Vue F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Dec 13 6:58 am)
I doubt if it's your hardware. I'm running it on a much less powerful system and it works fine. Same OS. 2Ghz, 256Mb RAM. Make sure that XP and your video drivers are patched up to the latest version. If the windows video driver doesn't help then try the one on ATI's website (and vice-a-versa). Sometimes there is a big difference. Also make sure that video card is supported. I think it is but I don't remember off the top of my head.
I'm experiencing something similar on a P4-1.8, 512 Meg of RAM, ATI All in Wonder 9700 Pro win2K. Maybe it's an ATI driver thing, not sure. Basically the interface for me begins to degrade (missing buttons), the system gets seriously slow (like you said with the lockups on moving anything), until it finally crashes and burns. The longest I've been able to run was an hour. If I do get it closed via task manager, it has to be rebooted anyway because the whole windows system is trashed at that point.
As I said, back to Vue 4 I guess for awhile until hopefully they figure out this mess...

Try turning off Open GL in the file/options menu. My graphics card works with it, but it didn't work that well and caused a lockup for me the first time I tried to use Pro. I'm used to wireframe anyway. It's a constant irritant, though!
I have an intel 2.4 ghz MB and a Radeon 9100 card - same thing locks up - it didn't till I downloaded the latest drivers just had a few artifacts. Solved it for now by removing the card and using the built in video on the MB - it works just fine even with Open GL but the performance is not excelent as with a good video card - I am waiting to find out what the best card is before I purchase one.
Sounds to me like we have an ATI problem for sure. I have tried just about every combination of open gl parameter options in vue pro. I hate stepping back to wireframe as one of my big reasons for going to pro was to be able to use open gl to help plant placement. I did step back to wire frame, loaded some scenes that had caused crashes and had no problem. Next I went back to open gl, loaded the same scenes and had no problems. ?????? I am now busily trying to recreate earlier crashes to verify what is going on but can't nail it down any further than an ATI related bug. e-on & ATI are you listening?? mokba
Do other OpenGL apps (not games) run OK?
If so, then this is part of the perennial problem with Vue and OpenGL. I have a Radeon 9800 Pro. It seems to work with Pro when the driver is installed but not the control panel or any other ATi components.
Try
My system seems to work OK with this set up and Catalyst driver 6.14.10.6378 dated 12/08/03. I say "seems to" because I still get crashes with Vue under XP but the OS install is old and in need of wiping and reinstallation. Incidentally, other OPenGL apps work OK.....
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Mark

Wow, I see a lot of great renderings by new Vue Pro users and wish I was one of the same. I have yet to get more than three minutes of run time from my new software. Whenever I change a parameter using the control arrows, whether it be a texture scale, bump gain, size of light, etc., the software locks up my machine and I have to reboot by cutting off power. Ctrl, Alt, Del doesn't even work. I am running WinXP Pro with an Intel P4 3ghz chip and 2 gigs of ram. My video card is an ATI 9800 Radeon Pro with 128 mb of board memory. I don't think I am running short on machine resources for a scene with one light, one terrain, one planet and no plants. Ideas anyone?
