 August 2003 at 12:39 PM

Well I usual don't assume if you look closely at the word you can understand why. Let us be honest here this is your first post on this thread if it is your last that is your right and decision not mine. Being a cynic can lead to all kinds of misconceptions and sticking to good manners is the point. If you think have poor manners and taking pot shots is ok then bully for you old man. Good luck to you.

Spit ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 12:33 PM

Is this a thread about the update or about manners? What I'd like to know is if the update still allows PZ3's from Poser 4 to be imported.

gebe ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 12:35 PM

Even members without a gallery at Renderosity are very welcome here. We hope to have them soon in our Vue community:-) Guitta

rds ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 1:03 PM

As you can see as moderator Guitta does an excellent job at staying neutral. I on the other hand call them as I see them. Take it or leave it that is your choice. Good luck and can't wait to see your work as well.

Marque ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 3:05 AM

My only problem is that you announce the update so soon, why not wait until it's almost ready? When it was first announced it sounded like it would be in about a week, how long have we been waiting now? If you don't want people to keep bugging you about it, don't announce it. Marque

gebe ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 3:40 AM

LOL Marque, if e-on would not announce it before (I mean while it is in development), the question "when will come out a new update" will stay here every day:-). So, you are informed. Guitta

Marque ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 8:20 AM

I think I'm going to sue them...I mean people sue for everything else why not sue for making me wait when I want it now now now!! Where's my coffee, I'm going to sue the coffeemaker comapany for making me wait when I want it now now now! 8^P Marque

Lynn, Will there still be support in 4.2 and future revisions for Poser 4 (by itself) or will it then be necessary to upgrade to Poser 5 to maintain new updates of Vue? Just wondering so I can plan finances for the future... ShadowWind

I hope there is still support for PPP or else I won't upgrade anything....Based on MANY reads I wil NEVER upgrade to P5...IMHO

richnovak ( ) posted Thu, 21 August 2003 at 11:56 AM

what i'd like to see from vue, and would pay extra for, is an ability to produce grass/fur/hair that's dynamic like you get with saslite and lightwave. that and dynamic cloth. beyond that (and importing poser animations) there's nothing that would keep vue from being the only app i'd need outside of poser and bodypaint 3d. vue rules. i just hope it gets better :)
