Hello I recently fixed a freestuff upload I have to work for poser. If anyone could attempt to import the files into poser and render some scenes with a character or two for me, I'd be eternally grateful. I am completing a commercial pack, and need to know how well this works in poser. Thankyou sincerely for your help.

Grey_cat ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 6:32 PM

I'll try them. Seeing as how I downloaded them with plan to use them Poser.

Ornlu ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 6:34 PM

You might want to redownload if you dled before today, I fixed a lot of the problems in the first grass set, texturing issues, model complexity, things that were giving poser a rough time.

Oh, is that why I can't get it to expand.

Heres a quick render I did with one of them. It imported fine.

Grey_cat ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 6:51 PM

Sorry, no luck. Are these just 3DS file. If so, why not put the files themselves in a zip file, rather then in a rar file and then in a zip file.

Ornlu ( ) posted Wed, 13 August 2003 at 6:55 PM

Because Zip SUCKS for model compression compared to rar. Get winrar or another rar decompressing program.

Grey, I appologize, but I got about 50 e-mails with this same question, and I have to answer the same every time. Here's a little note that I have included in the retail version of this file. Extremely important If you do not have a program that is able to decompress .rar based files you Must download one of the following programs in order to extract the package files. For Windows: Winrar at http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm For Mac users: Stuffit at http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html Enjoy, If you are still having trouble E-mail me at RobertxMcCarthy@Earthlink.net or contact me Via AIM: RobxMcCarthy

The tiled grass looks best at a slight angle to the camera. For the most non uniform look.

Works great in Poser4. Thanks!

I assume this is the "fixed" version?? Don't know if you saw them or not, but I did post a couple of pic's at the other forum. See link above. I will use your revised ones and do another.

Ornlu, All the grasses work fine for me in Poser 4 except grasses5_78.3ds. Not sure what it is about that one but when I import it, Poser acts as if it's imported but all menu options are greyed out. I have to CLT, ALT, DEL to exit Poser.

Here's one render using the new grass. This time it imported into Poser without any complaining, but I notice that there is no longer an option to select different parts of the grass for material application.

This one is a very closeup of the sprouts (sorry...it's kind of dark). Your preview image shows three grasses. There is another .3ds file in the pack named 5_78. Like cherokee69, I also found that Poser 5 will not open it. It's significantly larger than the others (about 3.78 mb). It opens in Vue and is made up of three parts called "plane", "TooBi" and "TooBig" (I guess it was!). I suspect you did not intend to send this one. I have not tried a render in Vue yet, but did in Bryce. They render best in Bryce IMO. Oh....Vue says that the .3ds file format is obsolete. Now.....it could be that it's actually a newer version that my Vue does not recognize (have not done the last Vue update yet). Will there be texture files included in the package you plan to sell?

Ornlu ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 12:06 AM

Yes, that's something that Rhino did on the export. It's to conserve memory. If you are rendering a lot of those grasses it can cause a memory overload if the model is not divided. Poser can not handle divided models? Can anyone else confirm this and try to load the 78k poly model in poser? 78k polys might just be too much for your system perhaps?

Ornlu ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 12:20 AM

And I would have distributed them in the obj format, but I had to meet the 25 meg max... Obj would have pushed it to 40.

Ornlu ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 12:40 AM

Attached Link: 3dwin convert .3ds to any format

Perhaps try converting the high poly one to obj format, you can do that with 3dwin found here.

sandoppe ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 12:58 AM

I have a 1.7ghz processor, with 512 mb DDR Ram, Pentium IV and Windows XP Pro. Poser can handle pretty huge files on my system. The V3 .obj is over 8 mb and I have some texture files over 22mb. I could open the 78k poly model in Vue without any problem....in fact I rendered an image with it and the sprouts in Vue and it looks very good! Since this isn't the Vue forum, I didn't post it :) The problem loading the 78k poly in Poser could be a Poser issue and most likely a Poser issue with .3ds divided models. My experience is that Poser seems to like .obj files better than .3ds :) The only problems I've ever had with Poser have involved .3ds files. I'm not sure if there is any difference in the quality between the two. Based on what I've seen, if your price is $15, I would probably buy these to use in Vue.....and Poser where possible. Can you address the "this .3ds format is obsolte" message that I got in Vue? Are you using an older version or do I simply need to install that update? :) Also....textures....are there any???

sandoppe ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 1:33 AM

Ornlu, that gadget (3dwin) works pretty good! I exported as an .obj and that newly created 16.8 mb grass now opens fine in Poser 5 :) However, it is all one piece. Is there any way to get the seperate parts in an .obj? I followed the instructions for povray when checking the options boxes. Any tips are appreciated.

Ornlu ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 1:34 AM

Textures are not really needed, and add to the render time, you can use simple grey colors. Did you read my reply above, there's a link to 3dwin that will allow you to convert it into an obj format. This will work better, but the file size is bigger so I couldn't format them this way. OBJ is probably a better format anyway. YOu can just slect a bunch of files to convert to obj, but be warned these files will be much larger than the 3ds form.

sandoppe ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 1:46 AM

We cross posted.....got 3dwin and it does work. Tips on what boxes to check before exporting are still appreciated. Simple grey??? Grey grass??? I've been using Poser materials actually or image maps. Nothing renders fast in Poser 5....textures or not! :)

Ornlu ( ) posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 1:52 AM

Well, any green material or brown will work great. I am not a wonderful texturer, and I didn't want to infringe on someone elses property by including other textures, so it's just the models.

This is great, can't wait for your pack..Sharen
