Subject: Dumb questions

I'm a poser newbie, and although the saying goes that there are no dumb questions, I've discovered a few to which I don't have answers. One is that I tried to use a prop I downloaded from the Poser Free Stuff. On my Mac G4 it was given the title download.ez. Poser has a number of categories for files for importing stuff. I tried all of them. I also read what they said in the manual. I think the prop in question should be in the category of Poser documents, but when I used that option, it would not list the file in the window for me to select.

Try changing the name to whatever.obj; if that doesn't work, it may be a zip or sit file, change the name to whatever.zip and see if you can unzip it (with stuffit).

heyas; download.ez is the name of the page the downloads are on. it seems somehow your browser has downloaded the web page (actually a cgi script, i believe) instead of the file you were trying to get. try downloading it again.

Thanks! I don't know what Internet Explorer's story is, but when I tried downloading with Netscape Navigator, it gave the file a name that ended with zip. I couldn't get that to import either. Dave referred to unzipping it with 'stuffit.' Any info on this utility would be appreciated.

FYI, I found stuffit with a simple web search, and downloaded the shareware. Ironically I needed to use Internet Explorer to download it-- Netscape Communicator probably would have worked, but Alladin's navigator instructions weren't applicable to it. So now I've got a folder with all the instructions for the prop in question, and hopefully it'll be smooth sailing...

Old versions of IE, like 3.x, had a bad habit of trying to download CGI scripts rather than having them run.

Hokay, I thought I was done here, but I'm as stumped as ever. I read the instructions for the costumed piece, and moved the different files to the folders the instructions said. But when I went into Poser, the piece was not there. I tried using import, but it could not see the files in question. For reference, here are the instructions that were provided: Installation: Place the loincloth8mapped.obj and .rsr files in: Poser 4RuntimeGeometriesloincloth Place the P4W Loincloth.cr2 and .rsr files in: Poser 4RuntimeLibrariescharacterNew Figures Place the texture bitmaps in: Poser 4RuntimeTexturesSphere I tried the same procedure with another costume piece to, with the same results.

If it is a zip any you are on a mac you need to change the file types. There is a utility in the utilites section of free stuff to do that, I think.

joezabel ( ) posted Sat, 26 August 2000 at 8:59 AM

Kevin-- Actually I've learned (as a result of this thread) how to use Stuffit Expander to convert the zip files. But when I put the components in the folders as instructed, it didn't do any good. I followed your suggestion to check out the free stuff utilities section. I found something called Macinstaller that may be the answer. However, I can't get it to work! It installs itself, it has a set of instructions, it brings up the dialog window, but the dialog window doesn't let you follow the instructions-- most of its buttons are protected. I may try to contact the fellow who created the utility, he may be able to help. Oh well...

Well, if you feel comfortable playing with resedit I have a list of the poser file types in my poser faq. www.kzin.org/poser/faq/faq-p2.htm

Geekholder ( ) posted Sat, 26 August 2000 at 1:11 PM

In the freestuff is a utility by MartinC called MacConverter, which can take care of just about any PC<->Mac Poser file conversion tasks. You should drop all of the files from the zip onto MacConverter first, and let it do its thing, then put them in their respective folders, and then the props should be useable in Poser.

Thanks, Kevin and Geekholder. To tell you the truth, I suspect I may not have installed Poser properly in the first place. There are instructions in the manual specific to Macintosh that I didn't notice until I'd already launched the install. I didn't run into any problems for the first week, so I thought I was ok. But ever since I've tried to install the extra software that came with it, and the Zygote cd I got in the mail, I haven't had much luck. I've even had some problems with native Poser figures, such as the male trousers and slacks-- it says it can't find my texture or bump map, things like that. I'm considering uninstalling it and reinstalling from the cds, this time following the instructions. Macconverter might help me out too, although everything I've worked with so far is supposedly Mac compatable. It's a pain in the butt, but Poser is definitely worth it!

im running on PC and it is one of the worst running aps i've ever had. its been on three comps and wont work smooth on any of them it locks up it locks you out of it. it gets fickele as ot what files it runs it has been reinstalled weekly even dailey it hates PhillC's MMonroe file(maby those refs to files and texs placed in drives or dir on his which arent there on mine have something to do with that) i have a utility dir that is two screens long and well used. with poserloader and p3do pluss cr2edit being used to get the pieces straight to run for a day or two allover itr seems worth it's trouble except fot that tatoo of the s.n. on my hand from righting it there so mutch when it works i like what it dose

The biggest thing about poser? it's case sensitive.... the funny thing about windows? it doesn't like directory names in all caps... the solution? Get Cr2Editor from free stuff... and modify the directory names so they match what the directories are... Get to know and love Cr2Editor.. it's possibly your best Poser friend... (this is not an advert.. nor am I compensated for the plug but it's saved me a number of times) ) Cheers,
