Subject: The Web Ring: Updated & Improved

We have updated the Renderosity Web Ring Terms of Service (linked below), as well as changed the process for joining the Web Ring. The updated TOS more closely reflects the general site TOS, and stresses that non-art sites will not be accepted. Now, when a member submits their link, it will go into a pending state until the legitimacy of the linked site can be verified. The link is accepted or rejected based on compliance with the updated Web Ring TOS, and an automatic ebot email goes out to the member in either case. We are also going through the Web Ring to clean up non-art sites and dead end links. Lastly, we now have a script that will automatically run through the Web Ring on a regular basis and remove dead links (the link is given two chances to work in case the site is having problems the first time). We believe that all of these updates will improve the Web Ring's usefulness and legitimacy for our members. If you have questions or concerns please ask away. thanks, --Asher

I'm glad the web link is being checked for dead links. There were quite a few (and sadly, of some good sites no longer available to us). Glad to read this. Thanks!

Will the people who already have it on their site from a long time have to re-apply ? wishes not

My Site is dead at the moment, but back online with a new design in 1 week :)

Tuppence ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 3:13 PM

Hello, I am not sure where I stand on having my webpage linked to Renderosity (or is it the other way round?). I put in an application then received an email about the Web Ring, etc. being updated. Do I still wait acceptance? Thank you. Bye, Tuppence.

Whats about cases, when link to Ring actually is placed in Links page, not at main, first page of website?

XR666 ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 3:29 PM

and what? send every member a spam-mail-check mail? why don't you use the private message function first? and then you can ask if the e-mail-address is actual :)

Hi, i think should be better give 3 chances to the link to work, better delay a couple days for each try. -sometimes my host is not reachable (:

j-art ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 3:51 PM

hi, i am currently working on my new site, but have alredy clicked on this sponsor link thing :-) - - would be glad to be a member of this ring - but i am sure i will need 2 more weeks to bring my site online - i have a under construction introsite online and did the link at this site - so the webring-link works, but it is not already a finished site - should i wait till the site is ready, to post the link - if it is so, what have i to do to reject the sponsor link meanwhile???? --- ah, just tell me what i have to do, and i do - :-D

This is a very good thing, thank you!

The idea is great but I too wonder about the 2 tries, in case of a dead link. Is that 2 tries with 2 weeks apart or what? It would really be a bummer if your host was down for 2 days in a row and these were the days your link was checked. I have allready been kicked out once becourse my site was down for a few DAYS and eventhough I love the idea of dead link removal it should also be a possibility to have it either checked twice, with 1 or 2 weeks apart, OR make it possible for members to notify Rosity in case of problems.

"Whats about cases, when link to Ring actually is placed in Links page, not at main, first page of website?" And what about cases when a site is part of the webring, but doesn't use the webring code at all...just a simple text link back to Renderosity, instead?

Zhann ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 4:44 PM

So, if you already are a member, with a working link, do you need to re-apply to the web ring?

If you're already in the Web Ring, assuming the site is legit etc, you won't have to re-apply. We do require that you use the provided link and graphic on your site. I'll double check the exact timing of the "2 tries" script for dead sites. Good to hear feedback on that, thanks. I do know it's spaced out over days, though. If your site isn't ready yet, please wait to join the Web Ring until it's in order. Of course, it'll depend on how far along the site is. When we check a pending link, if the site looks pretty complete it will be approved, even though some additions could be made later. "Under Construction" isn't really what we want to see. The Renderosity links can go in your Links section, but it should only be a couple of clicks away from the "Front Page". Thanks for the feedback. Go Web Ring! --Asher

I didnt see this particular issue mentioned but it concerns the content my site. I've seen that the sites have to "art related", but what about sites whos primary focus isnt art? My site is mainly about my RPG as well as some PHP programming, and my site does indeed have a gallery relating to stuff in my RPG (hence the reson of me being into 3d art). I've received many visitors from the webring and just as much have many outgoing visitors to the webring according to my stats and even some people who registered.

Disciple3d ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 4:58 PM

I ran the ring code on PoserCity.com for over a year and never once showed up in the top 10 pages. But when friends launched sites who I know for a fact saw only a fraction of our traffic they made and stayed on the front page. Has the logic been fixed or can we expect the same unpredictable placements?

I joined your web ring back when I first opened my site. I cannot see where it is going to make all that much difference eh? If you want it down just unhook it. I personally don't think they are of all that much value to the website to get excited over it. flojo1944

j-art ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 5:17 PM

ok than i uncheck the sponsor link, till my site is ready :-) --- and delete the webring link from the construktion site - hope this will not be counted as my first try - looooooool - thanks for the info --- have a great day uwe

Munshine ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 5:28 PM

Is it possible to submit a second link(second site)to the ring?

Blackhearted ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 6:19 PM

what id be more interested in knowing is why certain websites remain in the top positions yet barely have any content, and havent been updated in a year. how exactly is it that they are getting so much traffic throughput to RO? (if indeed they are). do new people keep loading those same exact pages over and over again every day, then clicking the rosity referrer link? seems doubtful... are you sure theres a script that checks offsite webring referrals for unique IP addresses? or is this like the old Hot20 where people could sit there clicking their own image several hundred times and raise their view count? the whole thing just seems suspicious and improbable to me, given some of the sites that have been up there - unmoving - in the exact same position for the last two years. cheers, -gabriel

Exotica ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 8:16 PM

Ditto Blackhearted. I've noticed that also. The same sites stay at the top and yet whenever I look at them there is hardly anything there or notyhing new. It's a mystery to me just as a lot of other things around hee are. ;/

HandspanStudios ( ) posted Wed, 19 November 2003 at 8:22 PM

Is there a way to include the referer number from other links on our sites, if we also have the webring on the front page? My site has a lot of links to my products here for example, in addition to the webring. I am not the greatest at html so it may be a stupid question, but how would I do that and is it ok to do that?

~blinks~ I am confused this thread has gotten so much attention but the thread in the poser forum concerning a removal from the ring...hasnt gotten the attention from a mod or rep from renderosity yet? ~sighs~ sorry but if it is shown that the thread "disgusted" is accurate..and a site was removed with out cause and with accusations...well needless to say from that thread many buyers already say they wont buy here....add one more to the list if it is shown to be accurate.

Is there a simple way to check if I'm in the ring. When I try to reach additional webring links from my code page all I do is get connected to renderosity and nothing loads. What is the expected turnaround to be added?

odeathoflife ( ) posted Thu, 20 November 2003 at 1:25 AM

Darkelegance, I was removed from the web ring around 3 weeks ago with no explination...and my site is all poser all the time....The logo is still there and it still works but I am no longer a part of the loop, I signed up again today but if this one doesn't work then I will not care one way or another, I just like being able to get here from myhome page.

aggelos ( ) posted Sun, 23 November 2003 at 7:01 AM

I have attepted to list my site, but I give up. Unless someone here know's how to get the damned html to work right on a geocities site? Geocities apparently will not allow me too "cut and paste" the code in. So I cannot seem to get it to work right. And when I manually enter the text code, the image is all screwed up, off center, or here and there all over the page. So I have just put the banner up, and made it a link to rosity. I hope that is ok. Any help would be appreciated.

Site Admin

It is based on how many members are referred within a time period, how many overall members you have sent, and how many visitors you have sent. So if your site is one that is mainstream traffic Or you link to the webring in prominent pages, then you can keep your listing within the top group. It does not account for new content just what is being referred. thanks tammy
