Subject: So what now?

I've been keeping a close eye on the proceedings here and wondered one thing, if the community cannot stay here or doesn't want to, where do we go? I feel like the community is going to break up into dozens of smaller websites making it much harder for us to keep on working together. Anyway, here's hoping it all gets sorted out. See you later my friends. Jody

i am afraid of that also. Breaking this good ambiance we had here will be bad. I hope someone will come out with a good site. I am ready to participate, not as an artist for sure. Claude

Right now, people seem to be defecting to renderotica.com. My understanding is that Ed and Jack are working on a new site, using the software that they had planned to run Renderosity with after the zygote/renderosity/curious Labs merger... After it's open, there will probably be ann anouncement on renderotica - and at that point, most everybody's probably going to move to the new site. At least, that's what I'm planning on doing.

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 2:10 AM

I've been through this twice already and I don't think there will be any new sites. The cost is just too large. -JH.

Jeff won't the new admin be burden with the cost to run this site too? I'm worried there will not be anyone interested in taking over because of the price to run this huge site. Will the store stay open or move with the previous staff?

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 2:43 AM

As far as I know the store will remain open for those who wish to sell their products. I have no part in that. The company that owns this site will run it. The cost of this site has always fallen to EdgeNet, even when Jack was here (and Willow before him). I don't know who may manage the site in the future...it IS a big task. -Jeff

Thanks for the information. It helps to have someone answering all our inquiries.

Excuse my ignorance, but while I can understand the site costing a lot of money, I cannot understand that it can't be profitable. And if it's not making money, why are people fighting over it? It has no real assets, as members retain the rights in all their work. It is simply a popular cyber meeting place with oodles of marketing potential that has largely been ignored. I feel as if we're all being sucked into an argument that has nothing to do with us ordinary members. Our comments simply go towards fixing the price. (So far I would say that the price must have dropped considerably.) As a member I have had fantastic service from Jack and his team and I trust and respect them. But I'm not looking for a political battle. I didn't ask about internal politics when I joined this community, I simply found a place that really seemed to cater for my needs. This time it will be no different. The fact that there has been no word from Edgenet on this issue (after all' they own the place) will certainly add to my current conviction that Jack and Ed will be a better bet in the future. But it remains to be seen if they can get it together. Frankly, I'm a bit pissed off for having to make this kind of choice, but I guess, like all of the other ordinary members, I'm just a speck of dust on a corporate agreement. Berge

I don't really know anybody too well yet, but it really steamed me that what I considered a host...isn't that what Edgenet essentially is? A server, website hosting company? Kind of akin to a landlord...anyway: I know I'd be pretty pissed if I had a popular website, and my server suddenly decided to come in and take over it. I would think them unethical, and pack up my toys and go home...move elsewhere. This is what I gathered was the situation...all politics aside. That edgenet had no place coming in here and stirring things up, and taking over, and deciding who runs what. They are the host. They own the domain name, and the software that was liscenced out for the maintainance of this site, but that doesn't mean they have the right to say who operates and maintains the site. Because it was operating at a loss?...if it was such a huge loss for them to keep Renderosity up then why weren't we booted ages ago? Charity? I don't buy it. What are the motives of a landlord who let's you slide on the rent? There has to be ulterior motive unless he/she is part of the family. As far as I know, Edgenet has never been directly involved with the community here, or been a participant. And what's with all the personal politics? A bit sophmoric don'tcha think?

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 12:20 PM

EdgeNet is not just the Host or the landlord, they owned this site before Jack & Ed made an offer to purchase/manage/lease it (your pick). They signed a contract and failed to live up to it. They were allowed to continue under altered arrangements. All of this is a private matter for both parties involved.

duanemoody ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 1:03 PM

All of this is a private matter for both parties involved. As I understand it we provide the content that drives this site. Exactly how is it not our business? If you're not comfortable posting the answer feel free to email me in confidence.

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 1:15 PM

Contracts are private is what I mean.

Momcat ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 2:32 PM

Perhaps this could be made clearer, since this situation is effecting all of us...our business or not, if the facts (*=emphasis, not sarcasm), the complete facts, and nothing but the facts, were made available to the community. Namely, terms...numbers mean nothing to me...those are certainly none of my business, but I believe it would make it easier for some of us to make up our minds for ourselves, if we knew the terms/history of edgenets involvement with renderosity. No politics, no snide remarks, just facts. I don't think this is an unreasonable request considering the mess this has become. I think it would do more good for the community than harm to edgenet to make this information available.

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 2:44 PM

I would say post and interact where you are happiest. I'll do my best to make this a nice place to be. -Jeff H.

Momcat ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 3:08 PM

Thank you Jeff, I think I'll do just that. This isn't a very happy place right now, but I suspect it will die down in a few weeks. I am taking no sides, and I will contribute wherever I damn well feel like. Hopefully, Renderosity will survive, and so will Jack and Ed's place...whenever it gets up and running. All this really means, when it comes right down to it, is that there will be even more resources available. Pardon my profanity, but: FUCK POLITICS! LET'S POSE! PS: Any ideas as to why it's taking so long to load pages here these days? Things started slowing down sometime last week and it's steadily getting worse (yes, I cleaned my cache)

JeffH ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 3:21 PM

There are hundreds of people accessing this site now, that's why it's so slow. Normally there isn't this much activity.

bloodsong ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 5:32 PM

heyas; momcat; i can tell you from experience, we (the 'peons' ;) ) will NEVER know the details of what the dip is going on. it is a private contract negotiation deal thing, and we're not involved parties. also from experience, i think it is best to withhold judgement one way or the other, until things become clearer. (they probably won't, but once the chips are done falling, you can see the new pattern and decide from that.)

Momcat ( ) posted Mon, 18 September 2000 at 5:51 PM

That's what I'm finally realizing. It's all business and personal
politics that have been taken waaaaay beyond sophmoric, all the way
to schoolyard...see IsaacNewtons image? How long till we get down
to preschool level and nobody knows how to share anymore? I'm done
judging...I judge this to be a *R.*P.I.T.A. and I'm not longer
going to participate in it. I've got better things to do. It's nice
to know there are still some adults here though. >^_^

JeffH, I think Jack and Ed stated that before all of this happened, they were talking to Zygote and Curious Labs about "evolving" the site. You talk about cost to set up a new site. It sounds like they already have financial backing. So why do you think it is not going to happen??
