Is there any explanation for the release and subsequent removal of SR4.1? Have I totally hosed P5? Visque I cant wait to hear this.

SamTherapy ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 2:49 PM

Hmmm, I think I'll wait before installing it, in that case. I'm not too pleased with 4.0 so I don't want to compound the problems.

There is a download still available - was it down for a bit? I got it a few hours ago but the link is still there.

visque ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 3:21 PM

4.1 was there... gone... replaced with the old 4... all gone... old 4 back... and now 4.1 makes its return (or something like that). I've wasted more time today with these patches and trying to determine what's going on. I'll just put it on the Poser 5 "waste of time" tab.

It was weird. They took it down for awhile, including the notice on the front page. There were *no* Poser 5 SRs at all available on the CL web site. Not even the figure updater. One person said they saw SR4 go back up in its place. Then SR4.1 went back up.

And isn't it strange that they haven't announced this update? They didn't announce a previous one, either, apparently...

See the link for the continuing saga. ;-)

Sounds to me like a typical snafu: somebody at C.Labs said it was OK to go with "this" version, then they realised that that was the wrong version, then they realised they'd missed out on some version control, then management steps in and says "cut the whole thing entirely 'til you get it sorted out - and do it now!", so they slowly, and much more carefully, put SR4.1 back together again and restore it over SR4.0. Only they forgot to change the HTML page, so it still reads SR4. Or maybe it didn't happen like that at all..:-)) Cheers, Diolma (BTW: "SNAFU" - "Situation Normal, All Fouled Up" (you can make your own substitution for "Fouled"). US military slang since at least WW2)

visque ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 3:36 PM

Diolma, I think "FUBAR" might be more appropriate.

diolma ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 3:42 PM

LOL visque: "Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition":-)) 1 is US naval slang and the other is US army in origin - but I can never remember which is which.. Cheers, Diolm

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 3:43 PM

Ack. I hope not. I really, really want a working version of Poser back. Even one that was as working as SR3.

diolma ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 3:47 PM

randym77: As I understand it, the current SR4.1 (It may still be called SR4) is the OK version, and can be downloaded and installed with only the usual amount of problems:-) However, personally, I'm going to wait just one more day... Cheers, Diolma

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 3:52 PM

If everyone waits "just one more day," no one's going to find out if there are any problems, are they? ;-) I actually downloaded and installed SR4.1 last night, and it didn't seem to do a darn thing. Maybe it was the "bad" version. Of course, maybe now my copy of Poser really is @#$%*&! up beyond all repair, and I should do a clean install anyway...

Aeneas ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 3:55 PM

So am I. I suppose I installed SR4 over SR4, and I had to rearrange the gui and see how P5 neede its code checked on the Internet once again... curious indeed... If they go on like this, no-one will install anything anymore as we will all be waiting for someone else to take the risk.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

ronstuff ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 3:56 PM

Evidently there have been a couple of versions, and the earlier download was the wrong one. You can tell by the date/time stamp on the EXE file that is inside the ZIP. The current download is dated 03/16/2004 10:01 AM the earlier one today had a date stamp 03/04/2004 and was apparently the wrong file.

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 4:28 PM

Ah. The one I installed last night was dated 3/4. The one I just downloaded has the 3/16 date. Once more into the breach...

"Fouled Up Beyond All Recognition" Some legends say that "fubar" is what US soldiers understood when German soldiers said "furchtbar" (=horrible).

SamTherapy ( ) posted Tue, 16 March 2004 at 4:45 PM

"(BTW: "SNAFU" - "Situation Normal, All Fouled Up" (you can make your own substitution for "Fouled"). US military slang since at least WW2)" I believe it was originally British Air Force slang; they were noted for their colourful phrases, for example, have you ever considered where "joystick" comes from, and why? Which is a nice continuity link with the thread by Khrys. :)

stewer: if that is how it started (and it could well be true), I bet it took the military less than 24 hours to come up with the corresponding acronym:-)) Just incidentally, how I found out about this at all was via a handbook about the PDP8 micro-processor. Many of the examples used file names like "foo" and "bar" as illustrations. There was a footnote that the origin of this was from "fubar" and I went on from there.. That was a bit of a while ago... Cheers, Diolma

I seem to have started (and conspired in) an off topic subject here. I apologise. I got carried away. Cheers, Diolma

Okay, I installed it, and it seems to work. Version number updated correctly. However, it still tries to connect to the Internet. :-P But I have shadows! Yay! And there was much rejoicing! Speed of moving around the library and such is still good. However, loading Poser seems slower, as does opening up files. With SR4, the first time you opened Poser, it was kind of slow, but subsequent times, it was really fast. That speedup for subsequent times seems to be gone now. Only been playing with it a little while (obviously), but stability doesn't seem very good. Locked up doing a render with the P4 renderer that used to be a piece of cake. Oh, well. I have shadows. At last.

However, it still tries to connect to the Internet. :-P As it should. CL only removed the online verification feature, not the part that checks for duplicate copies of Poser running simultaneously on a local network.
