Too specific a body mesh, I think. Based on Stephanie also, I believe. That's where I think other new characters are going "wrong". It's not "wrong" for the people making the clothes for these specific meshes, as their objective is to make MONEY selling clothes for specific meshes. Can't blame them for that. But while they will no doubt have a fan base of loyal clothes buyers, I think most consumers will move onto more ADVANCED concepts, i.e.: Little Miss Sara over at DAZ. I think the Sara Spritling (sp?) is a more ADVANCED new concept because- TONS of morph range, character sizes, elf-anime-manga, and TONS of CLOTHES that FIT! Seems like a smart investment to me!
In a way, she's too real. Not toonish enough. Very sexy, maybe too sexy. I prefer Koshini over LaRoo (who I haven't gotten yet), because she is obviously a 'toon. Toons can go a number of ways. The cuter, the more childlike, the broader the interest. More people will use Koshini for fae pictures, cute kid pictures, and things like that. She also has a sexy side, but not nearly as real as Aiko. Spit's pic is beautiful, but it doesn't have that Bugs Bunny kinda feel. She's real and sexy, not someone who'd hit Ichiro over the head with a 20 ton weight.
Actually Aiko wears clothes very well..especially those for Stephanie. But lots of Vicky clothes fit her too. Koshini only wears her own, as does LaRoo. So I don't understand your point in regards to Aiko. I have and love Sara Spriteling. But it's not as if she can wear just any clothes, she's Vicky 3.
American Pinup Jamie By Dark Whisper Sara Spritling By Witches and Wyrms Victoria Vogue 2003 By Witches and Wyrms This products are using Magnets to allows to create new characters and continue to use the Clothing we already have. They are just amazing. With the Sara Spritling By Witches and Wyrms I can create various size Anime style figures and continue to use My existing clothing by applying the preset magnets. I think this is one of the reasons Aiko did not become as popular. Also DAZ should have created distinctive clothing for her. Something to set her apart from Viky and Steph.
Oh my, Barb, those are wonderful!!! And there you go again with your beautiful color palette, Dean. She's lovely! crossposted with you pdxjims. My message wasn't referring to yours (though that's probably apparent by context). I didn't get Aiko to do anime. So whatever her failings are there I really don't care. :) I think she's really a lovely model. And Vicky3 always seems so fat after I've used Aiko. LOL
Two characters (and there are several more that have never been "hyped" because of "whatever" reason): 1. Beth West's V2 Sprite Character. This is one of the BEST anime characters around, and I bet almost nobody knows it. The biggest problem I had was her oversized hands, but found a solution by scaling her as a "fashion model" in Poser. The scaling took care of 95% of the problem and only a few minor tweaks made her perfect. She's a beauty and a cutie and beats the pants off most other "anime" characters in my opinion. But maybe I'm just in love (heh) Clothes are a little limited however, but most V2 stuff works fine. 2. Motsura's Manga Vicky and Manga P4 Posette. Motsura is a guy who KNOWS Manga, and is also a fantastic fine art cartoonist as well. His Manga Vicky and Manga P4 are totally fantastic in every way, in my opinion. I was buying Manga comic books 30+ years ago and have spent a great deal of time in Asian cultures and in Japan. Motsura's characters are as AUTHENTIC as it GETS, plus they are great in Z-TOON mode and wear ALL Vicky 2 and Posette clothes! AND they are FREE!. But that seems to be the problem I guess. Generous model makers release stunning characters and they are totally ignored because they don't get the "HYPE".
Veritass: do you have a link to these models so we can take a look? xoconostle: I love that face! & like you, I'm not really interested in genuine manga or genuine anime (other than for information purpposes) spit: thanks! If a character 'talks' to me, it's what I use. More characters, more expressive possibility for me :)
I don't think Aiko failed. I think that the 'latest new thing' is what we hear about, and the older stuff we still use steadily just doesn't get much 'press'. :) I have Aiko, Koshini, and LaRoo. I hate LaRoo's default face. But RDNA has a great support system in for her, and they've given her face morphs galore. She has a cool sassy style to her. Aiko has some Sass too, and she can look more realistic. Koshini to me is almost always adorable. Though I admit some of the morphs people have done to her scare me. :)

Barbass and others interested, here are some links. Motsura's website is in JAPANESE, so if that frightens you, return home immediately. (These are MANGA CHARACTERS, not ANIME CHARACTERS.) Otherwise: If you go to Motsura's website (link Above) and click on the ORANGE bars you can get: 1 Low Res Manga Babe Viki 2. A NEW 30 Morph Target KOTE HEAD for BOTH Manga Vicky and Manga P4 FEM 3. And Below, on that SAME page is a 19 Morph Target KOTE HEAD (Ver.1) for Manga P4 Posette. 4. If you click on the ORANGE BAR Below that, You can get the ORIGINAL IDOL and a Character that looks A LOT like Ichiro. (Keep in mind Motsura did these characters a few years ago). 5. Click on the ORANGE BAR below that (Don't let the Japanese language scare you, folks, it really ISN'T so difficult to navigate) You can get Misuzu and Sonoko, both are cute Manga Babes that wear P4 FEM Clothes. There are also links for Koshini and Ichiro clothes as Motsura has been supportive of these characters, but basically he created P4 versions of these characters LONG BEFORE Koshini and Ichiro had come out.Attached Link: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=1360154
Scroll down to message number 23 to see ernyoka1's rendering of Manga Vicky in Poser Z-Toon mode.Aiko did not have the crucial ongoing support of her designers in new clothes hair outlooks almost every week. Also she was the very first mass promugated fantasy figure-- I'm not gonna call her anime either--and as such suffered from buyer remorse, a lot of criticism, surprise and unfamiliarity with her shape and face. Kinda lack of imagination on the part of her users. I think she's still the best figure out there. But she's not anime, not Manga, she's what she is. And that's much more mature and sexy than Koshini. Her expressions are considerably deeper. It's hard to find a place to set her with other characters because she inhabits her own world in a knowingly enigmatic way. As Barb and others have shown, she's extremely beautiful-- try her with the more exotic Steff textures sometimes. Koshini is fun- she emerged in a time of war, I think she answered a very deep need to escape into fantasy. Also she's a fabulous mesh for a simple doll-like figure. She makes a great fairy-- which Aiko never did successfully, though i'll bet some mastersz of faery have great renders of her. Making a great fairy is designed to give you life in Poser. But the basis of Koshini's character and populrity is she's fun to work with as is Ichiro. We can let our kid inside out. She fills a unique niche beautifully. LaRoo, seems to me, to be more in the Aiko variety. I cna see the two of them having maritinis and dishing over this stupid Koshini craze, while secretly playing with the dolls at home. Hmmm. . . there's a render in that. Emily

You must have Beth West's Roxanne 2 character pack from Renderosity Marketplace. But to me the full package is totally worth it. She doesn't look "ANIME" right off the bat. Give her a tan skin color, Z-Toon her and I recommend "LULU Hair" for a real Asian look- but use hair from Maya, Taruru and others if you want that real Anime hairstyle look.If we want to talk abot characters that disappeared off the map, there's plenty of them. Mikey -- which beats the milBoy hands down. The original Beast Master, which is still one very well-designed mesh and whose physique almost suggests a precursor to Mike: I'd still like to see what someone could do with him. The DAZ Businessman and -woman, whose stylistic strangeness has lend itself to a whole bunch of corporate illustration projects I've handled. I'm sure people can think of even more. Guess we forget sometimes it's not always about Vicky.
To add to the Anime-ish recommendations, there's a character named 'Maeve' in the RMP. It's a 'lips anime' type, but it definitely has a very cartoony/drawn look, and it's a V2 character. I picked it up because it looks elmost exactly like several of my wife's drawings. On the downside, the packaging is rather horrible, as it's loaded initially from a PZ3 file with all the lighting and pose set and such, and you have to do some work to put it in a CR2 in a default pose, and more work to transfer the actual morphs and stuff over (though that's true of all V2 morph stuff).
Aiko didn't get product support right away which really hurt the mesh. Also, Aiko's face is hard to customize - it always looks too scrunched to me. Aiko's male version is very difficult to get to look male and anime, which was another turn off. I don't want to do anime with only female figures. I bought an expansion pack of morphs and didn't like most of the new morphs, either. Bishonen Mike came out so much later that I'd already put Aiko away and didn't have much interest in bringing her back out. Koshini and Ichiro aren't easy to really customize but they're very manga and their features are somewhat childlike, which means most people will find them cute. (Most people find kids cute to look at.) I don't like LaRoo's default face (some early renders reminded me of Smeegle and one literally scared out of my chair) but the new (free) morph pack took away my objections to her. I'm now starting to play with her and I can see my characters emerging from the base mesh. Some of the freebie anime figures out there are too stylized, free or not, accessories or not. Eyes taking up 1/2 the head is a bit much for me. And some of them are marked as non-commercial only, which I'm assuming means no commercial renders. I doubt I'll ever become a commercial manga artist, but I can dream. ;-) Cheers!

There's something about Aiko's face in that last picture that reminds me of Michael Jackson. I can't put a finger on what it is but to me there's "something wrong" with Aiko. It's really a pity, and yes (s)he needs more CLOTHES!

xoconostle: "3. Based upon what was originally a male mesh" HAR! Thanks for that laugh. FBN, that's one of the best Aiko renders I've seen (not that I tend to see that many)... and not just because it uses two of my products ;) - I like your composition/style and that's a cute face. BTW, has anyone here bought Sixus' new kinda goth-doll (Trixie?) character? I'd be interested to see more renders of her.

I love Aiko. I think she's beautiful, in a non-realistic way (I happen to be a fan of cartoony and illustrative stuff). The biggest problem with Aiko was the lack of support for her, as many others have noted. There are SOME Aiko clothes, but they're all third party! DAZ never made anything for her as far as I've ever seen or am aware. It's also a pain in the neck to get hair that fits her properly (although it's not impossible, of course). DAZ released the VersaHair package, which was quite expensive and then nothing else ever came out that fit poor Aiko. As for the male version of Aiko, he had big possibilities, I thought, but he was even more undersupported. Not even third-party clothes for the poor boy. :( I also have Koshini, who I don't use much but who I do like, and I have Ichiro and LaRoo. LaRoo is my latest toy, so I'm using her a lot at the moment. But lately I've been thinking that I really want/need to get Aiko out and give her a go again. :) bonni

Oh, meant to add this... I think MayaDoll is more just a Japanese-looking young woman. I don't think she is or was intended to be an anime character. It's possible to be Japanese and NOT be anime. ;-P bonni

bonni, Poserworld has a set of clothes for both Aiko male and female. But that IS the only male clothes I've ever seen for him sigh

Oh, yes! Forgot about that. I'm a member, too. D'oh! :-) I think Xena (WickedWomyn) also has some clothes morphs for the male Aiko, come to think of it, but I'm not a big fan of morphed clothes for various reasons. bonni

Maya Doll actually bears a significant resamblance to Final fantasy game characters, especially Rinoa... And I believe that Final Fantasy creators intended to do their characters in manga style. There are more than one style of manga (as well as anime). Koshini represents the Super Deformed (SD) type, disproportional and sweet... Maya Doll is the adult/ adolescent type, kind of 'Ghost in the Shell' figure, if You know what I mean. Masamune Shiro's manga...

Hope that helps answer that question... We also have a Gothic Toon Girl called Nothing which MomCat did a couple of renders of.....but I won't bog down the thread with any more posts :) Rebekah Garner Sixus1 MediaIn a way, she's too real. Not toonish enough. Very sexy, maybe too sexy. She's not bad. She's just rendered that way. (Sorry. Couldn't resist. The term "sexy toon" just immediately called Jessica Rabbit to mind.) bonni

Somebody surely has a weird idea of "failure". Why would any artist want to churn out rendering after rendering of the latest character wearing the latest products just to be a walking marketing weasel? An artist wants to have a stable of models in her folders so that whatever the concept, she can pull out something to help realize it... and it just might be something different from project to project. If I had a contract for a cartoonish project I'd want the kidstuff; if I had a contract for a pin-up, I'd see what I had in the way of sex-goddesses; if it was a narrator, a newscaster, a village wisewoman, I'd see what I had that could be tweaked to fill the role. Same for the male models. Sometimes we need a fantasy bodybuilder and sometimes a gentleman. If a model still proves useful a year later, THEN I'd consider it successful... not whether anybody else used it. This brings back strong memories of junior high where all the 12-year-olds had to wear the same clothes and listen to the same music to be "in". Do any of you need to use the same character as everybody else to be popular? Carolly
Carolly: i saw highschool (or even university) students of 16 years old and above behaving like that too. I see your point and agree, and given my tastes and need, Yamato's Tenten/cancan serie and Maya's Mayadoll perfectly suits them, even if i have to tweak them a bit from time to time. Boefore knowing them i tried countless time to bend "so popular" vicky to my needs, without a success... though the problem is the characters do what i need but most of the wardrobe/clothes in various fields are on v2 only :( that is a problem... ransom of glory i suppose
I sincerely doubt it's a "everyone else uses it" kind of thing. After all, in mid-2002, many of us decided to play with the MilGirl characters over at Faeriewylde because it well suited the theme of the site. The MilGirl doesn;t have a whole lot of commercial items, so most of us enjoyed seeing what we could either make fit, or what we could create of post-work in. Me, I enjoy the Aiko mesh because I happen to find her among the most versatile... same with the Yuka/Mayu mesh variants. OTOH, if I want something a bit more realistic, I'll whip out the Vickies, or whatever comes handy. Anyone looking at my wee gallery will know that I'm not one to ride popularity waves... Outside of the hothouses of PPros and R'osity, I've found that the hottest download item I've posted was a Yuka render, followed very closely by Aiko... the whole list of stuff I've contributed to the Linux world is here: http://themes.freshmeat.net/~Penguinisto/ . Each page has it's own download stats, and I enjoy adding to the pile as time permits. :) To make a long story short - you do what you like, and the rest of the world will judge the results. If it's good, then you've managed to transmit your creativity well. If the result is bad, at least you can be comforted by the thought that you never gave in to crass commercialism. /P
