Subject: Poser on one drive, files on another?

JenX ( ) posted Tue, 20 April 2004 at 9:56 AM · edited Wed, 06 November 2024 at 11:46 PM

I am reinstalling after reformatting (added another drive, wanted to start clean), and I was wondering. Is it possible to have Poser on one drive, and install the freebies and things I buy on another and not have to go back and forth all the time to use the files? Sorry if this has been asked before...I've searched the forum for almost three hours, and couldn't find anything. Thanks in advance for your help!! ..shadow..

Poser 5 picks up its Runtime directory from within the original installed directory. Therefore you cannot have a runtime folder anywhere else, although if you were patient enough to edit all the paths to the texture files and geometries, you could move them to a seperate drive. Not advisable though.

I figured that's how it would go. Thanks for the help, I just figured I'd ask before going ahead, lol!

Poser 5 (OS X) on the primary (boot or startup) drive can access Poser 4 runtimes on other drives, but YMMV for Windows. I don't know if Poser 5 (OS X) can access another Poser 5 directory on another drive unless you install Poser 5 on the other drive as well, which would be overkill if you ask me.

Hi there, unless I'm missunderstanding the question, yes you can install Poser5 on one HD and then have the Runtime folders on a different drive. My Poser5 installation is on my main drive C, with the old P4 & PP Runtime on my D drive, and anything I have purchased/downloaded since upgrading to P5, on my F drive (a 120 Gb HD devoted exclusively to Poser) In order to have P5 "see" the other Runtime folders, open Poser, open Figures. This will show the P5 Runtime and the "Download" Runtime (I believe that's what it's called). At the bottom screen is a "+" sign. Click on this and then find your Runtimes. Hope this helps.

Hi, what about P4? I have space problems in my main C drive and have added an external HD, I moved all these space-devouring textures and bumps into the external unit, while leaving all other libraries in C. But now, every time I load an object, I must locate EVERY texture manually in the new drive. It should be easy just to tell Poser 'look for textures in drive E (or F or G)'. Is this not possible? Anyone can help with some idea? My textures really don't fit any longer in my old drive!

No, Poser 4 only allows one runtime, which has to be in the usual place (in the Poser 4 folder).

You can hand-edit the character, prop, and hair files to look for their textures on another drive, but this has to be done for each Library file affected.

CorrectReference Pro might be able to do this for you. I'm not really that familiar with the utility.

P5's external runtimes are almost enough to make upgrading worth it, eh?

I agree, it is worth upgrading to P5 to be able to use external runtimes. Not only can you use external runtimes on other drives of the same computer but also on drives of a networked computer providing, of course both computers are running. I recently bought a new computer to which I transferred P5 but I still use runtimes on both d: and c: drives of the old computer whilst installing new items into runtimes created on the new computer. The only items I have had to install on the new computer are Daz ones. They seem to have difficulty finding the geometries of some items.

I know everyone is always very fond of bashing P5, but it has been stable here for ages. (Yeah well shame about the OS which keeps killing itself once a month.) Poser is on Drive E here (Due to the suicidal OS), the original runtime is all that is in it. I then have a "P5 Runtimes" Folder on Drive F, which has folders for V3, M3, Freak, Critters, Dragon... etc etc. Each of those contains a "Runtime" folder where I install stuff to. I then simply add those folders in P5, and hey presto - no worries. What this allows me to do is shift that runtime around to a bigger drive if I have to, it also lets me shift P5 around if I have to. (And in case you didn't know... you do not have to reinstall P5 if you stick it elsewhere and your C drive is formatted. It works just fine after a format / reinstall of C, if it sits on another drive.) I actually considered getting myself a nice firewire external drive to put P5 on. Then I can take it anywhere and even run it on the laptop without worrying about space. I've not tried it, but I bet it works.

OK, OK... I will start saving for P5. But what is that suicidal OS mentioned by Silke?
