Subject: "insufficient disk space" message AGAIN!!

JoeBlack ( ) posted Sun, 23 November 2003 at 4:20 PM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 4:17 AM

I have 1Gb of ram, and a 40gb hard drive, split into 5 partitions. Poser is in its own partition, which has 5.37gb free. I'm using Poser 4.0.3, and the memory update. I've set virtual memory to a maximum of 800mb in C: partition, the page file is on C drive only. I don't want half my hard drive eaten up by page files! I'd just like to know what virtual memory settings would be adequate to stop Poser giving me these ridiculous "insuffient disk space" errors when I try to render. My images are never more than 800x800 100dpi, and yet Poser has a problem with them! Sometimes I can render 30 images one after the other without problems; the next minute it won't render at all. I just don't get it! Is it a stupid bug in Poser or are my settings wrong? I remember BigRedKane saying he has 12Gb of virtual memory and he still gets this error, and it leads him to think its a problem with Poser. I, like him, emailed curiouslabs, but never got a reply. And that's why BRK has the problem. There is a full explanation on Curious Labs FAQ page concerning this error. Hint: It involves setting the VM to smaller values, not gigantuous megavalues. Curious Labs -> Support -> Technical Support -> Top FAQs -> fourth question from the bottom

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.

OK, thanks, guess I should have checked those FAQs, but all to often they don't address problems I have. I'll try modifying the VM settings accordingly, tho I hardly consider 800x800 100dpi huge images. JoeBlack

You're dividing a 40GB hard drive into 5 partitions? Ouch! I have a 30GB hard drive for Poser 4 alone, and it's almost full. I'm having troubles using Poser. You really should continue getting one hard drive exclusively for Poser. Then take that 40GB hard drive, and make one partition for the whole drive. If you're working with graphics, you need more room, not less. You lose lots of efficiency when you divide a "small" hard drive into so many partitions.

I have 1 gig ram, one drive for Poser-D that is 80 gigs and the C-drive is 20. I still have that message once in a while. Usually when I have too many folders in Poser. The other is C drive when it gets too filled, will bring up the error. I think I should have had them installed opposited. But I'm goung to move stuff I don't use to D to store since I have tons of room there. I hate messy with the memory, seems like if I do that I mess it up worse. Good luck.

To answer your question: there is no answer: it is a known bug in Poser. You can have a 200G disk with only Poser, but if you render beyond its memory limit, you will get this error. CL suggests all kinds of advanced "techie" solutions, but none of them really work... except that it will keep you buys by changing your VM settings, re-booting your PC, and restarting Poser. My suggestions: 1) Render the scene in Poser 5. It has slightly better memory management than P4. 2) Quit Poser, re-load the scenem and then Render. Sometimes the build-up of unused texture maps takes up memory. 3) Reduce the size of your texture maps. Do you really need to use a 4000x4000 body map on a character that's wearing a jacket and jeans? 4) JoeBlack- You don't say what OS you're using, but if it's Windows 98, then give it up. Upgrade to Win 2000 or XP, then see what happens. It is KNOWN that Windows 98 and Poser do NOT work well together. Finally, always keep in mind that Poser's error messages come from the Macintosh environment. This means that you can not "allocate more memory" (as an error message tells you to do) and that the "insufficient space" message is, basically, a lie.

I rarely get that message since moving Poser to its own hard drive. If I do, it's time to defrag the hard drive, and the message goes away.
