THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

I saw someone was asking the other week whether it was possible to do architectural modelling in Bryce - well this is something I put together over the last couple of weeks. It was supposed to be a 'quick and dirty' model of a big house for the background of a pic, but it kind of grew out of control. It is ALL made of primitives, with the single exception of the balustrade uprights, which are freebies from Ysvry ( http://home.deds.nl/~mp/elf/elf.htm). I find Bryce very comfortable to do this sort of model in (to me the interface is much more friendly than Max) but the downside is that you end up with a massive file (90 Mb without textures) that you can't export to other applications. I'd love to put it in the freestuff, but it's much too big, and anyway it has Ysvry's stuff in it. I've set myself a project to remodel it in Max, so if I succeed I will post it up somewhere for download.

Whoa.

Out of control is right!! That's fantastic for a single Bryce model.

Thatll shut up a few of those "real modelling apps" snobs. Its not what youve got, its what you can do with it. My compliments, it`s amazing.

bigbadelf ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 2:13 PM

I'll bet there's furniture in those rooms, too, right? ;o) Very impressive.

pertm ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 2:29 PM

This looks great. I have been thinking about doing a building in Bryce. Mostly so far my attemt on buildings have been castle types, maybee I should try something like this.

draculaz ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 2:49 PM

okay... THAT is amazing drac

Erlik ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 3:28 PM

Wheeee! Incredible! If it's any consolation, a model that detailed would be almost as big in other applications that I know of. If not bigger.

Freakin excellent modeling work..

I've done smaller buildings, but that is just insane! I wouldn't have the skill or the patience to attempt such an undertaking. Bryce rules!

for some free stuff i made
and for almost daily fotos

rickymaveety ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 5:44 PM

I love architectural modeling in Bryce as well, although I haven't yet tackled a building that large. Mine have all been Victorial houses. THAT is a major effort.

Could be worse, could be raining.

lets see some wires of it. k

Aye, I find it totaly comfortable as well, compared to Lightwave or even Rhino! But that's a very complex and detailed model you've got there, amazing that you could keep it all together... I can't wait to see a background for it.

Great job. this looks like a classic institution.tongue.gif

MuddyGrub ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 10:43 PM

Insane modeling! How long does it take that baby to save?

kimpe ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 10:53 PM

Can it be broken down into sections and merged back in Bryce? Say three sections, that would help with DL.

Ardiva ( ) posted Mon, 01 March 2004 at 11:07 PM

Very very nice, judy!!

Well they've all said it better, but I totally agree with all these comments.

MuddyGrub, it takes about 10 minutes to save without textures, but with textures it takes, I'm ashamed to say, two and a half hours. I've tried splitting it up, which reduces the save time, but if you want to use the whole model in a scene you have to merge it in and then delete it after you save the image, if you want a realistic save time for the rest of the scene. I also split it into four parts and saved them as .obps, but the smallest is still five and a half Mb. I've attached some wireframes for Wildman2. Sorry about the colour, the default grey doesn't seem to pick up very well on the screen print. PS: I forgot to say, the model is based on Stourhead House in Wiltshire, southern England.

chohole ( ) posted Tue, 02 March 2004 at 4:28 AM

I knew it seemed kind off familiar. I dread to think how many cubes you have in there. Mine went over 500 with just a simple georgian house (sort of based on Rangers Lodge in Hyde Park London).

Fantastic modelling kind of reminds me of the old naval college in Greenwich. Real classic architecture, bet you'll have fun with textures on this one.....

Chohole, another reason it might look familiar is that the house was used as the model for Lady Penelope's mansion in Gerry Anderson's "Thunderbirds" (knowing that dates me, doesn't it!) Thanks to everyone for your nice comments about the model. I just wish there was some hope on the horizon for improvements to Bryce to allow it to fulfill its full potential as a serious contender to the "real modelling apps"....

Quest ( ) posted Tue, 02 March 2004 at 9:10 AM

Absolutely stunning Judy, congratulations on a superb model!

alvinylaya ( ) posted Tue, 02 March 2004 at 12:10 PM

Wow they look amazing, must be huge on the poly count. Seriously awesome work.

pertm ( ) posted Tue, 02 March 2004 at 2:42 PM

I'm not suprised over that long save time. I have a file that takes about a day to save... That file is about 200MB

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Tue, 02 March 2004 at 7:32 PM

Aye, and it's this very save-time issue which makes people say, "Bryce is useless for architectural modeling". Much as we hate to admit it, this level of boolean architecture is nearly un-animatable with Bryce, and from a production standpoint, would be useless for anything other than artist's renditions. For example, the measurements and whatnot wouldn't help a contractor much. For example, how many faces are there in the scene that are unnecessary, but still take up RAM? Bryce doesn't do true Boolean methods, it's really just a mix of "Hidden" levels, a filter. So there ar millions, if not more, polygons that are there but don't need to be. If you were to do it in Rhino or Max or something, the model would be much smaller in memory, and also in disk size and speed. But image away! Nobody's gonna stop me from making my Black Tower in real life, I love that model and it's all Bryce... (although not nearly as complex as this one...)
