Subject: i am being hassled for putting multiple images in my uploads

Primal ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 12:41 PM · edited Sat, 09 November 2024 at 6:00 AM

i resently got a letter telling me i couldnt put more than one image in my upload...like putting youre main image and then some other attempts bellow it ,,or multiple images that tell a story or works in progress...i have read the terms of service from top to bottom and think this rule is not in there..i dont like this rule as it seams that showing your art is what this place is for..does this mean i cant upload a comic with more than one image or try to show a sequence of events..i am not sure the administrater who sent me this letter has read the T.O.S...i give alot to this community and expect something in return, but this seams a little petty..and has left a bad taste in my mouth..as i have been acused of cheating...

Hi, Firstly, let me say that everyone who works here is very familiar with both the TOS and the gallery upload rules, and I know that the person who sent you the message is familiar with them. On the gallery upload page it does say that you're limited to one upload per day, and that if you wish to upload more then you need to purchase Gallery Plus. The intention is that 'upload' is synonymous with 'single image', 'finished render' or similar but perhaps we need to make that more explicit. The possible exception to this might be if, for example one were to be uploading a short comic strip panel. Gallery plus allows you to upload more than one image/render/scene per day, and it would be unfair to those who have purchased it if we allowed others to post three seemingly unrelated images joined together as one image. Kev.

Mark_uk ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 2:03 PM

so a religious Triptych painting would be not allowed?

dialyn ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 2:09 PM

It is possible to create the illusion of three panels in a single graphic. There is no reason, other than selfishness, for someone to create a string of unrelated, large graphics that are difficult to view if for no other reason than the time it takes to upload. I don't see any reason a religious paintings be exempted. What is religious to you is nothing but another graphic to me.

Primal ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 2:17 PM

i thought my images were related ,,like three recent gifts or two birthdays together or a tutorial or a couple of examples using the same filter...and i didnt think it would matter since you give a lot of space to put our images...i thought we should be able to use it..i would be more careful in keeping them related but please no more rules..and no accusations of cheating for something that wasnt clearly stated..it is a bit of an insult..

mateo_sancarlos ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 3:13 PM

Yeah, they could reword it so that "one upload" means "one jpeg file" or "one gif file", unless it already says that.

Primal ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 3:23 PM

I've looked into the discussions that led to the 1 upload per day limit, and it all had to do with the number of uploads and thumbnails, not with the number of frames within one file!

Khai ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 3:34 PM

actually.. it says no where at all what the upload can be other than the rules on content. nothing about panels, etc. just ' Please use the form below to upload your art or writing to the gallery. We have a limit of 1 free upload per day.' so does the new interpration include comics? orthagraphic plan views? images with inset closeup details? I'd like to know here! btw - the above is the gallery guidelines, NOT the TOS. checking the TOS turned up nothing at all.

Mark_uk ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 4:01 PM

"There is no reason, other than selfishness, for someone to create a string of unrelated, large graphics " Who decides that they are unrelated. I might produce a Triptych that has an image of a cat, a water melon and a washing machine. To me they are related to you they are not. Seems to me that the admins made a mistake here and should have the grace to admit it. The rules are one upload a day now if they wish to control the content of that upload even more they should state so clearly in the rules and not make arbitory decisions.

svdl ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 4:06 PM

I do not think combining multiple images into one file is cheating. You're still limited to the 500 Kb file size, and a single thumbnail and title, while someone who has purchased Gallery Plus can upload multiple images, EACH WITH ITS OWN THUMBNAIL, TITLE AND 500 Kb SIZE LIMIT! So what are we talking about? Gallery Plus still has major advantages for those who are able to create more than one high-quality image per day!

it looks like once again money is at the root of this..no one else i know of charges to upload images,,and as i have spent hundreds of dollars here over the last year and support my fellow artists fully at all times and have spent thousands of hours preparing my free stuff and always have tried to follow your rules.. i feel very insulted by this letter..and really think i deserve an appology,,as i see it as your mistake not making things clear to everyone or by changing or interpretting the rules to restrict us.you must remember that we are artists...

Copied and pasted here straight from the Poser Gallery page "Please Do Not post "product preview" images to this gallery.
Members remain the original copyright holder in all their materials here at Renderosity. Use of any of their material inconsistent with the terms and conditions set forth is prohibited and is considered an infringement of the copyrights of the respective holders unless specially stated otherwise." So if a collage of images is cheating, why then is there blatent advertising by merchants of their products in the gallery? I have to agree that the administration is wrong in this case. I also think they owe an appology. The rules state 1 free upload a day. Image size no more than 512 pixels blah blah blah blah. No where does it say you are limited to amount of frames/continuations etc. I think Renderosity is a wonderful place to display really artistic work. I also think it's fantastic there are free upload capibilities. It's to bad there has to be smallness, pettyness, and hurtful things going on.

Argon18 ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 4:47 PM

Sounds like a personal grudge to me since I've seen loads of multipanel pics uploaded and yours is the 1st one that has had a problem. 1 file is 1 upload and it's 1 pic no matter how many frames it has in it. That conforms to what the free upload is within the pixel and the file size limits. If they want to squeeze more money out of ppl let them offer something of more value rather than try to drive ppl away with that kind of harrassment

They could also provide bonus uploads, like if you buy $50 of stuff, you get extra image upload privileges. The more you spend, the more image uploads you're allowed. Then the server maintenance and throughput costs would be covered by marketplace revenues. It might even lead to an increase in sales.

Elfenone ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 5:03 PM

Gee.. Bill I can't believe somebody doesn't understand that your composits are your style not a way to get a bunch of images in one upload.. Haven't they ever heard of Andy Warhol?? You know.. I get so frustrated... and almost afraid to post my images..not knowing how each individual interprets the TOS. I don't blame you for being upset. You stay within the size limit of a single image in a composit and they come out beautiful and clear. A real treasure to view. I've never even begun to think of anyone as artistic as you.. (not to mention a kind hearted person) to be a cheat. I'm also very insulted that anyone would level such an accusation at you.

Mark_uk ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 5:03 PM

or why not only allow uploads if you a customer at the market place? what is all this free stuff anyway when profits can be made?

Argon18 ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 5:14 PM

Where do you think the customers for the market place come from? Get rid of the free stuff and half the profits disappear and so do more than half the users here, they'll just go somewhere else. Happens everytime you focus on profits instead of providing a service.

Look, before this gets even more negative I've asked for admin guidance on the issue. The original IM and my response to the opening post of this thread were made in good faith based on what we thought was the right and proper thing to do. If admin tell us we were wrong, I'll be more than happy to apologise. Kev.

Primal ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 5:23 PM

i think that a bit cold as you clearly have not stated the terms of this so how could you accuse some one of breaking rules that are not there.??

B_PEACOCK ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 5:24 PM

I have to agree with Bill and Steven SVDL . There is one size limit and if you do not exceed that then what is the problem ?? Also how is that cheating ones who pay for it .They could do the same thing also . It doesnt take up more space you just lose some quality to your image I dont see were there is a big problem and it seems to be abit nit picking if you ask me .Not hurting any one from where I sit .I see alot of Bill's work and his images are related . Just my thoughts on the subject

chrislenn ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 5:37 PM

My upload yesterday was a 2 framed image simulating a photo shoot - different models background and props in each but I guess related. the largest image was 950x950 and I kept them to under 200kb. I received no im telling me I was in the wrong (probably will now though lol). The only harm I did was some people missed the top image and only noticed the bottom so harm done only to me. Bill harms no one either by doing this and I agree his images are related in style if not in content. I certainly don't see it as cheating anyone. I admire and respect Bill and his art and as I see it we get twice the pleasure with each upload this is just my opinion and I am not a regular commentator here but felt this was worth commenting on Chris :o)

The key here is the 512kb limit...some people including myself upload a "single" image that meets that limit each time we upload.I see nothing wrong with uploading more than one image and no violation of the "spirit" of the TOS as the TOS on this matter reflects the file size not the content. In absolutely no way do I see any harm being done by comics or multi image uploads...the only harm that can be seen is that rosity is trying to force people to pay for the two additional uploads each day!!If Primal and others can squeeze two or even three images into an upload and none of them violate the TOS in regards to content...than I have to agree that rosity is dead wrong here!!Three images in one upload costs rosity no more than a single image upload that meets the 512kb size requirement.

I understand the need to make money and doubt that anyone begrudges rosity that...but you allow us to upload images based on filesize and image size parameters-as long as Primal meets these requirements and doesn't violate the TOS in regards to content,I think you should back away and let this one slide. It does no harm to anyone and considering what Primal says in regards to what he contributes to this site...I think he is correct and this truly gives rosity a black eye. This is a loop hole that you can't fix in regards to making people pay for additional uploads...so you try to ban it instead with the only reason being that you want people to buy the additional uploads.

Word to the wise,I purchased the additional uploads last month because I've been beta testing for some friends...was gonna buy it again this month for the same reason but may not if this is the way you choose to do business.I have my own site so I can do one image and post links to the others on my site...I can also invite others to my site to do the same thing or to create a free site of their own to do the same thing.I have agreed with rosity in the past and here I fully understand the need to make a little profit...but I have also disagreed with rosity in the past and here I see a blatant attempt by you to force someone to buy the additional uploads or even to create a new rule for this sole purpose.

So on this I stand against rosity...there are better ways to make money and this isn't the way to do it because no matter how you handle it-you come off greedy and manipulative!

I usually avoid the forum, but this is just amazing to me. First of all, to call Bill-one of the most generous and giving members of the community a "cheater" is beyond the pale. To suggest that someone who has NEVER charged for anything he freely gives to this community is trying to swindle 5 lousy bucks a month is nothing short of shocking. As I understand the spirit of the "one upload per day" rule is to limit server space, not artistic creativity. One upload per day, to me, means just that-one upload per day. How much more clear could a rule be? There are not qualifications, or specifics, or small print-one upload per day. Aside from all of this, to label someone a "cheater" for violating an unstated policy is quite rude. It suggests malicious intent on Bill's part, and that is an insult to one of the kindest people I've met here.

SeanE ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 7:44 PM

to say that the one upload per day is an "intention" of one picture per upload is not a statement of fact and can't be penalised unless it specifically says this in the TOS. As far as I can see in the TOS there is nothing to prevent a person from placing more than one picture within a graphic upload as long as it makes a single picture as a whole and doesn't exceed the 512k limit. I for one did this recently with a Killeroo cover/ variations and didn't have a single complaint or hassle with it. Mind you coz it was a crap picture I didn't get many views either so I've now deleted it myself - but I wasn't forced to do so. time to change the TOS I guess - again..... with the usual flurry of "I'm leaving this place and never coming backs!" that will accompany this I'm sure...

svdl ( ) posted Sun, 23 May 2004 at 8:08 PM

I'd strongly advise against changing the TOS in this respect. Referring to post #9 by Mark_uk: who's to say whether the panels are related? The TOS are already too subjective to my taste, e.g. a few weeks back I wanted to post an image containing a funeral pyre for a deceased warrior, but that was viewed as torture by a moderator! Let's not make it worse than it already is.
P.S.: I fully agree with the spirit of the TOS. Keeping hardcore pornography and extreme S&M out of the galleries is important!

I do not see what Bill {primaltruck} is doing that is not allowed. His images are always within the TOS Guidelines The full image should be between 100 x 100 and 4000 x 4000 pixels and be less than 512 KB in size I rather like his style and find him to be a fantastic artist. Warm Regards, Nancy

Dear primaltruck, My sincere apologies for the IM that was sent to you and the resulting situation. It was a result of a misunderstanding of what constitutes an image, and what the intent of the upload limit was. Please feel free to upload images that contain multiple pictures. As long as that image is within the file size limits, we do not mind if you have several frames, related or not, within the single upload. I trust this will clarify things and get us back on track. Best regards, LillianH Renderosity Marketing & Promotions

Happily this issue was resolved in an adult, mature way b4 I had to add my philosophy regarding the thread. It is refreshing to see the majority of RO users basically agreeing on the issue, and to see the admin accepting this group effort and issuing an apology. This is a very rare thing to see...and once again is a resolvement to a problem that should never have exsisted in the first place. "Keep on truckin', Primal!"
