For forum posting, image dimensions don't matter, but file size does. Go over 200KB, even on a 64x64 image and you'll get a complaint.

If you have Photoshop, you can "Save for the Web", which lets you set compression based on desired file size. Nifty neato keen. ;)

The reason I dislike these giant graphics is that I have to scroll to view them....I can't see them complete on my monitor. Keep in mind that not everyone has giant screens. Of course if you don't care if other people can view your graphics or not, I guess that point doesn't matter. I'll never know if it was worth viewing or not. If it is too big to fit comfortably on my browser, I don't bother. I'm funny that way.
No but Dialyn has a point. I have a fairly large monitor and the resolution set at 1280x960, yet I STILL have to scroll to see all of that HUGE dolphin image. Sure you can post huge crapics in here, but what's the point? The general idea in posting a picture is for someone to see it, and by making it so large, you loose a great number of potential viewers. Chances are poeple will get annoyed instead of pleased. Personally I am annoyed when a picture is too large for my monitor. Yes "Save for Web" is a great feature. I thought everybody used that? Without it, Photoshop makes ugly artifacted large jpg's.

plus you can't read the thread text because it spreads out all over the darn place... 640 is plenty wide enough...at least I can read the thing then

yup i'm in agreement with that..i have my screen set to 1024x768...and scrolling sucks.from working on other folks systems,i know A LOT of folks set thier's even lower...the general average is probably 800x600,allthough it might be higher around here with the more visually/artistically inclined population. paint shop pro has a similar option to photoshop btw...alltho it works a bit oddly... load your image>go to the file menu> choose "export" and from there you can get the wizards that do jpeg, gif and png optimization/compression..the compression setting is variable and you can see the before and after to check for artifacts, also tells you the resulting file size and approximate download times for different connection speeds.
Jpg Optimizer by xat.com does the same thing and more efficiently than PsP. You can control what part of the image you want compressed, retaining a higher resolution for more important parts of the image. Been using it for years. There's a free version and a shareware version, with the later providing more control options.
I think 1024X768 is good especially if you can keep it under 200K. My last few posts, I was able to keep them all under 200K

no 1024 is too large as well...I think 800.. My screen is set to 1024, but that one up there is way too big

I'm on a 21" CRT at 1600x1200 and that last dolphin image is even beyond my screen! ;) I prefer 800 width on forum images as well. Some of us use laptops (which usually are fixed at 1024x768) or, worse, PDA's on occassion (I use my HP 2215 to browse when not able to be on my computer).

Hi Yes I'll go for 800x600 and I'm using a 1024x768 flat(15") screen so larger res is not an option. I'll also go with Dialyn in that I terminally hate scrolling the screen to read a thread so please, please don't makr the images posted too big folks. btw yes I know this was just a demonstration. dave
Sorry, but this is totally needless. I have to agree with Marque on this...just because one can do this doesn't mean it's a good idea. In fact, it's a real turn-off. It distorts the way the thread displays, and is rude to those who use smaller screen resolutions. Please don't do it just because you can.
The pictures are there allright. I'm using IE and they show up. Some of them only after a large space of nothingness though, becourse they're centered. LOL @ Ratteler's post! Very nice render of a white-out :o)

The problem is not if you a post big pictures or not the problem is that in forums there should be a script to check the image dimensions not only the size. This should be take as a need to be fixed because it disrupts the forum threads and I can use it to make a mess of all forums. My opinion is that in forums the image dimensions should be restricted to les than 800 even 640 is large after all there are galleries for large pictures and in forums you want to discuss an issue or idea not immerge someones art work.
That may be, Rattler, "one line educational message might do much more than another restriction built into the code", but what do you do if I build a picture 1 pixel high and 4000 wide and using a script I upload that on all forums? First you won't even know that it is me, second all forums will be a mess, so in my opinion that might be an issue that the technical team should think about.
The problem with these massive images and not having any restrictions on size or dimension is that this dang site already loads slow as molasses. Can you imagine if there were no limits on image size?! I run at 1024x768 and prefer that for my work. I know that I have images in my puny gallery at this resolution, but would not have a problem limiting to 800x600.
I'd like to believe it, but given how widespread SPAM is and the fact that no amount of complaining seems to stop it, and the fact that every place I've ever worked as an admin, never makes use of the logs, hell, I'm the only person who reads the postmaster account... I'm more imclined to believe that complaints are ignored. I'm tracking about 7 discrete IP ranges that are just SPAM farms, at present. No amount of complaing will change things, and blocking it will only stop it for so long, I track SPAM more by style, and MX name than by IP these days. The same outfits just keep coming back. later jb

On a related note this time, with firebord you can right click on the image and select, "remove this image" and then you have no more problems... later jbDo a Google search for Proxomitron. It's a small app that acts as a proxy server between your browser and the web and allows you to do virtually anything to the content before it hits the browser, filtering, replacement etc. I suspect you could pretty easily configure it to resize images and even filter out annoying posters in the Poser forum - not that there are any of those of course.
