Subject: need some help: saving Jpegs as default

woodhurst ( ) posted Thu, 11 September 2003 at 3:40 PM · edited Thu, 08 August 2024 at 2:46 AM

For some reason, now everytime I try to save a pic off the web (right click/ save picture as) it automatically saves it as "untitled" and is in bitmap format. just until a couple of days ago, it would save as the images name and in jepg format. its quite frustrating having to save every image w/ quotaions and .jpeg, does anyone know why it is doing this and if i can chnage it? some help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

btw im using windows xp home edition (yes, i know:)

yes, you need to empty your temporary internet files. then you can save jpg's again. and what's wrong with using XP? It's great IMO (using pro)

Aye, I use '98 normally, but I have a 40GB XP drive to boot from, if necessary. I love XP, but dont' want to take the time to transfer all of my programs over... Windows 98 does the same thing sometimes, I'm sure it's cache related like Great Dane says...

woodhurst ( ) posted Thu, 11 September 2003 at 4:24 PM

thanks dane, come to think of it I havent cleared it out in a while! I dont hate XP or anything, it just has alot of pointless apps that bog my comp down after a while.

Your welcome woodhurst. ah, I thought it was a hatestatement, LOL

if you have a fast enought connection you can go into your internet properties, and adjust the amount of temp files your puter will save. I set mine at 10mb max. Also, if you go into your properties window, select the far right tab, named advanced, scroll allll the way to the bottom under security, there's a box to check beside "Empty Temporary Internet files when Browser is Closed" (I use that too, tho it won't work on cookies) Those are win 98 settings, but am sure can be converted somehow for xp.

Thanx Jen, it works on XP pro too. 8)

ok, I'm really stupid with all this type stuff. I've got at least 3 problems related to stuff mentioned above. 1- I don't know how to enable cookies on my pc, I'm using Win 98. I went everywhere I could think of. 2- somehow, yahoo takes over when I click on a link which is really fustrating because I when I want to save a link to my aol faves, I can't. (plus I can't find the yahoo faves list) 3- Is there a way to clean out the ram without shutting down the PC? I feel dumb asking these things but heck, nobody is going to read my mind and give me the answers. Thanks in advance for any help you guys come up with for me. Angela

lol ok Ang, am on 98 now, so will browse as I type... 1. cookies. first, open your browser and go to tools, internet options. select the Privacy tab and set it to about Medium...(any higher and I had problems with my bank account online, or server access sites) 2. I dont' do AOL...lol...but if you want it as your primary browser, there should be a way to make it your default. 3. To remove programs, from using RAM without shutting down, (this will only be in effect til you reboot, then all goes back to normal) press control alt delete ONCE.....when the box pops up, select one program at a time and click end task....repeat until you close everything but what you need...TIP: DON'T close Explorer or systray....that will crash the pc and you will need to reboot. But those two are the only two required running to run your pc... As you open othe rprograms, it will add those to that list... hope this helps some Jen

Thanks Jen, so there isn't any thing that says cookies, but if I change my security then the pc should accept cookies? I don't remember now what I needed it for, I already do internet banking and don't have a problem. As far as I know Aol should be my primary, but who knows what happened when I installed Yahoo. I should uninstall it for what its worth. Your third answer is intriquing. Am I wrong in assuming that the list that comes up is all stuff running while I'm on the computer, whether I want it to or not. I remember a post a while back (yours probably) on how to get rid of all kinds of stuff from automatically starting up. This stuff you've told me should definately help me. Thanks, Angela

JC_01 ( ) posted Fri, 12 September 2003 at 8:16 AM

yep, that third option shows everything running. Whether you want it there or not..it's a complete list so to speak grins For an example, I installed a 30 day demo of a virus software, after it expired, I "uninstalled the program" However, to this day I still find parts of it still running in that box, and when I close them, the only thing it affects is how much FASTER my pc goes..LOL for a pretty complete list of everything installed on your pc, go into control panel, then add/remove programs. (you'd be amazed what ya find in THAT box hahaha) Although I recommend using the uninstaller with a program, for any that comes with one, then go into add remove programs for the ones that don't. Some times Add/remove leaves empty folders behind, while uninstalling doesn't usually. Just in case anyone's interrested, here's another lil thing to speed up the desktop a lil. Windows Display Tweak 1. Click on the Start menu and select Run. Type in "regedit" (without the quotes) in the Open field. 2. Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER key. 3. Expand the Control Panel key. 4. Expand the Desktop key. Then do one of the two steps below. * Select MenuShowDelay. Right-click, select Properties, and enter a value to 0 * If you don't have MenuShowDelay, you can create it. Here's how: 1. Right-click on Desktop key. 2. Select New > String Value and name it MenuShowDelay. 3. Right-click on MenuShowDelay, set its value to 0 (default is 400 milliseconds). 5. Restart Windows. grins

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 12 September 2003 at 2:29 PM

What does that do Jen? I'm always scared of changing anything in the registry just in case my whole world falls apart. lol 8) Catlin

JC_01 ( ) posted Fri, 12 September 2003 at 3:24 PM

lol can't blame you Catlin That basicly sets the delay in how long it takes to show hidden menu, like when you open your start menu, and go to something with a right arrow, default setting is 400 for the delay, this sets it to 0.
