This is just a quick description of how I made the grass for my latest pic, URL up above. Had to keep a certain new years resolution, so thats why there's no army skulking in it ;)

Each bit of grass is a 2d transmapped pict object. Texture and trans map ^. I wanted slanted grass, like what you get with a wind blown long grass field, so I skewed everything over a bit.

Next was to load the grass pict object in and then multireplicate the hell out of it, and then use the randomize function to randomly position it all over the field. This got rid of any repition that may come about from the use of replicated grass pics.

After this, the grass objects were dropped onto the terrain and the render was done. Here's a partial render. Once the render was done, you'll notice that there'll be gaps in the grass where the 2d pict objects just didn't group after the randomize function. To fill these in, I used a clone brush (Photoshop) of other parts of the field - but its important to use a part of the field from the same "depth" in the picture to clone/fill each particular empty area up with (hope that makes sense).

End result after cloning is this.

Thanks so much. The best result I ever got was from lots of random noise on a terrain. The blades were always straight, the object was massive, and the shadows too deep. This is a great solution!

Yeah I used to use the random noise on a terrain method, but was never really happy with the results - the grass always looked just a bit too spiky/alien for my liking. To make the terrain/noise grass look less harsh and spiky, I once gave the texture on the terrain/noise a high frequency grass shaped transparency map - it "softened" the grass up that way and made it look a lot less spiky/hard (but watch those render times blow up). Anyways, glad to be of some help.

Iv'e been playing with images today,and getting very successful at making grass now.Experimented with a moon and clouds I painted.Then made a 2D picture object of my foot LOL.Works.Thanks for twigging me on to this.
