Subject: Once more about postwork

I did not get any answers to my last image "throug the diamond gateway" I assume it was to little of fractal in it, that's why. I make another try. here is an image i posted to 2D Forum's monthly theme, but not in the gallery. Here the Apo is the central part, but I have put it in an 2d environment. Is my Frog King acceptable as fractal work or not? The only thing I did to the fractal was giving him eyes and 2 extra points on the crown. Here is my "King of the pond"

....and here is the original Aop

Peronally... I think this belongs in the Fractal Gallery. Mostly because the main focus of your image IS a fractal, and I very much agree with what Tresamie said in the other thread on this subject. I think your last image was also suited to the Fractal Gallery, for the same reason. Honestly, gunsan, I just don't think there are any hard and fast rules on this topic. It's more a matter of personal taste. And if there are images posted that fall into this grey area and don't actually "belong" here, they would probably still be welcomed (this is a VERY friendly community. ^_^) but might be more at home elsewhere. I dither back and forth about how much postwork to use as well, and have finally decided that if I feel the image needs it, I'll attempt it, and it STILL belongs in the Fractal Gallery. My advice? Just go with your gut.

Not a firm answer, I know, but I hope it helps.

Your earlier image seemed a little light on fractals to me, but I would not have objected to having it in the fractal gallery if that was where you felt more at home. This one is much more focused on the fractal, and it too would be fine in the fractal gallery. It's not so much the post processing as it is the artist's feeling about the image. If you think it's a fractal, post it here, IMO. I rarely do much post processing, but that's mostly because I have little skill with it! I try to do most of my work in UF, and when you look at UF, you will see that a lot of the features really are post processing! It can do layers, textures, merge modes...many of the things that people with other fractal programs would consider postwork. I hope that helps.

Fractals will always amaze me!

Thanks a lot, you helped me to understand a little more. About postwork, the only way I know is using PaintShopPro. I don't master UF at all,it seems so complicated. I have not worked so much with fractals the last seven-eight years, and the programs have been much more sophisticated during that time.

Hi Gun,

when you mastered Apo with its abstract triangles, when you mastered PSP with the layers - then there are not too many difficulties left in UF3...

The way you made the apo flame into a frog is admirable. I must admit that I would not have looked a second time at the base flame. Your imagination made a lot out of it. And the background looks nice too.

Perhaps you can frame the frog i.e. set some (Apo?) plants to his sides? Normally frogs hide behind plants... This would add more depth to your image.

The image definitely would have a good place in the fractal gallery. I am sure.

Thanks for your encouraging words Andreas, but this image was just made for fun for the 2D theme, I had never a thought to post it to my gallery (we have a lot of fun with our theme images this month in 2D) The reason I posted it here was theoretical, and I have got answers, thanks to you, Seadreamer and tresamie. Maybe I have to give UF a fair chance, but I hate reading manuals :-)

mdessureault ( ) posted Wed, 24 March 2004 at 5:13 AM

There is no manual in UF. You have a help file, but you would learn more from the official UF list. Here is the address to subscribe: ultrafractal-subscribe@lists.fractalus.com. But be warned. There are up to 50-60 messages a day. I have never seen so creative people ;-). Miche

gunsan, your frog is wonderfull, I like it very much. Your pp here is a detailed example of what I understand under final operations, adding eyes is adding a soul to the creature. IMO, it has a place in the fractal galery, because the main element IS fractal. If you have more experience in UF for example, you could make your enviroinment there. About "Trough the diamond gateway", I think if you were using bird shapes, not a sample, the effect would be better. If you have any questions, IM. Have a great day, Lisa

I agree with the above, gunsan. I think this should be in the Fractal Gallery! It's a fun image - makes me smile! Linda

I always want to see your fractal work, with or without postwork added!
If you don't feel like there is enough to justify putting it up in the Fractal Gallery, then please, put a thumbnail and link here in the Forum, so we know when you have something new.

So kind of you to say so Rosemaryr, and thanks all others for answering. I feel I am such a newbie here when i look at all wonderful fractals you show, that I feel I have not so much to contribute with, more than maybe my own way to do postwork :-)

QuietRiot ( ) posted Wed, 24 March 2004 at 12:21 PM

If I could do only half that much post work on my fractals I'd be posting them all over the place. I agree with Rosemaryr. If you're not sure, at least post a thumb and a link so we don't miss your work. It really is wonderful!

Hi gunsan I think it's great what you did with this image. It belongs in the fractal gallery! Keep up the good work! Nick
