Subject: P5 SR4, No Depth Shadows. Help!

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sun, 29 February 2004 at 2:54 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 3:29 PM

Ray traced shadows work fine. I don't have Depth shadows. Any hints out there? I reinstalled P5 to see if that would work, Nope, Nada, Zip. I didn't have to put my serial no. in, must not have deleted completely, any hints on that too. This is the only thing I have a problem with in sr4. I was trying to do a finished render, forgot how bad things look without shadows, makes me wonder why so many images in the gallery don't use them. I don't want the raytrace shadows. Thanks for any and all help

I'm having the same problem. It is only in the firefly renderer and it is only with lights that I add. The default infinite light work fine. If I make the default infinite light spotlights the depth mapped shadows continue to work for those lights only. The depthmapped shadows continue to work in P5's P4 renderer. At least I'm not the only one seeing this. Thanks, Jeff

Well that kind of sucks. I set my defalt with one light and nothing else in the scene. Guess I'll restart in factory settings and see what happens. Thank-you for the heads up.

Funny, I didn't have that problem...

I just submiited the question to CL.

I cannot repeat this in either of of My P5 installs, and it's driving me nuts! Can you do a search in your Poser installation for shadow.tmp files and see if you have any that might be left over? Sr2 and earlier (and Sr3 with animations) tended to leave the files in place, and they interfere with the shadow map function in Sr4.

I do not have any poser related temp files on my system.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sun, 29 February 2004 at 5:19 PM

Would I need to look through the whole drive for .tmp files or just in poser. If I find them and delet, would I need to re-install everything again?

Tashar59 ( ) posted Sun, 29 February 2004 at 5:59 PM

I just thought of this. Could a saved cloth room file cause this? I'm drawing at straws here. What should I do for a complete clean uninstall. Maybe I have missed something.

ynsaen ( ) posted Sun, 29 February 2004 at 6:53 PM

The tmp files to delete do not delete automatically and are "marked" so they will not be cleaned using most tools -- they have to be manually snagged. They usually reside in one of the folders in the Poser file itself, typically imageIOplugins or prefs. Shadow.tmp is only part of the file name, as well, and tmp is not the end extension (though I may be wrong there), but they can be found searching on that term

As already mentioned in another thread: I've had this shadow problem one time after installing sr4. I then switched between firefly/p4 renderer. Rendered. Turned shadows off/on/off. Changed "Dist End" settings to some value and back - and suddenly depthmap shadows in firefly worked. And until now there are no more problems. (Tested with a lot of other old scenes and new scenes) So my guess would be, that somewhere burried is a program flag which didn't get set correctly when updating and because of my "switching" I finally "activated" this flag. (From a programmers point of view this isn't so unusual.) But anyway, this is only wild guessing... ;-)

I have no files with shadow or tmp in the file names in those folders.

steve_g ( ) posted Sun, 29 February 2004 at 8:24 PM

I have the same problem with SR4 on Win XP... no shadow tmp files, default lights with firefly work with Depth Shadows. Newly created lights do not cast depth shadows with firefly. I've sent a note to Curious Labs.

Anyone heard from CL yet? I have not. I had to go back to sr3 to use the shadows. Bit of a drag, sr4 is faster.

steve_g ( ) posted Tue, 02 March 2004 at 7:25 AM

I still have not received a reply from CL. I just reran the sr3 exe on my system over the sr4 install to get back to sr3 also... Probably not the best way to get sr3 back but everything seems to work. Next time I'll back up before intalling a new SR!
