Hey fellow poser addicts:) The folks at Poser Pros were kind enough to host my Marigold character (a morphable flower and leaf cluster figure set). It's a pretty configurable little thing (the flower figure has 14 morphs) and is suitable for garden scenes, art pictures...whatever....and it's free, as long as you promise to water it every once in a while:)

Check it out, if you haven't already. Here is a really quick render done in P4. All of the flower figures are just different morph settings, and the leaf clusters at the base of the stalks are the two different leaf clusters (useful for filling that garden out with out killing your system, lol)

This is very nice and useful, good work. And thanks for offering it as a freebie.

Thank you!

Thank you! They're lovely.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 5:30 AM

I got the marigold, bought the coleus and these plants are really nice. It's really nice to have some morphing plants.

Lunaseas ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 6:44 AM

very nice...one of the few plants that won't die on me(unless you have a morph for that too!)

shazz501 ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 8:20 AM

very pretty indeed, thanks for sharing them :)

Treewarden ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 8:38 AM

Great! I was looking for just such a thing! Thank you very much!

mamba-negra ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 9:12 AM

Heh heh, I'm just glad folks can use them:) There are bend morphs, and morphs to droop the leaves. However, no dead morph...I guess watering is optional! A member here asked for one for a seasonal render he was working on, and I thought it might be fun to try....I'm very happy with how it came out:) I hope to be able to do more in the future, time permitting! Keep your eyes on the PP front page. Bandwidth is a hard thing to come by, so I'll probably not be hosting them myself! I think my next one will be a sci-fi plant.....looks real enough, but it's not based on anything I've ever seen:) eric

This is great work. Thank-you!

ronstuff ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 2:15 PM

Thanks so much for this generous gift - your plants are really great!

catlin_mc ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 5:11 PM

Lovely flowers mamba but for some reason I cannot d/l them. Every time I try to d/l them I get taken to the login page even though I'm already logged in and it refuses to accept my login info to get the flowers. I don't know what is going on. 8( Catlin

Thanks again, amigo. Excellent work!

mamba-negra ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 6:20 PM

Hey Catlin, I sent you a message regarding an alternative download. I'll send the folks at PP a note to see if maybe there was a problem in the download, but you might want to do the same (in case they need some additional info...cookie questions, browser whatever...) Howdy Xoconostle (I just realized I had been transposing the C and N in your handle....now it's even harder to say:), I hope you were able to get your Dia De Muertos done....I feel bad that I took so long getting back to it (and that I sent you a version that had tiled petals....ugh, what a nightmare it must have been trying to texture that if you were shooting for transparencies:( This one is much better...I promise:) eric

ronstuff ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 8:08 PM

mamba-negra - I love the plants, but I noted that you only supply the bump maps in BUM format. I would really like to get the grayscale source images (JPGs) used to create the original BUMs because BUMS don't give true bump mapping (they just simulate it) and don't work well in poser 5. Could you please make the source files for the bump maps available? It is not possible to re-create them from the BUM format. Thanks.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 8:39 PM

Ron, Would using the original color texture and creating a greyscale of it be the same thing?

mamba-negra ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 9:08 PM

Let me compile them into an archive, and I'll zip 'em off to you, ronstuff. The reason I left the jpgs out, was due to an issue with Poser Pro (which might be happening in P5 as well...) Something in Poser Pro causes the edges of tiled bump maps to show ridges, even if the bump is a solid color (or a seamless texture....very strange. It doesn't happen when you convert them into bum files, nor does it happen in P4 (which is using bum files) I assume it's yet another unfixed bug in poser :( Give me a little bit...in the middle of something, but I'll get it out before I go to bed:) I'll stick them in a zip file for anyone to download....so check back at this link later tonight! eric PS, cherokee69 is at least partly correct. The textures are based on the bump map, though not exclusively (I did do some other stuff to them...) You should be able to get an approximation in the meantime. The black and white one (I think it was in both packages...but maybe just the marigold) might even be the real thing...not 100% certain OTOH.

ronstuff ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 9:20 PM

OK, thanks so much - you are correct that P5 has problems with tiled bump maps - It didn't occur to me that you were tiling your bumps because the textures themselves seem to cover the entire leaf or petal without tiling. Maybe we can develop a P5 material to do the trick, but if the UV mapping is tiled it might still be a problem. I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

mamba-negra ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 9:46 PM

The petals on and leaves on both sets are not tiled....just the stems. I could probably see about making an update to the stems to see if I could get a decent untiled version (didn't realize that there was a problem until I was finishing up the coleus....and I had no idea that P5 couldn't use bums!) However, I can't promise that for some time (at least a few days.) It will require creating a reasonable map, then reworking the mesh to look right.... That is purely for the stems and the base (green part) of the marigold flower. As for leaves and petals, I am pretty sure that those are all single squarish maps, and I should have the original files. Give me some time to dredge up those files eric

Thanks mamba I got them. 8) I tried clearing my cookies as they said at PP but I still can't access anything but the forums. Catlin

jehllm ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 6:47 AM

I get the same thing when I try and login, which has been a constant problem with PoserPros - I generally never go there because the login just doesn't seem to work. why people can't get the basics right in setting up web pages is a constant wonder.

cherokee69 ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 6:52 AM

Really strange. I don't have any problems at Poser Pros logging on, making purchase, or getting the free items. Well, at first I did until I deleted my Poser Pros cookies, went back and logged in again. After that, it's been working good.

rcook ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 7:26 AM

catlin_mc, thanks for posting your login issues to the PoserPros Site Feedback forum. I don't always see our site issues when posted on another site. ;) jehllm, the login cookie is simply the phpBB forum software's login cookie. I have done nothing to modify it from the default as it came with the software. I'm sorry it's not working for you. Generally the problem is that the cookie has become corrupted and can no longer log you in. Simply deleting any cookie from PoserPros usually clears up the problem. Sometimes the browser creates two cookies, one with the "www" and one without. If anyone continues to have problems logging in, please feel free to work with me directly and I'll do what I can to help you get logged in, russell@poserpros.com. Russell

cherokee69 ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 7:45 AM

Russell, That's what worked for me.

Caly ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 8:42 AM

Damn those corrupted cookies! They ought to be put away! :D Great flower, thanks! :)

Is it possible that the site doesn't alert you if cookies have been turned off for the site (or their browsers have been instructed to ignore them?) I accidentally told mozilla to ignore any pictures from DAZ.com....ever tried browsing their site without pictures? I went for days without being able to access it, thinking that they were working on something....then I noticed no one else complained, lol. eric

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 11:54 AM

Mamba you are a genius! 8D I just checked my privacy settings and discovered that PP was blocked. I really don't know how I managed to do that but sometimes if I get hit with a lot of cookies when I'm surfing a site I hit block and remember so I guess that's what I did by accident. Most of the time you get away with doing things like that but if you permenantly block things like PP and in another case PayPal then go to use them it's a major headache till you find out what's wrong. Rcook why doesn't PP say that cookies are blocked like other sites do? That way you'd know what the problem was and wouldn't panic, like I tend to do. lol 8) Catlin

rcook ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 6:52 PM

Catlin, a website has no idea when your browser is not accepting a login cookie from it. The website sends it, and what the browser does with it is under your control, not the website. :) But, I'm glad you were able to figure it out. Russell

catlin_mc ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 11:29 PM

It's just that when I go to places like Yahoo and have blocked their cookies it tells me that I'm not accepting them. But I'm sure your as glad as I am that it's not a fault with the coding. 8) Catlin

I think it is possible to detect...I remember doing some digging in php and http...and there were some functions that you could call that gave you a lot of real generic info about an end user's machine. It might not have been the most detailed set of data, but Browser version (which is often mis-interpreted for mozilla fans), OS as well as Java and cookies enabled (or not) were also part of the list of return values. I don't remember where these routines actually got the info, so it might not be 100% reliable, but there are some methods for getting the info. Of course, the little database site I put together simply has a disclaimer that cookies must be enabled or else:) It's good to be god (even if it is only for a very puny little database driven web site:) eric

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sat, 15 November 2003 at 6:27 AM

Can't you just have a PProTest cookie, query it when the user arrives to see if it has a value, then set a new value and query again - if it is missing or still has the old value the user is blocking cookies, if the new value has been set they are allowed?

rcook ( ) posted Sat, 15 November 2003 at 10:44 AM

There probably are ways to figure it out by probing the users machine with test cookies and such ... but I'd really rather not, and I'm sure our members would agree. :) Personally, I despise sites that want to set all kinds of cookies on my machine, that's why we don't do that on PoserPros. Just a simple login cookie is all we use. And all membership sites need cookies enabled to be able to track your login from page to page.
