Question (for any who might know): If you own plugins that you have purchased, does getting a new version of PS mean you need to upgrade those plugins? Or does it vary from plugin to plugin or manufacturer to manufacturer?

Most of the time Adobe tries it's best to ensure most recent 3rd party plugins are supported. The same "can not" be said about "older" plugins. I ran into trouble with KPT3 seizing control of PS and not releasing it when using certain plugin filters... The trouble was with the interface and you needed to force KPT to end. In that case, the version of plugins were considered too old to be concerned with patching (by either the manufacturer or adobe)

but it doesn't hurt to check for patches ;)

so what is KPT3 ?

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Wed, 29 October 2003 at 6:51 AM

"so what is KPT3 ?" Kai's Power Tools. Plugins from MetaCreations (then sold later to Corel, I believe).

I installed EyeCandy4000 into the new version of PS and they work fine. I have KPT3. There was a trick to using them with version 7. It wasn't perfect, but it worked. Once you run KPT3, you have to open one of those new features that they added to PS7. I think one of them was Liquify. You have to use the shortcut keys to do it, because you can't select anything with the mouse after you run KPT3. Once Liquify is open, you can just cancel out of it and you're back in control again. There were actually two of them that you could open and I think Liquify was one of them. I usually check to see what the short cut keys are right before I run KPT3 so I know what I need to do.

Well, "Me", you have KPT 3! There is another thread below that says it has the ability to make a gradient on a path. Is that true?

MeInOhio ( ) posted Wed, 29 October 2003 at 7:12 PM

Well, I've never done that, so I can't say for sure. I know you can make all sorts of gradients with it. If I find my book, I think it's called Secrets of KAI Power tools or something like that, I see what it says. I think KPT3 was once one of THE plug-ins to have. There are lots of other things you can do too, like page curls, kalediscopes, textures, etc.

I didn't bother with PS7, and my CS isn't here yet, but as I recall any ctrl-key shortcut that brings up a dialogue (such as cmd/ctrl-l for levels) will unstick the interface after using KPT3

The 7.01 update for PS fixed the problems with KPT 3.

Bloody new versions. I wish they would wait untill they have invented some mindblowingly ingenious feature before they update. Probably the only inovative thing in the past few versions has been the intro of the Healing Tool in v.7(although it's pretty limited). But hey, I'm still on Win98.

ChuckEvans ( ) posted Sat, 01 November 2003 at 7:42 AM

Yeah, the healing tool was a great one. The reviews said that the upgrade was probably overpriced for the additions but that diehard PS users (been on the PS teet since v4, I think) would purchase anyway. Wasn't the last upgrade $129 or $139? Can't remember. Amazon has it for $5 less and a search on CNET shows a place selling it for $150-something.
