Subject: FS largest in the known universe?

Nance ( ) posted Fri, 13 February 2004 at 3:24 PM · edited Mon, 25 November 2024 at 2:05 AM

With FS going to hit 10,000 links this week, I got to wondering. I've seen R'city described as one of the largest sites for free 3D related downloads, but I'm really not aware of any site even close to this number. Am I overlooking or forgetting another contender for the title "largest"?

Uh... What's FS? Really... I don't KNOW. Not trying to be a smartass here.

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Free stuff.

There are a lot of things worse than dying, being afraid all the time would be one.

yup, sorry, was asking about Renderosity's FreeStuff.

You are forgetting 3dcafe... which is pretty huge. PFO used to be big. PropsGuild, likewise. It has been a while since I've been to 3dup and some of the other sites. There are texture sites with thousands of textures. If some major league twitbrain hadn't wiped out 3dcommune's free stuff a year or so ago, it would be a contender. Many of the regular modelers there didn't simply reupload... they freshened the models and made new stuff. It has made an excellent recovery. Morphworld had about 300 breast morphs for Posette (well, ok, maybe not quite that many) as well as dozens and dozens and dozens of other morphs and stuff. Traveler has been even busier over at RDNA. There are sites such as Schlabber's with all his poses, but I'm not sure if he keeps thousands hanging around still accessible via 1 front page. Carolly

Nope, haven't forgotten any of those also excellent sites. Just that the number of free files on most are not even on the same order of magnitude. I also would have guessed 3dcafe to be the closest, but a quick count of the real 3d related free files (meshes, textures, & plugins but excluding the duplicate .dxf files and the non-3d stuff: web tools, ads, games sounds&photos, fonts, etc.) came out to around 3200 files. I fully realize its hard to suggest an apples-to-apples comparison simply from a gross file count, but with less than 1/3 the number of files, it can't really even be said to be a close second. Even with all the non-3d files, its still considerably smaller than FreeStuff at R'osity. (... and I didn't really count all that, just pasted the lists of files into a spreadsheet and let it do the counting) No prizes, just trivia really, but with the impending ten-thousandth post here, it feels like a notable milestone which I think merits a degree of recognition combined with a hearty "atta-boy" and sincere thanks to the folks, both here now, and in the past, whether out in front or behind the scenes, who made it happen & have kept it rolling right along. You've made it a fun ride so far. Cheers!

How much of the free stuff on Rosity is still active, some of the older ones have been pulled and you get the red X images also! :)

There is also the point that if you eliminate the so-called "duplicate" formats from 3dcafe, you need to do that here as well! There are many files posted in both Bryce and Poser versions. You will also have to trim off the PhotoShop brushes and the Fractals and the other stuff from the total if you trim them from 3dcafe (or any other site). Comparing bushels of cherries AFTER you've cherry-picked them only works if the same standard is held throughout. Carolly

None of the files are hosted here. It is basicly just a search engine so not sure what the hub-bub is.
