I think the power of terragen is it's renderengine, but off course the entire program has got his own look. You could imitate the way of mapping (height distribution and stuff like that) in the vue material edditor You could import terragen terrains into vue... but the atmosphere and renderengine is the most important so I have to agree with Gebe after all: use terragen for a terragen look. Another idea that is used is to import a terragen render as background and use vue to add 3d object like plants and rocks in the foreground.
I don't want to start a religious war. Fact is that Vue does very good renders for near to mid-range distance. For far away landscape Terragen does a wonderful job. It certainly lacks vegetation and Poser import and... What I try to do is a Terragen like landscape and then add vegetation, buildings, characters,... Vue seems to be a good choice for that. I search for hints how to do this distant landscapes with Vue. Importing as background is one solution, but you have to take care, that the background fits to your Vue render and I don't want to learn working with Terragen. I saw one or two renders that looked like Terragen and they were done in Vue. Just looking for someone who gives me the direction to a basic set of settings in Vue. Anyway I'll start working on that today and maybe I will release a tutorial on that if someone is interested.
You might go back to the images in the Vue gallery that you mention look like Terragen to you, and IM the artists who posted them for any tips. Most people are happy to respond and offer any info on how they achieved a particular look in renders, sharing techniques, etc. Remember, not all folks who post in the gallery come by the forum!

Well, my point of view on this matter is... "Terragen like landscape" is nothing but ONLY land, sea & sky, that is why they look different! That is why it's I think this is a handicap software, it creates ONLY beautiful no-mans-lands. You can achieve that in Vue at no time and very easily. The problem presists somewhere else ... after you create "terragen like landscape" in vue, you have so many options of vegitations and objects, you start adding them in your scene. And before you know your "terragen like landscape" becomes "vue like scenery"! Look at "kenwas"s gallery (the link above), I'm sure terragen artists would die to do these kind of landscapes. Thanks nish ! I didn't know that gallery. "The Natural Bridge" is one of the most realistic Vue landscapes I have ever seen. After using Vue for a long time, I would add for Tintifax to keep in mind the issue of scale. This is what I believe gives a lot of images a 'Vue' look vs a 'Terragen' look. It is easy to overlook the scale of textures, scale of fog and haze, scale of mountains in the background. You will have to get all of these right and balanced to have the right look. Use a camera with a wide angle so that your clouds appear more detailed. Use high definition terrains (512x512 and above) with good height maps for a more realistic effect. Use something in the foreground to give a good sense of scale to the whole scene. The power of Vue (and also the difficulty) is that all of these settings can be applied independently, whereas Terragen takes care of a lot of things automatically.

Just saw some awesome Terragen landscapes in the gallery. Just want to make landscapes in Vue which look 'terragenish'. Some people already tried this, but I would really get some hints how to go there. Tuts or hints are all appreciated. What is the secret of Terragen? Is it the hires terrains, the textures or the render engine? How can I achieve such a look with Vue? Thanks for the help in advance - Walter
