Subject: Some light on terrains and lattices...

This is mostly for those who are new or are having trouble with terrains and lattices looking funky on import....

Above is a lattice object, I have imported without selecting a resolution, the default is 128, even though the black and white PSP image was at 1600x1200,Bryce uses the default. Doesn't look so good.....

So I want to make this lattice better, so I choose to go really big and use gigantic resolution....and I want to eliminate any black or gray areas directly around the white, so I clip it, now I want to apply these changes to see if further adjustment is necessary, so I hit 'apply'.....I wait a second or two(my comp is somewhat fast)for Bryce to make the adjustments, and voila' a nice crisp lattice to work with. I don't select a res first because I don't have to, and often times don't remember to, also any changes that I make, I always hit 'apply' so that Bryce will make the adjustment on the lattice or terrain.... Hope this is useful for for you..... Sorry for the jpg compression, still trying to fix that....

Also, to note; Bryce re-sizes any pic that does not fit into its provided square dimensions (128,512,1024,etc). So pics that are not square AND do not match the given dimensions, will be re-sized to fit upon opening in the terrain editor. So, to get the clearest transfer from pic to terrain, work originally in square dimensions while matching the 512, 1024, pixel dimensions. If you can't do that, resizing the image before brigning into Bryce can also help in pixel clarity, although this isn't always needed to get a good terrain. Just FYI. AS

I make the adjustment when I'm in the scene, by elongating on the x axis before tilling it up, most of my stuff isn't square to start with...and it's easier than resizing stuff to fit...just lazy I guess...;]

Plenty of time for sleep when we're dead. Or when our computers are rendering... (same thing?!?!) Good deal, Zhann, it seems that source res has been a major function lately, and I'm glad so many people are getting under the hood a bit with this great program...

Also Zhann, when you get lattices that give kinda flat edges and you want a rounsed out type, hit dampen once or twice in that menu, it will soften the picture, and round out the "rails" of the fancy part of the lattice. I'm pulling out a pic now from Bryce that shows some differences in exporting...one sec

Ok, this is what I came up with last night. as far as 3ds lattices and terrains go. The first one is a lattice never exported, the other 3 are the same one after being exported as 3ds and reimported. The second one, was made using the other option in the grid triangulation box, at full amount of available poly's. (slider all the way to the right) The third and fourth are duplicates of each other, made using the grid triangulation option, and max alowed poly's..(slider all the way to the right..) The third one was not smoothed in the Edit menu of the eds, and the fourth one was... I really dont' see mych difference at that poly count, between 3 and 4....other than it took my pc about an hour to smooth the 4th one... *grumbles* Jen

Quest ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 4:30 PM

Ah yes, so because things come into Bryce as squares I usually resize the canvas in Photoshop of my grayscale bitmap by making either the width or the height equal to one another before importing into Bryce.

Zhann ( ) posted Thu, 20 November 2003 at 1:12 AM

Well, Amapi and Truespace both refused to import the Bryce 3ds and obj files that I wanted to thin the polys on, so I'll keep trying till at least one imports them. I'm also trying to import the exported terrains and lattices into Vue, they should but I'm getting an 'unspecified error'. I can, however, import Vue exported terrains (.obj format) into Bryce no problem. I really like Vue's terrain editor, you get side view as well as top view.

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Thu, 20 November 2003 at 1:52 AM

Zhann, you blaspheme.... I've enver had a problem thinning polys out in Ray Dream Studio, or Rhino, but Amorphium has NO control over such things, and exports any morphed shape out with 16,000 polys.

Zhann ( ) posted Thu, 20 November 2003 at 2:10 AM

Ooops, did I say Vue, uh, it was temporary insanity, I swear...;] Yeah, I have Vue too, I actually started in Vue and then switched to Bryce..... and Vue's terrain editor is kinda cool, I've created some great terrains in Vue then import into Bryce. I have both because I need to test my store stuff in both before it goes to the marketplace. Bryce will always be my true love.....but this polycount thing sucks....;]

JC_01 ( ) posted Thu, 20 November 2003 at 7:50 AM

hey Zhann? in Bryce if you click on that little preview window in the terrain editor, you can adjust which angle you look at your terrain from.... it even has a lil spin button on it... for lattices, i'm always tipping it forward so i can see it from the top..lol as for poly's...I been playing with cybermesh, but i can't seem to figure it out....(think i fried my brain cells readin bout all you lush's in that other post hehehehehe...either that or in wings...LMAO) If i get this thing figured out, i'll let ya know.. but from those results up above, if you go with HIGH poly's, there looks to be no reason to smooth too.... perhaps i can find a happy medium someplace...who knows...
