Subject: FREE POSER 5 Get Poser 5 for FREE

d4500 ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 2:23 PM · edited Tue, 19 November 2024 at 1:28 PM

I read a post where someone wasn't sure if they should buy and/or was looking for a lower price for Poser 5. If you consider the price of a model is about $20. Therefore, 10 models would be about $200. Poser 5 has tons of models (content). Therefore at any rate and with so much content... it would be like getting Poser 5 for FREE.

Phate_ ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 2:52 PM

damn, I thought I was gonna be front row in a locked thread :(

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 3:05 PM

Honestly there are really none of the P5 models I'd pay 20$ for. They're ok but that's all. But Poser 5 itself otoh is absolutely worth the price :o)

is it april the 1st. no just looked

Yeah, but Erenyoka, you saw the new morph/texture thing with the blackeyes for Judy, didn't you?

Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.

PandaPride ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 7:41 PM

I think I put my money's worth into poser and then some! I am very happy with the money I paid for this and what I've learned from it and put into it! Free is a nice word, but life doesn't work on "free".---Essie

Lyrra ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 7:45 PM

I sure wouldn't buy Poser5 based on Judy alone :P The MayaDoll is a thousand times more useable and she's free ... shrug Judy is a lot of work to get to a useable level. The basic structure of the face is just ...weird. The cloth and the shaders do make it worth dealing with now that the lastest SR has stabilised the bloody thing.

Gareee ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 8:06 PM

Yep, and at the end of the day, look at the cost of other graphic utilities, like Photoshop, Lightwave, Bryce, Vue ect. Poser still comes out at bargain.

Poser 5 has models included? Actually, I did use the hair once. ;-)

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 9:42 PM

Lyrra, Can you put your face onto Maya Doll? And with all the new morphs, shaping her into an interesting woman is a lot easier. I prefer Don's look to the new Mike3 or any of his clones, and they cost almost as much as does Poser! Without clothes!! The kids start out with a lot of basic clothes. Does the Milboy have sneakers and socks yet? What few folks realize is that there are also themed packages on the Content CD with some very pretty stuff. Carolly

Lyrra ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 10:26 PM

well for one thing I wouldn't want to put my face on any poser figure :P Yes, the poser5 people come with a goodly amuont of basic clothing ...but I'm afraid that it's kind of stayed at that since they came out. Not a huge amount of support. Dynamic clothes made for other figures can be shoehorned onto Judy et al, which does help. Sneakers and socks? well PW has made some ..think DAZ has a set in there someplace. The cheongsam on the CD is pretty nice, and with some fiddling of the GreenSatin material renders up fairly well too

mondoxjake ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 12:09 AM

I'll give $20. for Poser5...just so I can say I tried it.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 12:51 AM

Yeah GareeeI saw it. And bought it too :o) Really makes a difference. And don't get me wrong, the P5 people are ok characters, but like saying you'd pay ANYTHING for the Poser horse? Or the cat? Come on, they're FUGLY! Sure some people have made morph packs for them that makes them anything from useable to actually GOOD. Daz has a clothing pak for the mill boys with sneakers and those converse type basked shoes. And socks and pants ect. And of course Steve has made some great clothes for him too. Yes there's some interesting stuff on the content cd, but it's not much and why is it "hidden" there? And still hardly ANYONE, including Steve, though I think he has made a few dynamic things, has made new clothes for the P5 peeps, there's a little out for Judy but I haven't seen anything for Don except I THINK someone did an armour once? On the plus side Don can wear some of Dork's clothes, but then again there isn't much out for Dork either. Seems like noone wants to play with the male characters? sigh

It's really a shame that there is all of that content that is not being used. I think that is part of what inspired me to revisit P5 to see if there was ANYTHING that could inspire folks to use what they already have in P5. I think what we have here is a catch 22 situation ... few are using the P5 models because there isn't much available for them; conversely, there won't be much more available for them because they aren't being used. I'd be willing to create some P5 stuff if I felt there was interest in it -- but truthfully interest seems VERY low right now. So ... where do we go from here?

Lyrra ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 2:05 AM

well the biggest drawback with the poser 5 people are the faces. the New morfin Mindy character has helped. The faceroom is just such a sledgehammer tool that its hard to use in useful way for most newbies. I still haven't decided wether I should just give up and post my Judy body morph set for free, or if I should try one more time to get it saleable. I'm leaning towards free .... same for the not yet made Don set With Clothing Convertor it actually is not that difficult to convert V1/2 clothes to Judy, same for Mike1/2 to Don. I mean its still a pain, but its less of a pain than say V to V3. So there's a possibility of converting existing clothing.

narcissus ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 2:38 AM

I use Poser 5 people at my office,I make 3d representations of buldings and then put people on the top. Poser 5 gives me a great variation for that, and what I like most is that all figures have their own wardrobe! The fact that Daz makes much better models does not mean that poser 5 from itself is not enough for basic needs... The way everyone expands his library depends on his needs. My personal believe is that if you want something first try to make it by yourself,if you can't then search if there is something like you need for free if there is not and your need covers the cost buy it!

EnglishBob ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 5:30 AM

In the UK, Poser 5 costs more than a lifetime subscription to PoserWorld. No contest.

who3d ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 7:53 AM

A Poserworld sub can add raytracing, material nodes, dynamic cloth and even dynamic hair as well as tons of models and textures? Grief - I'd better sign up!

EnglishBob ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 7:57 AM

Tons of models and textures, yes... That was d4500's original premise, I believe; that Poser 5 was worth paying lots of money for, just for the models you get with it. But you knew that. ;-)

Gareee ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 9:08 AM

Poser 5 does NOT cost "lots of money" Again compare it with Bryce, Vue, Photoshop, ect.

349.99 = $620 approx. It depends on your individual outlook, I suppose; but for me, something that is priced at $190 in one country and is $620 in mine, costs lots of money. Yes, I know this isn't the cheapest possible UK price - it's the comparison that stings.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 9:20 AM

The biggest drawback is perception. If you don't think anybody wants something, you don't make it, and nobody buys it... so you were right. If you do think that somebody wants it, and you make it, and lo! somebody buys it. Right again. But this is an accelerating trend. Too often people will buy something just because everybody else has it and they want to be popular too. Or they'll dis something because it is cool to be superior. Politics. Quality and usefulness and flexibility aren't as key as whether it is acceptable to the ingroup... whoever they are. If you guys make more stuff for the Poser 5 characters, they will indeed have the support they need to florish. If you don't make stuff because there is no support... well, that is a self-fulfilling prophecy if I have ever met one. Right now I have a bear of a render going on the Mac. Not because there are 2 dressed and accoutered Judys... but because Anton's Candleworks have added about 3 dozen lights and shadowcams. Not only could I NOT create this scene using V3s (not the same clothes or morphs), but it would bring my poor long-suffering beast to its knees. There is a strong need for neat stuff for these figures, even more than the fad-of-the-moment or the over-the-bleeding-edge injection models. These are basics. And you can fill a scene with them. Well, the render has finished. It isn't what I intended, but it is a happy accident. Now to figure out what happened. ;) One other thing to think about. There are more people with Poser 5 than there were last year, and that number will increase. If a critical mass of consumers has those models, surely it makes sense to provide product for them? Carolly

elgyfu ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 9:39 AM

I got Poser 5 coz I did not already own Poser 4. I have used Judy and Don (and the kids too) and do like the face room. I agree that it is a shame that they are not supported by the community - Daz refusing to do stuff has certainly not helped. The dynamic clothing option is great - sure it is time consuming but it does allow some unique looks. And don't forget the improved material handling - I am still amazed at the incredible results you can get just by messing about with this feature.

FishNose ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 10:32 AM

But EnglishBob, why on earth would one buy the boxed version? Get the online upgrade for less than half that straight from CL. :] Fish

Lyrra ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 1:09 PM

So should PW add Poser5 figure content? (Don't hit me Steve! grin)

DCArt ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 1:31 PM

If you guys make more stuff for the Poser 5 characters, they will indeed have the support they need to florish. If you don't make stuff because there is no support... well, that is a self-fulfilling prophecy if I have ever met one. Perhaps 8-). But my argument there is that Poser 5 was furnished with a great deal of content, enough so that we could have had Judy in the temple with a sword and CLOTHES 8-). In other words, there was enough clothing to start using the Poser 5 characters right off the bat. It seemed to me, when analyzing the situation, that the problem with the P5 figures wasn't the lack of clothing and accessories. There was a rocky start with P5, but I feel that the latest service release has dealt with the bulk of the performance issues. Now I feel the next task is to work on the characters themselves ... just as the community gave the Poser 4 characters some TLC, the same could also apply to the Poser 5 characters. Texture packs for the clothes that already exist might be another option that can fuel the desire to use them. Of course, if Steve and Lyrra want to add a Poser 5 section to Poser World that wouldn't hurt either. ;-)

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 2:11 PM

There IS allready SOME P5-clothes on Poser World. But it wouldn't harm if there was something for Don too ;o)

Yeah, Don can be hunky too, with some work! OK, (Image #1) I want a pirate shirt (you know, one of those "Seinfeld" type poofy shirts LOL), and some tight leather pants, and Italian leather boots (Image #2) ... Bond, Don Bond ... classic black suit with clean sharp lines, and dark hair with piercing blue eyes (sigh) (Image #3) ... Chippendale (body morph pack required) Well, you get the idea! LOL

hauksdottir ( ) posted Wed, 28 April 2004 at 11:44 PM

A classic elegant black suit or tuxedo would be nice (romantic dancers and cruise ship scenes, etc.) and would fit Don well since he doesn't have basketballs for shoulders or traps up to his eardrums. He could wear tailored clothes and look smart in them. James Coburn in such movies as Waterhole #3 wore tailored gambler's jackets and hats and looked damned sharp in them. (sexist movies, but I liked the way he moved and smiled) The jacket worn by Brannaugh in the second Harry Potter movie was sharp, too. Cumberbunds and vests would allow lots of scope for texturing! Like Deecey, I would like a loose adventurer's shirt (the Deva catalog has riverboat, pirate, adventurer's shirts all slightly different in neck and yoke details, but all designed for comfort while moving or working. Sleeves billow. Does anybody remember "Riverdance" and the wonderful white shirts of the Irish stepdancers? I have a patttern for Celtic wear (shirt and kilt) where the sleeve tops are filled with tiny gathers to get that effect. A pirate digging treasure or sailor hauling in ropes doesn't want the seams to split when he bends over! For trousers, I like the cossack look of loose pants tucked into boots. Whether they are lace-up soft forest-walking boots or shiny black riding boots doesn't matter (both are good). For decorating, a coat such as the Russians or Turks used to wear would be great. Floor length. Impressive. Carolly

There is gaining momentum towards increased use of the P5 figures. Variety is the spice of life, and how many more V3 renders can we really stand to look at? People are taking a second look at the P5 people. Its a huge waste to have a series of figures with and entire set of clothing, props and poses that NOBODY uses. I think the race to make "the greateset render ever" has distracted a lot of people from one of the beauties of Poser, making something out of nothing. I admit, the Judy default texture looks gross. Her head is weird and unappealing. Yah buy V3 and apply a mat pose, shes a knockout and your pic gets 400 hits. But isn't that missing an opportunity to develop as an artist? What if you actually took a lame figure like Judy and made something out of her. I was and still am a huge fan of Posette. In many ways I prefer her over Vicky. Judy seems to be the latest incarnation of Posette and deserves some consideration. That is what inspired me to make a high resolution photorealistic texture especially for Judy. I know, Judy can use V1/V2 textures. But a lot of times they just don't look quite right on her, so I created this texture using only the Judy figure. And while it looks great IMHO on Judy, it doesn't look that good on Vicky, which confirms my suspicion that textures don't translate that well between them (the meshes are very different). The link I've included is a preview pic of the texture I created, featuring a face morph generated by the excellent Morphin' Mindy created by Deecey (TY Deecey!) Also, theres a brilliant artist named Fogge who uses the P5 figures quite well, take a look at his gallery; http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?ByArtist=Y&Artist=Fogge

Nice pic, Zarabanda. I think a lot of people forget that Judy can use V1/2's textures (as well as Don can use Mike's), something that gives them vastly improved looks! It's really only the dead eyes that is an issue, and there are many different flavors of replacement eyes to choose from. On the pic attached here I used the ones from PoserStyle (can't remember what they're called) (And Deecey's Morphin' Mindy of course) Judy has a more realistic body than Vickie's amazonian model look. Of course it's a matter of taste which you prefer but I know I prefer to be able to CHOOSE!

And something else that people always do is to compare V3 with judy which is comletely wrong since V3 is much higher resolution... However even compared with V2 she needs improvements something that Yamato with his new Judy has succesed to make...

It is encouraging to me to see the responses to this thread. Don't get me wrong - I love the Millenium figures and the versatility that they provide. They make some drop-dead gorgeous renders to be sure! I also have my sights set on Neftis' "Elle" figure which is coming out soon (hopefully! LOL). She's a real beauty. But like ernyoka I also like choices. And each time I played with Judy I found that she was able to depict people that were like "the rest of us" ... more natural, more down to earth, more girl next door. So that is why I decided to beef her up a little. Now I'm glad I did! Though funds are tight right now (heh, you have no idea!) I am going to renew my Poser World subscription today. That way if they decide to support some Poser 5 stuff I'm there. 8-)

Hi, I just wanted to offer some input on the pricing available in the UK. Following the separation from our parent company in Germany, we have been working hard with our in-country distributors and partners to correct the off balanced pricing. Our problem with resellers such as Amazon.UK is that unlike Amazon in the US, we do not have a direct relationship as Amazon.UK is managed by the UK distributor Computers Unlimited. We have revised pricing with CU since the start of the year which should make the street price of Poser 5 to end-users aprox 249 pounds. In fact if you go to our European web store, you should be able to see that this pricing change for a more worldwide structure is being offered and has been for some time. We will continue to work with our sales partners in country to strongly encourage the price adjustments. With kind regards, Katherine
