Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2025 Jan 03 1:41 pm)
I highly recommend Nerd3D's tutorial: http://www.nerd3d.com/Tutorial/Cloth/Cloth.htm If your cloth is falling to the floor, you probably forgot to pick a collision object. Don't give up, learning the cloth room isn't that hard, and it's worth it. Dirk, what you want to do is very possible, and should be fairly easy.
Could you amplify "It didn't work"?
Wondering why you are asked to calculate frames for a static pose is not an unreasonable question. It took me a while to get my head round it also. What I found was that Poser needed to calculate where the cloth needs to be, its not like conforming clothing. It does this in a series of steps or frames. If we want to drape cloth over the figure then the form that the cloth will take will be dependant on how its applied. Fall under gravity? Pulled across from the side? In either case motion is involved, and the results will vary. You can not just tell Poser to "Drape the cloth" . The gnomes that make it all work will be scratching their heads saying, "Drape? which way, how?" If you don't tell them then THEY all go down the pub with the result that "it didn't work".
The frames are a key part of the cloth room. I'm new to Poser and know nothing about animation, so it took me awhile to figure out that part. But I did it, and if I can, anyone can. :-) Basically, you can't drape cloth without creating an animation. Yes, even for a still image. After you run the calculation, go back into the pose room and use the animation slider to run through the animation you've created. (If you're like me, you've probably never touched the animation menu before. But you have to, for cloth.) If you're on frame one, it may look like it didn't work. But move through the other frames, and you should see the cloth start to drop into place. When the cloth is where you want it, stop and render that one. Also, for what you want to do, I would choose "Figure 1" (or whichever figure Mike is) for the collision object, rather than a particular body part.
OK Parenting the cloth to the figure is good because once the clothfying bit is all done you may want to move him to another part of the scene. By parenting, the cloth will follow him and not get left behind. Parenting/Not parenting makes no difference to the cloth calculation.
In the cloth room what are you selecting the cloth to collide against? Are you just selecting a few body parts? If so I found it best to select the whole figure then click the option boxes to discount the head, feet or hands.
Can you give a screen shot of the scene before going into the cloth room. Is the cloth hovering above the figure? Is it touching any part of it?
How many frames are you using? (I suggest use 30). Are you using any drape frames?(I'd probable not use any in this example). Are you selecting the "Drape from zero" option? (Probably best not but will depend on what you show me as your starting point)
Back-at-ya :)
Select it to collide with all figures. I can not see if it will hit the head, feet or hands so leave them in for the moment. I would not bother with the drape frames. If I've understood you right and the figure is in the above pose throughout then do not use "drape from zero". Add in the cloth self collision option. Possibly increase the simulation frames to 45 to allow the cloth to settle.
Give that one a go :)
Looks like you got the cloth to drape. You're getting there!
It might be tricky to get the cloth to fall exactly the way you want it, along his leg that way. It may slide all the way to the floor, because of his position. If so, try selecting a frame before the cloth slides to the floor. If it doesn't look exactly like you want it, you could always use magnets to pull it into place.

could someone talk me through this?? I'd like to have mike on a chaise, nude with genitals on, I would like a cloth draped over the hip and genitals, with the fabric close to the skin giving the outline of the genitals (sensual but not nude) Is this possible? I have tried tutorials with no luck.
