Subject: What do you want in a new character package?

I'm putting the finishing touches on my new texture for V3. Her name is LolaV3 she is a composite of two different Hispanic models Hi-Res photos. I've have taken great pain to maintain the quality of skin textures and don't feel that she needs a bump map. What do you think? She's also scaled down to 5 ft 1 inch in height and will include a INJ file for the V3 Cat Suit to fit her body. I only used standard morphs on her body to make clothes fitting from any V3 clothing item easier to do deal with and they are kept to a minimum. Also, what else do you want in a character package? Makeup kits, poses, expressions, clothing, or what? I get really tired of buying products that have all kinds of useless stuff in them and want to know what exactly you the buyer wants to see in a character package. Thanks for the feedback!

great!!, but no ofensse the eyes are kind of dead eyes, they are extremely unreal

I have a real problem with creating realistic-looking eyes myself. I include in every character pack HeidiM's Gen3 Eyes for V3 for free. There are 10 very nice V3 eye sets with in that set. The renders posted here were a set of default brown eyes, I didn't apply any preset eyes as I was more interested in getting feedback about what people want in a charcter package. So, I'll chalk up 1 vote for Realistic Eyes! Thanks for the comment and I hope you will continue to give some more feedback about what else you want us to provide with character packages. There are hundreds of preset pose packages for V3 out there that work most any character morphs with minor tweaking.
I'm more interested in providing makeup, tattoos, or clothing INJ morphs and am curious if anyone agrees with that path.

The skin textures and morphs are looking good. She doesn't have eyelashes yet. Actually, your eyes aren't too bad. I think the irises and pupils are fine. The eye whites are just a bit too white, especially for a darker-skinned character. Then with no lashes yet, it is more noticeable. The no lashes with the whiter sclera gives her a just-pinched-on-the-butt, surprised look. I just think you need to tweak the eyewhites color a bit. But you definitely have a decent start here. Tim

is it me, or dose this look like the ex footballer that sells crisps

AlleyKatArt ( ) posted Mon, 17 May 2004 at 5:40 PM

D-Larsen, she seems like a good character. Here's what attracts my attention when I buy a product: Variability and diversity. The more variable a character is, the more diverse he or she is, the more I'm interested. IE: Different skin tones that can be achieved in Poser. Make her be able to go from her nice sultry skin tone to an even darker one. Personally, I find her eyebrows to be 'off' but that could just be the lack of eyelashes.

Also, and this is just picking nits, now, but you might consider using blink in the positive just slightly, or dialing up the size of her irises. She looks slightly... surprised, to say the least. And in the second promo, the image on the left... Can we see something along those lines, with a different lighting? The lighting you used made her skin a bit... green.

Thanks for the feedback folks! I really am looking for more comments about what you would want to see in a character package rather than specific comments about this character. Obviously, she is a WIP, and I really don't want to package her with the same old crap that we all have already. We all have hundreds of poses for V3, we all have clothing, we all have our favorite eye sets, etc. I want to provide something different that is missing from the marketplace right now. Please, don't think I'm disregarding your comments, they will all be used in Lola's development. Thanks for the feedback! Dale

d-larsen ( ) posted Mon, 17 May 2004 at 6:18 PM

Thanks Khrys, you slipped one in on me while I was responding. Ya' gotta be quick around here!

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Mon, 17 May 2004 at 6:52 PM

Perhaps it wouldn't be a selling point, but in the case of eye textures, I like to have a version that does NOT have highlights painted on. If I'm not in a similar situation and lighting to the highlights, they look weird. I hate taking them off.
I like eyebrows to be done with the transmap, or at least a separate head texture without them, so I can change hair colors without looking like a dye job.
On darker skinned characters, in the product previews, I like to see the hands to see if the color variation is realistic. While you're at it anyway, if the seamlines are well matched, fan the fingers to show that. Nothing unnatural, but let me see the sides.
I'm not all that into tatoo variations. It takes up more file space than it's worth to me.
I'm not big on huge numbers of makeup variations, either. One natural and one nice realistic makeup head texture is good, and if there are more, put them up as a separate freebie download, or include them as a link.

The absolute most important thing to me in a character set: DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT! There's too much in the marketplace that looks similar. ('Oh, hey, it's another Caucasian Vicky; hoo hum. Worse, it's an "Asian" character who's paler than I am, and I'm a white pasty computer nerd. Ooh, Ecstasy's texture base; hi, Ecstasy's texture base!') It takes just as long to do "yet another" as it does to do something that fills a gap (Hispanic characters is a good gap to fill, BTW), so fill a gap instead of repeating the old theme.

d-larsen ( ) posted Mon, 17 May 2004 at 7:43 PM

Those are the kind of things I'm looking for! I want to fill gaps, but since I've only been around here for 4-5 months, I don't always know what gaps are there. That was one of the reasons I released my ALexieM3 character here for free. There were too many studly Michaels' out there so what's the point! I am trying to capture that same attitude with this new character for V3. A plain jane, everyday girl with scars, pear-shaped hips, small breasts, and Hispanic. Being of Spanish/Nordic descent(yes, quite a combination), I have a real problem with some of the characterizations that have been done. Most "Latino" characters I find out there are white Vicki's with brown skin. We are not brown! We have an olive shade to our complexions, some darker than others, some lighter. My mix gives me the whitest butt you'll ever see, but where the sun shines my mother's dark olive skin takes over. I want a real girl-next-door-look but I also want to be able to make her appealing to others. Fyrespirit, you are right on and make some excellant suggestions that I will incorporate into LolaV3. Thank you all again and keep them coming!

I apologize d-larsen for requesting that this be moved to the product forum, as I am not a mod I won't take on that job. I have deleted the post. Marque

In any case, this is more a question about what Poser users want out of packages than a specific product-related post. My answer is to forget the extras. Piling in a bunch of poses and light sets is so much padding. Any serious user is going to do their own posing and lighting anyway. Make-up kits are more useful, though I seldom bother using them. Generally, once you have one, you don't really need another. Tattoos - personally, I don't like them. As long as you keep them separate from the main texture. Again, if you have one pack of tattoos you can apply it to any number of characters. In fact, I generally use just one bump file for all characters. Since my renders are usually of full-length figures I defy anyone actually to notice that the bump file and the eyelash transparency are always the same.

I don't use makeup sets or tatoos. They make characters look too "contemporary," and I don't do many contemporary renders. What I most want is a fit pose that conforms clothing to the new character. I don't know how it's done, but some merchants do it. DarkWhisper's Teresa, for example, comes with a pose that fits any of V3's clothing to Teresa.

d-larsen ( ) posted Tue, 18 May 2004 at 2:00 PM

Marque, no apology needed. I was wrong to include pictures of a WIP in the original thread. Phantast, thanks good thought about the bump! I'm curious just how many people use their own bumps? randym77, starting with my next projects I will be including morphs for the V3 and M3 Cat Suits and am taking particular care to use mostly standard body morphs that can be applied to those clothing items. That should make fitting clothes an easy detail. I don't know about fitting any V3 clothing to a character. Conforming clothes will generally fit a character if you conform it it first to the character and then apply the body morphs. That is why you have to use only the same morphs on the body as are included in the clothing. If the clothing doesn't contain the same body parts and morphs, it will never conform properly. That's why I've started including the CatSuit Morph with all new characters, because it was suggested by to me by several people in the Poser Forum. Clothes are a nightmare to deal with when any morphs are applied but you are right we should take care to make it as easy as possible if we want your business. Thanks again to all for your comments, please keep them coming they are all considered and most will be used! Dale

randym77 ( ) posted Tue, 18 May 2004 at 4:38 PM

A lot of clothing doesn't come with many body morphs, though. I don't know how they do it, but some people manage to make fit poses that will conform all clothing to the character. DarkWhisper's "fit clothes to Teresa" pose will fit any V3 clothing to Teresa, even if doesn't have any morphs in it. I just tried it with Penny Dreadful's strappie, which doesn't have any of the morphs Teresa uses, and it conforms perfectly. (I'd show you, but I'm afraid I'd get arrested. ;-)

Randy, re child pornography: The US supreme court ruled there had to be an actual child involved for it to be child abuse, recently (within the last year). While I personally disagree with the subject matter, I feel they did the right thing because artists like Thorne were getting harassed like mad.

I really don't think it was necessary to move this thread ...

d-larsen ( ) posted Wed, 19 May 2004 at 9:03 AM

Thanks, Phantast but I should haven't included a WIP Project that was going to be for sale in the future. If it had been pictures of my Freebie ALexieM3 or no pictures at all it would have been left alone. I can understand why the move, even though I may not have intended to violate TOS, technically I did. Thanks for the vote of confidence though! I hope people will continue to give me feedback for this thread, it is important for merchants to listen to the buyers and try to find ways to apply their comments into future software releases! What I want in a new character package? Something no other character has! If it is the same old natural and tattooed, 20 eye colors, and pointed-ear morph... I'll pass. However, if it is ethnic with suitable hair and props, I'll take a closer look. If it is a distinctive body shape with clothing and fitting morphs, I'll take a closer look. Example: a classicial Grecian face and shorter body-type with acquiline nose and ringlet hair included, add a marble texture to the pack, and you have something interesting. Or do a properly corsetted body (let's say 17th century) with a fit morph for a couple of suitable gowns, and proper period makeup. Adding a powdered wig would be a tremendous bonus. If you add a prop such as a handmirror, crown, musical instrument, toy, whatever, you start to create a story, a unique personality, something interesting. Carolly

Yes, two more things.

  1. A little flavor text or background information. Don't include a novel, but a paragraph or two is nice, shows you've put some thought into it, and gets some creative juices going.

  2. RESEARCH! Oooh, dear. I know too much about Japan, the "Old West" era, and ancient Greece and Rome to really enjoy some of the recent store themes and releases. Every time I see a kimono that flares at the bottom or a tunica with sleeves, I fall over and die. (And every time I see a woman in a toga, I crack up laughing. Only one kind of woman wore a garment similar to a toga.... And it wasn't the upper class.) Give me something authentic, or at least point to your references and explain why you had to deviate from authentic for technical reasons, and I'll love you forever.
